WW2 German 1939 Iron Cross 1st Class Attributed to Leutnant Karl Heinz Dannhaner of Kampfgeschwader 55, fine example of an un-marked 1st class Iron Cross with the original pin and catch fixing to the reverse. Much of the original patina remains to the award. Complete with the original black leatherette case of issue with outline of the award to the lid. Housed inside the case is a piece of medal ribbon for the War Service Cross 2nd class. Also accompanying the medal is an original studio portrait photograph of Leutnant Dannhaner in Luftwaffe uniform wearing his awards. Also with the group is a letter written to an English collector from Dannhaner, inviting him to a reunion of the squadron in Germany.
Third Reich Mothers Cross Medal in Gold with Original Case of Issue, fine standard example of a gold grade mothers cross award with un-damaged enamel and neck ribbon. Housed in its original blue leatherette case of issue with Franz Scheurle makers details to the interior of the lid. Some wear to the exterior of the case but generally a good example.
A Collection of Great War Single Medals, 1914 Star medal with copy clasp – “T-23532 DVR. W.T. FARMER A.S.C.” William Turley Farmer served in France from 12th August 1914 with 1st Divisional Signal Company; 1914-15 Star medal – “16789 SJT. A.A. PEARSON R.G.A.” Alfred Arthur Pearson from Limehouse London enlisted on 13th October 1896. Discharged unfit for further service on 23rd June 1916 he died shortly afterwards on 5th July 1916; Victory medal – “73617 PTE. T.J. WINSOR NOTTS & DERBY R.”20 year old Thomas Jordan Winsor, from Walton-on-the-hill, Surrey, served with 15th Battalion Notts & Derby Regiment and was killed during the German Spring Offensive in 1918 with his date of death being accepted as 25th March 1918. He now rests in Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Entitled to a pair only; Victory medal - “2864 PTE. J.R. LAMB SURR. YEO.” James Robert Lamb was enlisted on 27th August 1915 and was discharged unfit for further service from the Royal West Surrey Regiment on 5th August 1917. Entitled to a pair of medals and Silver War Badge for his war service; Victory medal – “23887 PTE. R.J. MARTIN R.E. KENT R.” Robert Joseph Martin from Rose Street, Tonbridge, Kent, enlisted on 1st December 1914 but did not serve overseas until November 1916, and served overseas for 9 months until ill health forced his return. Later transferred to the Labour Corps (No. 459384) and was discharged due to ill health in February 1919 and was awarded a Silver War Badge.

R.” George John Bush enlisted in to 1/4th Battalion Hampshire Regiment on 3rd September 1914. He landed in Basra with the Battalion on 18th March 1915 and was discharged unfit for further service due to illness on 21st December 1916. He is also entitled to a Silver War Badge. WW2 1941 Royal Air Force Bomber Command Casualty Trio to a Sergeant in 78 Squadron, 1939-45 Star medal, Air Crew Europe Star medal, War medal 1939-45, all 3 unnamed as issued, with named Air Council condolence medal issue slip, “SERGEANT W.D. EDGE”, also accompanied by ticker tape slips confirming name and number “1152264 SGT EDGE” and the issue of the 3 medals. 19 year old Walter Donald Edge from Shrewsbury, Shropshire was killed on 25th August 1941 whilst flying in a 78 Squadron Whitley V bomber on a raid to Dusseldorf. 44 aircraft took part in the raid, of which 3 failed to return. Sergeant Edge’s aircraft took off at 20.09 on 24th August and nothing more was heard from it, it was later reported as having been shot down by a night fighter 3 miles north of Wavre. Walter Donald Edge now rests in a joint grave in Wavre Communal Cemetery, Belgium.

P. DICKENS”. Group mounted as worn on pin back bar and contained in small glazed wooden frame (back not fixed in place). Distinguished Service Cross, London Gazette 13th September 1918, HONOURS FOR THE MERCANTILE MARINE. The KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of decorations and medals to the undermentioned Officers and Men of the Mercantile Marine in recognition of zeal and devotion to duty shown in carrying on the trade of the country during the war :— To receive the Distinguished Service Cross: Capt. Charles Philip Dickens. Born in Pill, near Bristol in 1873, Charles Philip Dickens gained his 2nd Mate Certificate in September 1893, his 1st Mates certificate in February 1895 and his Master’s Certificate on 11th September 1896. In 1901 he is recorded as a Boatman living in the family home in Easton-in-Gordano, Somerset. By 1911 he is the Master of the 289 tonne barge “Runswick” in Thornaby, Yorkshire.He is confirmed on the roll for the Silver Lloyds M.S.M., one of 435 recipients of the medal, his Great War campaign medals were not issued until 9th November 1938 and by 1939 he is back in Easton-in-Gordano with his profession shown as that of a Retired Master Mariner.Charles Philip Dickens died on 2nd July 1946 and is buried in St. Georges Church, Easton-in-Gordano.
WW2 German 1939 Iron Cross 2nd Class by Deschler & Sohn with Original Paper Packet of Issue, mint un-issued example of a 1939 Iron Cross 2nd class with much of the frosted finish remaining to the frame and all the finish to the central core. Ring is stamped with number ‘1’ for the maker Deschler & Sohn, Munchen. The award is still in the tissue paper covering with separate piece of medal ribbon. The award is complete with the blue paper packet with makers details to the reverse and printed to the centre ‘Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse 1939’.
Victorian 2nd Afghanistan War Campaign Medal to the 67TH (South Hampshire) Regiment of Foot, medal with two clasps ‘Charasia’ and ‘Kabul’, engraved naming, “40B/608 LCE CORPL. J. JAGGERS, 67TH FOOT”. 18 year old Joseph Jaggers, originally from St Martins, Leicester enlisted on the 14th April 1864. He served for a total of 20 years 146 days, 19 of which were spent in India, he married Sarah Irwin in Rangoon on 15th July 1872, she is shown as being with the regiment but sadly a later alteration to his service record shows that she had died. Corporal Jaggers was arrested and tried by Regimental Court Martial on 11 May 1883 the charge being ‘Leaving his Guard without orders’ on being found guilty he was reduced to Private. He was discharged as unfit for further duty due to chronic dysentery on 9th September 1884. Medal and both clasps are confirmed on the roll and on his service record. Late Rod Flood collection

WW2 German Luftwaffe Soldbuch, issued in 1941 to A Schuller with uniform photograph to the inside cover. Lots of entries throughout the book. Served mostly in Luftwaffe airfield and ground units including Luftwaffen-Bau-Battalion 33 XI, it was with this unit where he served on the Eastern Front which resulted in the award of the Eastern Front medal which is noted in the awards page of the book. Some water staining but generally a good example.
WW2 German Artillery NCO’s Soldbuch who Was Wounded During the Normandy Campaign When His Unit Artillery Regiment Nr 271 was Destroyed in the Falaise Gap, good used book issued to Unteroffizier Franz Dang. Uniform photograph to the inside cover. Various Artillery regiments noted including II.AR.271 (2nd Battery Artillery Regiment Nr271), later serving with a replacement unit, ‘Le Art.Ers. u. Ausb. Abt 10’. A number of hospital visits and wounds are noted in the book, according many during the fighting in Normandy in August 1944. He is noted as being awarded the Eastern Front medal, War Service Cross 2nd class and Romanian Crusade Against Communism award issued in January 1945. Accompanied by two photographs of Dang with his sweetheart when just an enlisted rank.

With slip for issue of scroll, card boxes of issue for medals (not present), condolence slip for the issue oof the 1914-15 Star, and medal ribbons for a pair and trio; Memorial Scroll, “ANDREW MCNAB ROYAL SCOTS”, scroll in postal tube of issue addressed to ‘Mrs E McNab, 7 Henry Street, Edinburgh’, end cap of tube is missing, also contains issue slip.Originally from Arbroath, S-8669 Corporal James McLennan was serving with the 8th Battalion when he was killed in action on 14th July 1916 during the attack on Longueval village. Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.1676 Private Andrew McNab attested for service with the Royal Scots in June 1913 and was serving with the 1/5th Battalion at Gallipoli when he was killed in action on 2nd May 1915 aged 18. KENT R.” Charles William Hunt enlisted into the 1st Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment on 12th December 1915. He was discharged unfit due to wounds on 1st May 1917 and issued with a Silver War Badge (181725, not with lot). Entitled to the pair only.

Scarce WW2 German Luftwaffe Wehrpass for Motorised Flak Battery Awarded both Army and Luftwaffe Flak Badges, the book issued to Friedrich Bierlein from Bergertshofen. It would appear he served in various flak regiments including 1st Battery Flak Regiment 12 (Motorised). He served in Belgium and then in Italy. Apart from the two flak badges, he was also awarded the 1st and 2nd class Iron Cross, 1st October medal and black wound badge. Civilian photograph to the inside. Great War 1914-15 Star Medal Trio Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, Recipient Was Badly Wounded by Shrapnel in August 1918, 1914-15 Star medal, ‘6914 PTE. G. JUDD THE QUEEN’S R.’, British War and Victory medals ‘6914 CPL. G. JUDD THE QUEEN’S R.’ George Judd, a 17 year old Baker from Caterham in Surrey, attested for service in the Queens Regiment on 27th August 1914. Serving with the 8th Battalion he arrived in France on 29th December 1915. On 22nd August 1918 he was severely wounded by shrapnel to the left thigh and right buttock which resulted in his femur being fractured. The injury resulted in his left leg being 1 ¾ inches shorter than his right leg, he was discharged as no longer fit for service on 15th November 1919 and was issued with a Silver War Badge giving his discharge address as Geneva Terrace, Brixton, London. Also served as S/7153 in the Middlesex Regiment

A Very Unusual Second World War Civilian British Empire Medal to a Member of the Women’s Land Army, British Empire medal (Civil) GVIR, 1st issue, engraved naming “MISS THELMA ALICE ASHWORTH BIRTWISTLE” mounted on original bow ribbon. With an original copy of ‘The Land Girl’ magazine dated February 1944 which mentions the recipient.London Gazette 4th January 1944 - The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) to the undermentioned: Miss Thelma Birtwistle, Member of the Women's Land Army, Inglesham, Wiltshire.Born on 23rd August 1921 in Blackburn, Lancashire, in 1939 she is a Lady Groom residing at the Lancashire County Institute of Agriculture at Hutton near Preston. She enrolled in the Women’s Land Army (No. 9825) being based on a farm in Wiltshire from October 1939 being a second herdsman to a pedigree herd.She married Aubrey Charles Woolford on 14th August 1963 in Inglesham, Wiltshire. Thelma Woolford died in September 2001 in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
WW2 German Soldbuch and Award Citation of Unteroffizier Gerhard Vesterling Heavy Railway Wire Company 148, with uniform photograph to the inside front cover. Well filled out with many entries. Some loose pages. Pages from Wehrpass also with the book, including areas served which shows he was at Kursk. Only award that appears to be noted in the book is a Eastern Front medal, however accompanying the book is a card citation for the War Service Cross 2nd class with swords. Also with some other documents and an official citation for the Mothers Cross awarded to Gertrud Vesterling issued on 21 Mai 1944.
Second World War Birmingham Blitz Home Guard George Medal Awarded for Gallantry in Rescuing People Trapped Beneath the Wreckage of an A.R.P. Depot at Tysely, Birmingham, George medal, GVI, 2nd type, engraved in upright capitals “PLTN. CDR.THOMAS M. SIMPSON, HOME GUARD”, medal in red titled fitted case of issue. With some research.London Gazette 27th May 1941 - The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the George Medal, for conspicuous gallantry in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner, to the undermentioned: — Platoon Commander Thomas Simpson, Home Guard. The recommendation for this award states “On the night of 11th December 1940 Platoon Commander Simpson actively assisted in rescuing several persons who were trapped beneath debris when an A.R.P. depot was hit. He had to crawl through debris with men supporting props and there was great danger of other parts of the building collapsing on him. He managed to saw through steel pipes and removed debris which was lying across trapped persons. He showed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.”Thomas Simpson was serving with the 6th Birmingham (Factories) Battalion (later 26th Warwickshire (Birmingham) Battalion ) Home Guard at the time of his award. The raid on Birmingham on the 11th December 1940 was the longest raid experienced by the city with some 200 enemy bombers pounding the city for 13 hours killing 263 people and badly injuring a further 243 others.The investiture took place at Buckingham Palace on 10th March 1942. A total of 13 George medals were awarded to member of the Home Guard for gallantry during the Second World War, 10 of these were for air raids.Included with the accompanying research is an email from the Central Chancery of Orders and Knighthood confirming that a replacement medal was issued in 1962 as the original medal was lost during a house move whilst the recipient was in hospital. The fact that this is a second type GVI medal would suggest that this is the replacement medal.
Rare Great War Hartlepool Special Constabulary Double Long Service Medal Group of Three, consisting of Borough of Hartlepool Special Constabulary medal for service in the Great War, engraved naming, “JOHN TREES”, Special Constabulary Long Service medal, GV, 1st type with clasp ‘Long Service 1929’, impressed “JOHN TREES”, Volunteer Force Long Service medal, EVII, impressed naming “985 SJT. J TREES 4TH DURHAM R.G.A.V.” Group mounted as worn. First medal is rare with only 116 being issued to members of the Hartlepool Special Constabulary for their services during the Great War. Volunteer Long Service meal in confirmed in Army Order of July 1904. A rare combination of awards.

Medals mounted for wear. The sons medals all unnamed as issued, 1939-45 star, Atlantic star with France & Germany clasp, Africa star with North Africa 1942-43, Burma star, Italy star, 1939-45 War medal and Elizabeth II Coronation medal. The medals are court mounted for wear. Accompanied by matching miniature dress medals and tunic ribbon bar. Housed in a card box with the name of Lieutenant Humphries and ‘VANGUARD’; Royal Naval officers sword being a universal pattern with the rear locket engraved ‘R. HUMPHRIES R.N’. Housed in the original scabbard. The sword blade is well worn with much of the etching absent. Original bullion sword knot attached to the guard. Framed and glazed commission document of Rosslyn Humphries, Brigade Orders for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines at the Coronation 1953, pair of officers shoulder boards etc. This grouping has come direct from the family and not offered for sale before.

British Medals and Paperwork Archive of Naval Officer Edward White Williams Royal Naval Reserve and Merchant Navy with Presentation Cigarette Case from the Chamber of Commerce of the Island of Guiana and Photograph Album with Image of Arctic Explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, medals consist of British War and Victory medals ‘LIEUT E W WILLIAMS R.N.R’ and George V bronze Mercantile Marine medal ‘EDWARD W WILLIAMS’. The archive and medals are housed in his original sailors suitcase where they have remained undisturbed for nearly 100 years. The grouping of documents includes various certificates relating to his service, a number of letters of recommendation giving references from various merchant ships which he had served on from the pre WW1 era and into the post WW2 period. He was serving in 1919 on board the S.S Arakaka as a 2nd officer when they were decorated for their service in the defence of the Caribbean island of Guiana. Williams was presented with a hallmarked silver cigarette case which has a gold Island of Guiana coin mounted to the lid. The case is hallmarked silver (Birmingham 1917) and is engraved to the interior ‘PRESENTED BY THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & COLONISTE TO E. W. WILLIAMS FOR DEVOTED SERVICE 1914 TO 1918’. Newspaper cuttings accompany the case which detail the award of this cigarette case, also the official 1919 dated citation scroll.Two photograph albums accompany the grouping which visually document his naval career from the WW1 period and into the post war years. Within one of the albums is an original photograph of the famous Arctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, who was giving a speech at the town hall, Port Stanley, a ticket for this lecture is loose with the album. The two albums are extremely comprehensive and are well annotated. Many very good images from his time in South America, with images in Peru, many good images from a part of the world which was rarely visited at the time. The albums move into North America and especially Canada, with good images of the Canadian wilderness etc. Overall this is a superb grouping which needs to be viewed to really appreciate the in depth historical note of this grouping.
An Interesting WW2 and Later Double Long Service Medal Group of Three to an Observer in the Royal Observer Corps, Who Served in Kent During the Battle of Britain, Defence medal, unnamed as issued, Special Constabulary Long Service medal, GVI, “BERTRAM C. ELVERY”, Royal Observer Corps medal, EIIR, “OBSERVER B.C. ELVERY”. Group court mounted for display. Bertram Elvery was born on 16th January 1905 in Gillingham, Kent. In 1939 he is still in Gillingham with the occupation of Storekeeper and also as a member of the Kent Special Constabulary. His Observer Corps medal was issued in 1959 and he died in June 1978. He was part of the Royal Observer Corps 1 group, who’s HQ was in Maidstone, which was one of the most active centres during the Battle of Britain.
Framed Great War 1914-15 Star Medal Trio of the New Zealand Forces, 1914-15 Star medal (not checked), British War and Victory medals, “12/965 S/SJT C.B. MELVILLE N.Z.E.F.” Group mounted in frame with 2 brass shoulder titles and a New Zealand Regiment cap badge, group not removed for checking. Cecil Balfour Melville from Auckland, New Zealand served overseas between 16th October 1914 and 4th August 1919. He married on 19th June 1918, his wife living in Brixton, London. He was discharged to the UK. His service record indicates that he was brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for War for valuable service, 31st August 1919.
An Unusual Queens South Africa Medal Issued to an Orderly in the Southampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Queens South Africa medal with 2 clasps, Cape Colony and Orange Free State, impressed naming “ORD. C. H. SWANNELL R.A.M.C.”. Medal and both clasps are confirmed on the medal roll for the Southampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps, there are only 21 names on this medal roll. Late Rod Flood collection

Queens South Africa Medal 4th Battalion the Durham Light Infantry, with two clasps, Cape Colony and South Africa 1902. Medal with impressed naming, “4410 SERJT: J. RICHARDSON DURHAM L.I.” Broach marks to the obverse of the medal, suspender and clasps have been reaffixed at a later date. Medal and both clasps confirmed on the 4th Durham Light Infantry roll.
WW2 USAAF Medal and Document Grouping of Lieutenant Clinton E Wallace who flew on Bomber ‘Old Doc’s Yacht’ 458th Bomber Group 8th Air Force, medals consists of Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C), Air Medal, 1941-45 European campaign medal, Defense medal, WW2 Victory medal and American armed forces campaign medal. Medals are all housed in a Spink & Son card box. The original documents are in relation to his enlistment, appointment as officer and awards of the Air Medal and clusters with citation recommendations. Clinton E Wallace was from Brutus, Michigan. He enlisted in the USAAF and did various training from 1942. His record of service lists the Air Medal with award clusters but does not list the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Group of 4 Attributed WW2 Medals, awarded to 7394467 Private Robert Edwin Smith, Royal Army Medical Corps, consisting of 1939-45 Star medal, Africa Star medal with clasp ‘North Africa 1942-43’, Italy Star medal and War medal 1939-45. Unnamed as issued, recent issues in plastic cases of issue accompanied by enclosure document for 4+1 medals; General Service medal 1918-62, EIIR, with clasp ‘Canal Zone’, “22203443 DVR T A COOMBS R. SIGNALS.”, laser engraved naming, medal in named cardboard box of issue.Complete with copy pages from his service record confirming that Terence Adrian Coombs enlisted in Bristol and served between 5th April 1948 and 6th June 1953. He served as a Driver and Despatch Rider with Middle Eastern Land Forces between 19th November 1948 and 2nd March 1952.
Indian Army Bombay Pioneers Pagri Badge, fine example with pin and catch fixing to the reverse. Accompanied by a brass cap badge for the Sinde Irregular Horse and an unusual badge made from a Kabul to Kandahar star medal with the centre removed and III added, two lug loop fittings placed on the reverse. WW2 USAAF Insignia and Paperwork Archive of Corporal Walter Mroz, grouping includes a sterling silver Aircrew wing with clutch back pin fittings to the reverse, 2nd Airforce cloth tunic patch, identity discs, headdress badge, collar badges and medal ribbons. Also accompanied by a whole archive of paperwork, books, photographs etc.
Great War Royal Fusiliers 1914-15 Star Medal Trio to a Gallipoli First Day Lander, 1914-15 Star medal, ‘10365 PTE. G. CARTWRIGHT R. FUS.’, British War and Victory medals, ‘GS-10365 PTE. G. CARTWRIGHT R. FUS.’ 31 year old George Cartwright from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, enlisted into the Royal Fusiliers on 3rd December 1914. Serving in the 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers he arrived at Gallipoli on 15th April 1915, the first day of the landings. His service record indicates he was wounded in action 7th May 1915 but gives no other details. He later served in France but was transferred to Class P Army Reserve on 25th June 1917 and issued with a Silver War Badge (not present), he was discharged as unfit for further service due to Arterio Sclerosis. In 1920 he re-attested for the Territorial Force serving in the 5th Leicestershire Defence Force through until March 1924.
WW2 and Later Casualty Medal Group of Four to the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, 1939-45 Star medal, Italy Star medal, War medal 1939-45, General Service medal 1918-62, GVI 1st type, “5577312 PTE. S.E. LEWIS A & S.H.”, first 3 unnamed as issued. Accompanied by card box of issue for Second World War medals, addressed to ‘MR S. E. LEWIS, 96 GIGANT STREET, SALISBURY WILTS’ and cardboard box of issue for the G.S.M. Confirmed as wounded on 4th July 1944 whilst serving with the 6th Battalion Black Watch in Italy (Casualty List 1514).
WW2 German Award Citation Group of Four, Infantry Regiment 257, all awarded to Josef Altmann, includes the citation for the award of the Infantry Assault badge in silver, Iron Cross 2nd class, Wound Badge in black and 4 year long service medal. All remain in good overall condition. All being for Infantry Regiment Nr 257, except for the 4 year long service medal which he was serving in 5./ Infantry Regiment Nr 39. All generally good condition.
WW2 USAAF Distinguished Flying Cross Medal and Document Grouping of 1st Lieutenant Leon C Druckenmiller B-17 Bomber Pilot of 554th Bombardment Squadron, 384th Bombardment Group, fine grouping consisting of Distinguished Flying Cross housed in the original case of issue, American Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters to the ribbon, also housed in the original case of issue. Both medals un-named as issued. Complete with set of Pilots wings with pin back fittings to the reverse. Pair of sterling silver rank bars. Also accompanied by a selection of original documents relating to the service of 1st Lieutenant Druckenmiller including the recommendation for his Distinguished Flying Cross with citation ‘For extraordinary achievement while serving as a pilot of a B-17 airplane on a number of combat bombardment missions over Germany and German occupied countries’. Another document on 1st May 1944 details a special commendation for the bomb group who attacked a target in Germany, ‘With its escort of P-51’s outnumbered and drawn off in combat, this formation was left, for more than an hour, without fighter protection. Before and during this period, in addition to intense fire from ground defenses, the crews of the 41st B Combat Wing were exposed to repeated savage assaults from more than fifty ME 109’s and FW 190’s, at one time remaining under unremitting attack for approximately forty minutes’. Grouping remains in very good overall condition. 1st Lieutenant Leon C Druckenmiller was from Reading, Pennsylvania. He entered active duty in 1943, serving in the European theatre of operations from March 1944. After the war he appeared to serve in the reserves.
WW2 German Army & RAD Labour Service Wehrpass and Document Grouping, all issued to Eckardt Rasch, consisting of armed forces issue Wehrpass with RAD uniform photograph to the inside. He began his military service with Infantry regiment 103 and then served in various other units until he served from 1943 in a transport training battalion. He was awarded the War Service Cross 2nd class with swords, RAD long service medal and the Eastern Front medal. Interesting it is noted that he was trained with hand grenades as well as various guns. Denazified cover to the wehrpass. Accompanied by various documents relating to his service with the RAD including his well used RAD Dienstausweis book, linen RAD personal ausweis with uniform photograph to the inside and his RAD Arbeitsdienst pass with uniform photograph. 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class and Militarpas of Grenadier Jakob Frion 12th Kompanie Wurttemberg Grenadier Regiment Nr119, the medal is a fine court mounted example with original pin back fitting to the reverse of the award. The militarpas is well filled out with details, page 3 shows the award of the medal on 25th September 1917. (2 items)
