Plate 2. Note: “The Morning Post”, Monday April 2nd 1849 states “Died, at his residence in Talbot Street, Dublin, on Monday, the 26th instant, in the 65th year of his age, Henry Quill Esq, late of the 32nd Regiment, with which corps he served in the Peninsula campaign. It was but a few weeks previous to his decease that he was presented with the well merited decoration and clasps (sic) for his services. He entered the army in 1809, and was present at the reduction of Flushing in that year. He received two severe wounds at the Siege of Burgos - one of which carried away his left eye, and considerably impaired the sight of the right; the other so shattered his leg that it narrowly escaped amputation. He was present at the Battle of Salamanca, and served in Picton’s division, which was so distinguished at Waterloo, where he received two gunshot wounds in the chest - one of the balls fractured the collar bone, penetrating the lung and carried with it some of his clothing, which was thrown up with the expectoration, but the ball became embedded in the substance, and a recovery, perhaps without a parallel in the annals of surgery ensued. The wound however, with its long train of sufferings, by weakening the constitution and inducing hoemoptysis, ultimately proved fatal. He was esteemed both in the army and in Private life for his high sense of honour and undeviating integrity. A beloved widow and four children are left to deplore his irretrievable loss.” National Archive records shows “Age at first appointment 25 Years, March 1809 Ensign 32 Foot by recommendation of General Obilbie Colonel of the 32nd Foot. £70 pension awarded in respect of “In the trenches before Burgos in Spain, loss of 1 eye” and £70 “at Quatre Bras in Flanders June 1815 a severe wound of the lungs”.
