At 15 he joined the AFS and then the Pioneer Corps from 1944-47, signing on immediately for another 5 years, being discharged in 1952 as Sergeant

AN INTERESTING LOT TO MAJOR CURRAN, ROYAL ULSTER RIFLES AND NO.2 COMMANDO includes officers green felt Forage Cap (2 black plastic buttons to Royal Ulster Rifles) white metal cap badge, officers cap and tunic made by Alderton & Sons Ltd Fleet St. London, named and dated 21.1.43. Medal ribbons include France & Germany Star, Territorial Medal etc (5) Cap badge and collar badges missing. A set of miniature medals, original cloth badges for Airborne Division, Special Forces Wartime Operations and 3rd Infantry Division, original photographs, ephemera etc. Major D P R Curran born 1920 joined the Territorials "London Irish" on 8/4/39 no.4014386, commissioned to the Royal Ulster Rifles Oct. 1940 no.153416, serving with the 70th Bn until Nov.1942. Believed joined No.2 Commando. Went overseas on 10/6/44 and wounded by blast twice returning to UK in July. Returned to Europe Aug. 44 with the RUR and was severely wounded (shot in the neck) on 13/10/44 being returned to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for several weeks . After the war he continued with the Territorials, resigning his commission 25/3/55 from the Royal Irish Fusiliers (TA). Provenance: From records and the vendor. Measures 19" x 12" and has several face chips along with a damaged bottom right corner. Additionally, enamel Advertising Signs, qty 4 comprising 'No Smoking', red lettering on white measuring 16" x 10" in excellent condition; 'W.E. Smith Prize Medal Mineral water Sold Here', white lettering on red ground measuring 18" x 12½", some areas of face chipping; 'Don't Get Wet - Macintoshes, Raincoats, Oilskins, Umbrellas Stocked In All Prices', maroon with light blue shadow lettering on white ground, measuring 18" x 30½", some face chipping and loss; 'The Celebrated Anhydrous Waterproof K Boot' double sided with different text each side, black lettering on white ground, measuring 18" x 13½" with some chipping. Also, a tinplate sign 15¼" x 15¾" 'McDougals Coal Order Office'. Together with a watercolor painting of Midland Railway Compound number 1044 coming head on toward the artist with a passenger train, the coaches curving away from the left. A couple of engines on shed to the extreme left. Mounted in its original, glazed wooden frame, hiding the possible signature and date. Image size 14" x 9½", overall in frame 25" x 20¾". Good condition for age, c1920's.

Scott South Staffordshire Reg, awarded for bravery in the vicinity of Contalmaison 30th - 31st July 1916 for acting as a stretcher bearer under heavy shell fire although wounded himself, together with a various silk postcards etc. ILLUSTRATED.
