A scarce Order of the Star of India and Order of the Indian Empire Medal Group to E. M. Gawne, comprising second type Companion of the Order of the Star of India, together with a second type Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire. Gawne was Chief Secretary to the Government of Madras, District Officer and with a seat on the Isle of Man.
Four various Zulu Knobkerrie collected by Lieutenant-Colonel Gawne, the first with two-tone hard wood spherical head, the haft with braided wire covering just beneath the head, swollen or flared foot, the second with shorter haft and wire binding at the midpoint, the third with smaller head, split, and longer lighter haft, the last with flattened, almost disc-shaped head, the haft with swollen or flared foot. By family tradition Lieutenant Colonel-Gawne was said to have acquired these spears during his service in the Zulu War of 1879 (Medal and clasp), however he did also serve on the Bechuanaland Expedition of 1884 and during the Boer War where he was wounded at Vryheid on the 11th of December 1900 and died of the following day, he was commanding the 2nd Bn the Royal Lancaster Regiment. A depiction of the moment of the Boer attack and the wounding of Gawne was depicted in the Graphic.

Waterloo Medal to Anthony Planner, 32nd Regiment of Foot (Cornwall), Anthony Planner was born in Epsom, Surrey in 1778. He attested aged 15 years and 9 months in Bath Somerset. Signing on for unlimited service. He was wounded in action to the left arm at the Battle of Salamanca on the 22nd July 1812. Confirmed as being present at the Battle of Waterloo, serving in Captain Hugh Harrisons Company. The 32nd Foot where in the thick of the action. Starting the battle with a strength of 647, by the end only 131 men were left fit. With a hand written envelope / letter showing it was Planners wish upon his death in this year 1840, that the medal be left to Captain George Lempriere a well known South African Family. The suspender has been replaced but does not detract from the condition of the medal which has fantastic provenance. As featured on the Antiques Road show.
