Includes detail of social history at the time, and detail of meetings on July 23, August 13 and September 3 at Boscastle, The Trevalga Cliffs and those who attended including Mr & Mrs Kirkness of Boscastle (rector), Mr & Mrs Symons of Trevalga (rector), Mr Avery of Boscastle, Mr, Mrs & Miss Robson of Camelford, Lawrence Richard and Charles Wint, Mr & Mrs Bree of Tintagel, Mr King, etc, note reads "at the Trevalga meeting Mrs Robson .. her fatal attack of J. Novess, July 23 1844." Oct 8 - King of France came to Portsmouth. Nov 29 Railway meeting in Town Hall. 1845 Jan 25 Captain Symonds buried. 1846 June 3-20 noting the movements of the swan and of bees in old hives and new plantation. 1847 July 8 - Much thunder, rain, lightening, a very great flood came down the road through Trevans house. "Causeway between Mahim and Bandora (Bandra), Bombay Island opened April 8 1845 by S G Artur the Governor with Sir Jas and Lady Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy, the founders and who paid all the expense. The work was designed by Capt. ... Sir Jas has expended in all 120,000 on the public good, the Queen sent him a medal and knighted him". Information of Queen Bess.  Includes notes of miles to and from places, Southampton to Gibraltar 1300, Gibraltar to Malta 1000, etc. A lot of notes of deaths, notes of imported goods comparing the years, mentions of gin and whiskey bottling. Mentions of Mr Avery, Mr Ellis, and Mr King throughout. An interesting piece of Cornish history. Together with two daily pocket companions, one dated 1838 Bunsley de Cowiey Nixon with three photographs in front flap, and the other dated 1846 J B King of Gloster or Hampstead with mentions of Cheltenham, Manchester and Liverpool. Plus an album with few poetry verses and accounts, some illustrations.  -

A silver medal from the University of Dublin Philosophical Society [to Richard Robert Cherry], inscribed on the reverse R.R. Cherry Composition 1881 46mm, pierced with suspension loop. Note: Richard Robert Cherry (1859-1923) politician and judge, was born in Waterford, Ireland. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin (1875-9), where he took part in athletics, as well as being a senior moderator and double gold medallist in mental science and history and political science. In 1881 he trained in law at the King's Inns, Dublin, and the Middle Temple, and was called to the Irish bar. Cherry won this medal whilst still a member of the University of Dublin Philosophical Society. he became a leading lawyer and judge, and was appointed Lord Chief Justice of Ireland in 1914.  -

A silver medal, from the University of Dublin Philosophical Society [to Caesar Litton Falkiner], inscribed on the reverse C.Litton Falkiner Oratory Session 1884-85, 46mm, pierced with suspension loop. Note: Caesar Litton Falkiner (1863-1908) was a politician, barrister and writer. Born in Dublin, he went to Trinity College where he graduated BA in 1886 and proceeded to MA in 1890. In 1885 he was elected President of the college Philosophical society (who had awarded him this silver medal the previous year), for giving a presidential address entitled 'A New Voyage to Utopia'. In 1887 Falkiner was called to the Irish bar, and in 1888 he began to work actively on behalf of the unionist cause. Falkiner devoted much of his time to the study of Irish history and literature, publishing a number of scholarly works, but he died at the age of 45 in an accident in the Alps.  -

A bronze medal, engraved within a wreath "1867 Henry Cheadle for Landscapes", 65mm.  Note: Henry Cheadle (1852-1910) was a landscape painter in oils, most of whose subjects were painted in the Midlands and North Wales. He studied at the Birmingham Society of Arts, receiving this medal in 1867, and was awarded a silver medal for studies undertaken in South Kensington. He exhibited 28 works at the Royal Society of British Artists, 105 works at Birmingham City Art Gallery, and elsewhere.  -

Sturgeon who was listed as missing in action, accompanying this lot is a letter from Buckingham Palace which reads as follows: "The Queen joins me in welcoming you on your release from the miseries and hardships, which you have endured with so much patience and courage. During these many months of trial, the early rescue of our gallant officers and men from the cruelties of their captivity has been uppermost in our thoughts. We are thankful that this longed for day has arrived and that back in the old country you will be able once more to enjoy the happiness of a home and to see good days amongst those who anxiously look for your return, signed George R."

Medals (3) of 269713 (488440) Pioneer Arthur Chantry R.E. Queen's South Africa Medal with the clasps 'Transvaal' 'Wittebergen', 'Driefontein', 'Paardeberg' and 'Cape Colony', British War Medal 1914-1920, and Allied Victory Medal 1914-1918. A resident of Peterborough. Enlisted on 24th October 1888 into the Royal Regiment of Artillery. After initial training at the Depot RA he was posted on 8th September 1890 to India and joined 34th Battery R.A. Transferred to the Army Reserve on 24 th October 1895. Recalled to the Colours on 4th December 1899 and served in the Boer War with the 82nd Battery, Royal Field Artillery, as a Gunner (69199). Returned to England on 27th June 1901 and medically discharged on 23rd October 1901. Re-enlisted on 9th September 1914 and joined Railway Troops, Royal Engineers. Compulsory transferred on 22nd February 1918 to the Labour Corps and saw further service in Salonika. Discharged 23rd January 1919.

Held as a prisoner of War in Bulgaria from 15th April 1918 until 31st October 1918. Repatriated to England on 17th November 1918. Demobilised on 18th February 1919.
