A Kings South Africa medal with bars S Africa 1901 and 1902, named to Cpl L Tomkins Bedford Regt. A George V Long Service Good Conduct Medal named to 6626 T.S.Mjr L F Tomkins Bedf R. As a QM Lieut in the Gt War he is entitled to British War & Victory Medals, having served in France from December 1917. In both the Bedford Regiment and the Army Cyclist Corps. He applied for these medals in September 1923, address 9 Longspring, Harebreaks, Watford. He had enlisted on the 16/10/1899 giving his age as 18 years. He also served in the 4/1st Hertfordshire Regiment, before being commissioned in 17/6/1918. In 1920 he transferred to the Territorial Forces, aged 40 years with the rank of Company Sergeant Major. Traces of edge narrowing and file marks under the etched naming. Pte Gadsby was entitled to a Gt War pair. A Queens South Africa Medal named (attempted erasure) to 4675 Pte A Sefton of the 18th Hussars. He was taken Prisoner of War at Nooltgedacht on the 5th September 1900. The medal lacks its suspender top bar, missing bars are Defence of Ladysmith, Laings Nek. His brother 3587 Pte W Sefton also served in the Regt, during the S African War 1899-1902. A Victory Medal named to S-18994 Pte D Dunn Gordon Highlanders. A BWM named to 200202 Sjt W R Lightning Norfolk Regt, entitled a Territorial Force War Medal and a Victory Medal. A Victory Medal named to 36960 Dvr RFA served F & F from 23/8/1914. A BWM named to 24223 Pte W Jones Ox & Bucks LI. KIA 6th Battalion 16/8/17 a native of Birmingham.

AN IRISH GUARDS GSM & WW11 GROUP OF FIVE MEDALS. A General Service Medal for Palestine 1936-39, named to 2718418 Gdsmn W Kidd. 1939/45 - Africa & Italy Stars, War Medal. The General Service Medal lacks the bar Palestine. The Irish Guards were in action in Norway in the Troopship Chrobry, which was attacked and the CO and many others were killed. Then in action during the evacuation of the Dutch Royal Family, from the Hook of Holland. Then again in action at Dunkirk, after a retraining period the 1st Battalion Irish Gds were in action in North Africa. It was in this campaign that L.Cpl Jhn P Kenneally won the Victoria Cross. Then the regiment took part in the Anzio landings, and subsequent actions prior to being so depleted in men that they were returned to the UK 2718418 Guardsman W (C) Kidd was wounded in action on the 7/2/1944. He had joined with his brother? Gdsmn A Kidd number 2718442.

A VICTORIAN 91st FOOT LONG SERVICE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL. Awarded in 1871 to Saml Leverton who was discharged from the Princess Louise's Argyllshire Highlanders, in October 1875. After 21 years and 20 days service, Named to 3857 Pte S Leverton 91st Foot. It was during his service years the regiment were stationed at Kamptee , East Indies. The son of Henry and Sarah Leverton, he was in possession of five Good Conduct Badges. With only one entry in the Regimental Defaulters Book. A native of Sutton in Ashfield, Notts. With photocopied service details present.

AN ABYSSINIA MEDAL TO HMS SATELLITE. In toned condition with reverse naming to J T Brooks. Boy 1 Cl. HMS. Satellite. The roll states that on 24th November 1870 it was forwarded to John Brooks. He was then serving on HMS Dryad. During the Abyssinian Expedition HMS Satellite reached the man made pier, and was able to condense sea water, at the rate of 32,000 gallons a day. Naval Parties from HMS Dryad and Satellite of some 80 officers and men, took part in the assault on Magdala. HMS Satellite was a Corvette of screw and sail propulsion, of some 2190 tons. 292 Medals listed for HMS Satellite. See illustration

Mayfield, 3 Abercorn Road, Mill Hill, London. It is dated for 23rd March 1921. In pencil is written Gazetted January 6th 1919, from the Central Chancery of the Order of Knighthood; Sir, I have the honour to transmit to you, under separate registered cover the insignia of a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, the receipt of which I would ask you to be so good as to acknowledge on the attached form. The Grant of Dignity is enclosed within. I have the honour to be, Sir Your obedient Servant (Registrar and Secretary) Also the original grant of Dignity (Military) dated 1/1/1919 to Captain William James Dew RAF. A Queens South Africa Medal with five bars, named to 5704 Corpl W J Dew Middlesex Regt. Bars Cape Colony - Transvaal - Orange Free State - S. Africa 1901 and S. Africa 1902. On one roll it states only four clasps issued. A commission document to W J Dew dated 9/10/1914 to be a 2/Lieutenant in, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regt) Land Forces. A 1914/15 Star named to 2.Lt.W.J. Dew. The Queens Regiment. He proceeded to France on the 7th April 1914. British War & Victory Medals named to 2./Lt W J Dew. Adjudant Queens Regt 25/3/1916. On his MIC details he is listed as RFC & RAF, receiving a Flying Commission on the 1st August 1917 with the Rank of T/Capt. His original RAF Commission Document dated 1st December 1918 in the rank of Captain. He was serving in the Administrative Branch. Also his original GV1 Commission Document dated 1/9/1939 with the RAFVR and the rank of Flight Lieutenant (10/11/1939) A Defence Medal, is with the group though Forces lists him as receiving the 1939/45 Star and War Medal. He is also listed as War Substantive T/Squadron Leader RAFVR 1/6/1940, receiving a Mention in Despatches 1/1/1941 in the London Gazette. A Memorial Plaque named to Walter Kelly, in its card box of issue. Walter Kelly a native of Sunderland proceeded to France with the Queens Bays on the 26th August 1914. He is entitled to a 1914 Star with Clasp and Rosettes, which his father successfully applied for in 1920. Born in Bishopswearmouth, Sunderland C1884, he Died of Wounds 25/9/1916 and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery. The son of Thomas and Emily Kelly of 4, Park Row, Southwick-on Wear, Sunderland. No record has yet been found confirming the Delhi Durbar, engraved in upright capitals.

HMS Barrosa, with ghost dated reverse. John Fisher enlisted for a 12 year duration in 1896 aged 18 years old. A full copied sheet of his service until 1908, is with the medal. He then joined the RFR at Portsmouth, upon completion of service. Other ships listed include HMS Hyacinth, Good Hope, Firequeen, Defiance, etc. There were 123 QSA's awarded to Barrosa's Officers & Crew. 25 of who received the bar Paardeberg. 24 of whom received the bar Driefontein. 57 received the bar Cape Colony and 17 received the bar Transvaal. A ROYAL MARINES FOUR BAR QSA TO HMS POWERFUL. A ghost dated four bar Queens South Africa Medal, with bars Belmont-Modder River-Paardeberg and Driefontein. Named to 6477 Pte A Hammond R.M.L.I. HMS Powerful. Arthur Hammond enlisted the age of 18 in London for a 12 year duration. A native of Tunbridge Wells, occupation a labourer. He re-enlisted in 1905 His photocopied service records shows he landed with the Naval Brigade 19th October 1899. Attached to the Kimberley Relief Force in the Boer War. Took part in all actions (4) fought by that force. Viz Belmont Action, Modder River, Magersfontein. South African Grant 1899-1901 paid. Gordons states 692 medals to the HMS Powerful, including 275 for the Defence of Ladysmith. Belmont (105). Modder River (79). Paardeberg (71) and Driefontein (69). See Illustration

AN HMS FORTE QSA WITH BAR NATAL. A single bar Natal Queens South Africa Medal, named to 151116 A.B D Nevill. HMS Forte. One of the 177 recipients from this ship, who were awarded this bar. Daniel Neville born 9th April 1874 at Hackney, Middlesex. Enlisted for a 12 year duration aged 18 in 1892. Having served on various ships including HMS Wildfire, Repulse, etc during his time. His records shows nearly a dozen terms in the cells, including 'Did return from leave drunk and smuggled a bottle of whiskey into Dockyard'. Warrant served did stay absent for over 56 hrs beyond leave, etc. Cells 14 days and 10 days until time expired. From fair to Very Good conduct reports, over the years See Illustration

A BALTIC MEDAL NAMED TO A RECIPIENT ON HMS CRESSEY. Named in neatly engraved upright capitals, to W P Bell H M Ship Cressey. HMS Cressy was launched at Chatham in July 1853 and was of screw propulsion, carrying a crew of 750 Officers and Men. A two-decker of 80 guns , commanded by Captain Richard L Warren in the Baltic. Scrapped in 1867.

Hugh Mahaffey is listed as being slightly wounded on the final attack on the Redan 18/6/1855. The 30th Foot Cambridgeshire Regiment had casaualty figures of 43 Killed and 112 Wounded. Named to 1880 Pte F M Findley Midd'x R. Frank Middleton Findley a native of Hull. 5. A British war Medal named to 77909 Sjt A S Revell RAF. Serving as Pte number 14913 he served in the Ox & Bucks LI in France from the 21/9/1915. Whilst in the RFC/RAF he served in 85 Squadron. Mick Mannock VC commanded the Squadron.

An India General Service Medal with bar Malabar 1921-22, named to 571207 Pte W Huxter Dorset Regt. William Huxter served in France from the 4/12/1914, with the 1st Battalion of the Dorset Regiment. Later transferred to the the 2nd Battalion, where he served in India from 19/101/1919. Thence onto Egypt in January 1922. A native of Bridport Dorset, William was born in April 1889 and by profession a Cordite Worker in Poole Dorset in 1939.

British War & Victory Medals named to Lt Col A H Royds, the latter with an MID emblem. Albert Harry Royds was born in Rochdale Lancashire on the 7th April 1876. The son of Edmund Albert Nuttall Royds of Falinge .Lancs. Educated at Eton College and after Militia service was commissioned into the Scots Guards 25th May 1899. Ordered to proceed to South Africa with his Regiment he took part in various operations. In Ops in the Orange River Colony May-November 29th 1900. Including actions at Biddulsphberg and Wittebergen. 1st-29th July Ops in the Transvaal and the Orange River Colony 30-11-1900 until 31-5-1902. Lieutenant Scots Guards LG 24th November 1900 Captain Scots Guards LG 1-11-1904 T'Major Scots Guards 28-10-1914 Major Scots Guards LG 28-1-1915. (Commanding Lines of Communications) August 1915 granted grade of Assistant Adjutant-General. Major with rank of Lieutenant Colonel retired 19-11-1919. Awarded the OBE 1-1-1919. Which he was presented by the King on the 5th April 1919. Served August 1915 until December 1918 in France as Commandant Guards Divisional Base Depot. Mentioned in Despatches May and December 1918. Married in June 1905 Hannover Square London, Adeliza Beatrix Drummond with whom he had five children. He died on the 7th May 1952, leaving some £91,790 in effects. See Illustration

Entitled to a 2nd Class Russian Order of St Anne. Awarded whilst serving with the 6th Battalion HLI, with both OBE and MID for Archangel 3/2/1920. Lieutenant Colonel William Alexander Kininmouth Murray was awarded the OBE 3/2/1920 page 1374. For valuable services rendered in connection with military operations in Archangel. North Russia dated 11/11/1919. 6th HLI attached MGC. MID 3/2/1920 page 1382 Valuable and distinguished service rendered in connection with the operations in North Russia during the period 25th march to the 26th September 1919. 11/11/1919 MGC , Murray Temp Major W A K 6th HLI T/F. 2/Lt 1/12/1913 Lt 10/9/1914 T/Cpt 14/7/1915 Cpt 21/7/1915 Major 1/6/1916 T/Lt-Col 5/5/1939 Lt Col 24/8/1939 He died at Elgin in his 90th year, the husband of Shona and father of Alec Murray. A Kings South Africa Medal with bars South Africa 1901 & 1902, named to Lt G A Dick-Cunyngham Rifle Bde. A 1914 Star with clasp named to Capt G A Dick Cunyngham Rif Bgde. British War & Victory Medals named to Capt G A Dick-Cunyngham , the latter with MID emblem. George Alistair Dick-Cunyngham was born on the 11th May 1881, educated at Eton College. He served in the South African War and retired in January 1911, being recalled in 1914. Stationed in the UK and Malta thence Ireland from 1902-1910. Temp Major 6th Reserve Battalion Rifle Brigade, at sometime attached 2nd Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Medal address given as 50 pall mall, London, SW1. He died in London 21/12/1940. The nephew of Willaim Henry Dick-Cunyngham VC.

A PRESENTATION 1822 PATTERN HEAVY CAVALRY SWORD. A Victorian Heavy Cavalry Officers sword, with very clean 36.3/4" blade complete with its steel scabbard. VR under a crown above oak leaves, with scrolls on both sides of the blade. On the A side, Presented to John Hill Bombay Engineers by his friend John Forres Bombay Cavalry 24th November 1848. On the B side Mundee Ava Decbr 21st 1848. O God the Lord The Strength of my Salvation. Thou Hast covered my head in the Day of Battle. Psalm CXL 7th Verse. John Hill became an Ensign on the 11th June 1834. Lieutenant 16th August 1843. Captain 13th June 1849. Major 2nd August 1854. Lt Colonel 4th December 1857. Colonel 6th March 1858. He took part in the actions at Mandi Awa (Mundee Ava) which was commanded by Major General Whish and also operations against the enemy at Sidi-lal-ki-bed on the 27th December 1848. He was a Field Engineer with the Multan Field Force, during the Second Sikh War 1848-49. Mandi Awa was a fortified mound, which British Forces captured with the surrounding suburbs. During the storming an artillery shell exploded showering a nine pounder with shrapnel. Lt Younghusband was killed and Lt Hill (Field Engineer) wounded Lt John Forbes then a Captain served in Sind & Afghanistan 1841-42. (Ghuznee & Kabul Medal) Later in the Persian Campaign, where he was severely wounded at the Battle of Kooshab. He led the famous Charge of the 3rd Light Cavalry against the Persian Infantry, who had formed a square. (Medal & Clasp CB) Again during the Indian Mutiny Campaign with the Central Field Force. ST J JERUSALEM-BWM-1935 JUBILEE MEDALS TO LT COL W SPONG. The three mounted for wear with a silver St John Jerusalem award, at the front. A British War Medal named to Major W A Spong, with an unnamed George V 1935 Silver Jubilee Medal. Together with his second wife's medals British War and Victory Medals, named to S.M.P. A Daly T.F.N.S. Both groups have matching miniatures groups, each mounted for wear. Also a WW11 Condolence Slip named to Lieutenant-Colonel W A Spong. Lt Colonel William Arthur Spong MB BCL BAQ LM RoT died on the 22nd December 1940 whilst Co of the base Hospital Tidworth, being buried at Tidworth Military Cemetery. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps before the Great War, during which as a Major he was serving in Mhow India. When his Medal details were returned in 1921, he had listed a M in D as 'missing'. Officers of the Medical Services states he was awarded a Victory medal, which the MIC proves incorrect (BWM only). He is probably entitled to a 1939/45 War Medal, possibly a Defence Medal also. Born in Liverpool on the 11th April 1883, he was educated in Ireland (TC Dublin) Lieutenant 29/07/1907, Captain 29/1/1911. T/Mjr 25/2/18 till February 23rd 1919. Major 29/7/1919. Temp Lt/Col 6/10/1931, Lt Colonel 19/10/1931. Retired on pay 11/4/1938, rejoined 2/9/1939. He had served in India from 1909 until 1919. Again in India 1921-25 also 1930-35. He retired as the Commanding Officer British Military Hospital Murree, on the 3/9/35 (held the post from 1931) then on the Reserve of Officers until 11/4/1938 His first wife Violet Frances Horendon (who died in India) had two children Vivian and Jill Spong. He at one time was living in Bell House, Sutton Benger, Wilts. After he lost his 1st wife it was in September 1919 ( Taunton Somerset) he married his 2nd Wife Annette Daly, (Special Military Probationer) of the Territorial Force Nursing Service. S M P Annette Daly served in Salonika from 23/11/1917. Her next of kin details list a C Eason Esq, Harrieston, Dalkey, Co Dublin. Also a related unnamed group of four medals, 1939/45 & Burma Stars, Defence & War Medals with a matching group of miniatures. By provenance the medals awarded to Major A V H Spong R Tanks.

A Long Service Good Conduct Medal awarded to 5678 Pte H Hay Scots Fus Gds. 2nd type with swivel suspender and losing the badge of Hannover centre. 1831-1871, when it lost the Fusiliers in the Regimental Title. Mounted for wear with a 1911 Coronation/Durbar ribbon.

A TRIO TO A 4th WORCESTER REGT MILITARY CROSS RECIPIENT. A copy Military Cross, a 1914/15 Star named to 6515 C S Maj J Lunn. Worc:R. British War & VIctory Medals named to 2/Lt J Lunn. John Lunn was commissioned into the 4th Battalion of the Worcester Regt, from the ranks. He had served in 2b Theatre of War (Balkans) from April 1915. He is mentioned several times in the Worcester Regiment History of the Gt War. It was whilst he was serving as a 2/Lieutenant acting Staff Captain, that he was awarded the Military Cross for his good work for 3 days, during the Battle of Cambrai London Gazette 16/9/1918 Issue 10935. 'His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve the following award to the under-mentioned, in recognition of their gallantry and devotion to duty in the field.' Awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as adjutant to his battalion. At a critical moment he collected a party of men who had lost their officers and were much disheartened, leading them forward through intense Machine-gun fire he re-established the line at a very important position. His medal address in August 1920 was given as John Lunn MC, Hildene, Tower Rd, Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield. Also an unnamed group to his son by provenance, 1939/45 , Africa with bar 8th Army & Italy Stars, Defence & War Medals. The group bar mounted for wear. See Illustration
