Sir Frank Bowling OBE RA (British, b.1934). 'Ace of Spades'. Acrylic / collage on Paper, signed and dated verso. 30 x 21.7cm. Frank Bowling has been hailed as one of the finest British artists of his generation. Born in British Guiana in 1934, Bowling arrived in London in 1953, graduating from the Royal College of Art with the silver medal for painting in 1962. By the early 1960s, he was recognised as an original force in London’s art scene with a style combining figurative, symbolic and abstract elements. After moving to New York in 1966, Bowling’s commitment to modernism meant he was increasingly focused on material, process and colour, so that by 1971 he had abandoned the use of figurative imagery. Bowling’s iconic ‘Map Paintings’ (1967-71), which include the stencilled landmasses of South America, Africa and Australia, embody his transition from figuration to pure abstraction. As a contributing editor at Arts Magazine (1969-1972), Bowling rejected the idea that ‘artists who happen to be black’ should be making overtly political or protest art and defended those engaged in abstraction. His critical writings represent a significant contribution to intellectual debates on ‘black art’. In 1969, Bowling organised, curated, and wrote the catalogue essay for the notable exhibition, 5+1, at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, and Princeton University, which showcased the work of five African American abstract artists as well as his own recent paintings. Bowling exhibited six large ‘Map Paintings’ in a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1971. From 1973 to 1978, Bowling experimented with ideas of chance and ‘controlled accidents’, pouring paint from a two-metre height to create his visually arresting ‘Poured Paintings’.Bowling returned to London in 1975 but continued to spend significant periods in New York. His sculptural paintings of the 1980s include embedded objects and thickly textured canvases, and have been described as evoking landscape, riverbeds and geologic strata. Visible in his work, are legacies of both the English landscape tradition and American abstraction. Bowling shares Turner and Constable’s preoccupation with light, never more evident than in his dazzling ‘Great Thames’ paintings of the late 1980s. Bowling’s experiments with ammonia, gel, metallic and pearlescent paint create incandescent reactions on the canvas. His recent work encompasses collage, poured paint, stencilling, staining, and stitching canvases, bringing together techniques honed over a lifetime of painting.Bowling became a Royal Academician in 2005 and was awarded the OBE for services to Art in 2008. His work is represented in fifty collections worldwide and has been exhibited in 160 group and 100 solo exhibitions, including the 2017-19 touring exhibition, Mappa Mundi, and the hugely successful retrospective at Tate Britain in 2019. Bowling is the subject of a BBC documentary, Frank Bowling's Abstract World, which coincided with the opening of the Tate Retrospective. At the age of 86, Bowling works every day in his South London studio, accompanied by his wife, Rachel, other family members and friends, forever driven by his fascination with pushing the vast and radiant possibilities of paint.Transplant Links Community is a UK registered non-religious and non-political charity that saves the lives of children and adults in the developing world who suffer from life-threatening end stage kidney disease. Offered from the National Motorcycle Museum Collection c.1934 Morgan MX2 Super Sports RoadsterRegistration no. OSU 688Frame no. D927 (see text)Engine no. MX2/517•Ultimate v-twin Morgan •Purchased by the Museum in 1989•Restored by The Light Car and Cyclecar Restoration Co of Birmingham•Believed unused since restorationIts superior power-to-weight ratio enabled H F S Morgan's humble, three-wheeled cyclecar to outperform many a larger-engined four-wheeler, and its maker was not slow to capitalise on his creation's competition potential. A Gold Medal in the 1911 London-Exeter-London Reliability Trial with Morgan himself driving was followed by victory in the inaugural cyclecar race at Brooklands the following year, Harry Martin taking the chequered flag three minutes ahead of the field. Racetrack successes led directly to road-going spin-off in the form of the Grand Prix model, introduced for 1914. The first Aero sports model, inspired by the Grand Prix, followed immediately after WWI. Subsequent technological developments included the fitting of front brakes, operated by hand lever, from 1924 and the adoption of a new chassis - the M-type - on the new Super Sports model in 1928. This new chassis was some 2½' lower than its predecessor and undoubtedly helped Morgans trounce the opposition at the New Cyclecar Club's meeting at Brooklands later that year. In 1931 a conventional three-speeds-plus-reverse gearbox was introduced, the old two-speed transmission disappearing soon after. A more refined model ¬- the F4, with 8hp Ford Model Y four-cylinder power unit – appeared in 1934, later forming the basis of the first four-wheeled Morgan. From the mid-1930s onwards, Morgan three-wheelers, like George Brough's superlative motorcycles, were fitted with Matchless v-twin engines in preference to those from JAP, and for the three-wheeler enthusiast for whom high performance remained top priority, the Matchless-powered Super Sports was the model of choice. This Matchless-engined Morgan Super Sports was purchased by the Museum from Brian Verrall in April 1989 and comes with a copy of the purchase receipt. The machine has been restored by The Light Car and Cyclecar Restoration Co of Birmingham (see dashboard plaque) and is believed unused since restoration. It should be noted that the chassis number has been taken from the aforementioned receipt and accompanying V5C document. The Morgan's mechanical condition is not known; accordingly, prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to its condition, completeness, correctness, or otherwise prior to bidding.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The ex-works; Ron Langston; 1958 ISDT 1958 Ariel 497cc HT5Registration no. XOB 440Frame no. CRT 582Engine no. CAMB 1714•ISDT Gold Medal winner•An older restoration •Formerly part of the Autokraft CollectionAriel was one of the last British manufacturers to introduce a trials frame with rear suspension, the prototype of what would become the HT5 first appearing at the Scottish Six Days event in 1955 with production proper commencing in September of that year. Little was achieved by the works HT5s in their first season but the arrival of Ron Langston for 1956 brought with it the success Ariel had been seeking, their new signing winning the Cotswold and Greensmith trials. For the next few seasons the HT5 was the class of the field. Arguably the most capable of the 'heavyweight' trials irons, the HT5 disappeared along with the other Ariel four-strokes in 1959 after only 450-or-so had been made, though Sammy Miller's famous and much modified example - 'GOV 132' - would continue winning at the highest level well into the 1960s. Great Britain's entry in the 1958 International Six Days Trial (ISDT) in West Germany included the Ariel HT5 offered here, which was ridden by Ron Langston as part of the Vase A Team. Although the efforts of GB's Trophy and Vase Teams were thwarted by machine failures, there were some notable individual performances, among them Langston's, who finished with no marks lost and a coveted Gold Medal. It must have been close run thing, though, as the Ariel Team's bikes suffered frame cracks at the headstock on the fifth day and only made it to the finish thanks to jury-rigged repairs. All the frames were replaced back at the factory.Previous owner Bob Gardiner purchased this historic ISDT Ariel at Brooks' sale of the Autokraft Collection at the RAF Museum, Hendon in March 1999 (Lot 24, catalogue on file). After many years in obscurity, 'XOB 440' had re-emerged in 1986, appearing in The Classic Motor Cycle's November issue (copy on file). Then owned by Phil Ives, it had been restored by its previous owner and was in one-day trials trim. Ives then set about acquiring the many missing parts necessary to return 'XOB 440' to ISDT specification and, at the time of the article's publication, the machine was not yet finished. It is not known when the project was completed, or the machine acquired by Autokraft. In April 2019 the ex-Langston Ariel was sold at Bonhams' Stafford sale (Lot 311) and shortly thereafter was acquired by the current vendor (purchase receipt on file). As presented here, 'XOB 440' displays many of the features that differentiated the ISDT HT5 from its one-day trials counterpart: dual seat, tyre inflator, paired control cables, and front tyre 'mud claw' among others. It should be noted that the engine number is that of a roadster Red Hunter, possibly indicating an engine or crankcase swap. Accompanying documentation includes hand-written notes, a selection of photographs, photocopied literature, and old/current V5C Registration Certificates.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

c.1955 Cimatti 160ccRegistration no. not UK registeredFrame no. 1027Engine no. 1027Cimatti was founded in Bologna in 1937 by gold medal-winning Olympic cyclist Marco Cimatti. Not surprisingly, the company manufactured bicycles at first, only turning to powered two-wheelers in 1950. The firm prospered, and its products were widely exported, being sold in the USA through the Gambles department stores. By the mid-1960s the range had expanded to include a motor scooter and a three-wheeled delivery truck in addition to mopeds and lightweights, usually powered by either Moto Morini or Moto Minarelli two-stroke engines. Cimatti survived the 1960s 'Japanese Invasion' but succumbed to the early 1980s recession, closing its doors in 1984. An older restoration by Mr Pirro Loretti, the beautiful Cimatti offered here is a credit to its restorer, all the more so given the poor condition it was in beforehand (see photographs on file). There are no documents with this Lot.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: NN If purchased by a UK resident, this machine is subject to a NOVA declaration, undertaken by Bonhams upon a successful sale, to facilitate the registration of the machine here in the UK.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

KARL PAVLOVIČ BRIULLOV 1799 - 1852: HORSEWOMAN WITH A DOG Ca. 1850 Oil on canvas 61 x 51 cm Signed: Lower left "C.Brulloff" Karl Briullov was one of the most sought-after artists in his time and place, and the Paris Salon awarded him a gold medal for his historical themes. Genre and portrait painting were among his strongest features. Pushkin and Gogol likened his paintings to Rubens and Van Dyck, and he was hired to portray various celebrities, such as the opera composer Giovanni Pacini, who had his two daughters painted by him - their portrait hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery now. Looking at the master details of the portrait of the Horserider with a Dog, there is no doubt of considerable painting experience, the rider's face is very charming and porcelain soft, the accessories are detailed and the horse is painted in dynamic motion with very noble fine features.Published by: Gribanov, T .: Exhibition Russian School, oil paintings XVIII, XiX and XX century, Tatyana gallery, 1988.
