A Queen's South Africa medal, (1899-1902) 2nd type reverse with ghost dates, having S.A. 1901, Laing's Nek, Transvaal, Relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free State and Tugela Heights clasps, naming 5588 Pte. H. SNOW 2/Dorset Reg. 5588 Private H. Snow was killed in action 26/09/1901 in the battle at Itala Mountain, included in this lot are letters from Captain Cecil Alured Rowley D.S.O., the first dated 4/10/01 informing Snow's mother of his death "whilst gallantly repelling an attack of the Boers on the English position, he is buried with six others on the top of Itala Mountain." The second dated 10/12/01 in which he reassures Snow's mother of his conduct "It was very satisfactory and he always did his best to do his duty. He died doing his duty on Itala Mountain when the party in which he belonged was surrounded by the Boers he fought on until shot from behind by a Boer." To be sold with a formation patch and buttons, contained in a Queen's S.A. Christmas gift tin.

Parker 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He took command of a bombing party and repelled repeated enemy counter attacks. Finally, he held the post single-handed against an attack after all his men had become casualties.

FUS., Long Service and Good Conduct, 12560. W.O. CL. II. A. KERRY. D.C.M. R. FUS. and Faithful Service in the Special Constabulary, ARTHUR KERRY, in a fitted black leather case, together with miniature D.C.M., BWM, Victory and LSGC medals, cased. (9) Arthur Kerry served with the Nigeria Regiment West African Frontier Force and was awarded the D.C.M. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at the Namupa Mission on 16th October, 1917. When his company was ordered to retire, he covered the retirement with his machine gun and was later wounded in the knee. London Gazette 25/02/1920 page 2288. The West African Frontier Force was first formed in 1900 to administer the regular colonial forces in British West Africa. It was mainly composed of African troops with British NCOs and consisted of the Queen's Own Nigeria Regiment; the Gold Coast Regiment; the Royal Sierra Leone Regiment; and the Gambia Regiment. One of the forces most bloody encounters was the Battle of Mahiwa (Tanzania) in October 1917, when they were cut off from the Namupa Mission by General von Lettow-Vorbeck’s German column. The Battle of Mahiwa was described by Captain W.D. Downes in his book ‘With the Nigerians in German East Africa’ as the " most disastrous day for the Nigerian Army since the formation of the force " and " The most savage battle in the history of African conflict ". The British forces were heavily defeated, taking over 2,700 casualties, and were forced to withdraw.
