MCGONAGLE WILLIAM: (1925-1999) United States Naval Officer, Medal of Honor winner for his actions while in command of the USS Liberty when it was attacked by Israel in the Eastern Mediterranean on 8th June 1967 during the Six-Day War. Signed and inscribed colour 8 x 10 photograph, the image depicting McGonagle in a half-length pose, in naval uniform and wearing his Medal of Honor. Signed in bold black ink to a light area of the image. Together with a T.L.S., William L. MacGonagle, one page, 4to, Escondido, California, 8th August 1994, to Steve Keyser, on the printed stationery of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. McGonagle informs his correspondent that he has received their letter and has signed their copy of the book Assault on the Liberty and autographed a photograph, adding, 'I am also enclosing an extract from “Above and Beyond - A history of the Medal of Honor from the Civil War to Vietnam” that you may find interesting' and the postscript, in part, 'Thank you for your service to our country too…' in his hand. Also including a T.L.S., W.L. McGonagle, one page, 4to, Escondido, California, 8th August 1994, to Tex Powell. McGonagle thanks his correspondent for the clipping about the three Medal of Honor recipients from University of Redlands. Neatly trimmed at the foot.
