A George VI Military medal to 2191135 A Sjt J McKinnon, 2nd Battalion Border Regiment, ["On 17 Feb 45, at the eastern extremity of the bridgehead on the south bank of the R Irrawaddy, Sgt McKinnon was commanding the section of 3" mortars under the command of A Coy, 2 Border, who were attacking the village of Alethaung. As Mortar O P, he moved forward with the leading troops of the attacking coy, and was one of the first to cross the chaung which was in the line of advance and continuously strafed by enemy LMG and sniper fire. After crossing the chaung, he located the position of a persistent sniper, and accounted fro him personally. Later, whilst still in the forefront of the attacking troops, he located a bunker position, and, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, dashed forward and hurled grenades into the bunker, and silenced it. His conduct throughout the whole action was a source of inspiration to all who were near him, and by his courage and devotion to duty, he showed gallantry of a very high order."
