Wing Commander Edward John Brooks D.F.C. (37378), born in Bombay on the 11th November 1913. A highly collectable and historically important collection of documents and effects relating to the life and aviation career of this renowned airman notable for his part in the 30th January 1940 sinking of the U-boat (U-55) in World War two off the Scilly Isles whilst piloting a Pembroke Dock based Sunderland Flying Boat N9025 on a sortie of 5 hours 30 mins. The event is documented in his flying log book together with congratulatory telegram messages from his superiors. In June 1939 in Sunderland N-6135 he transported Admiral Sir D. Pound, C-in-C from Alexandria to Malta en-route to the U.K. He was also the pilot of the last operational Lancaster Bomber "D-Delta", RF325 flown on the 15th October 1956 out of St. Mawgan, Cornwall to Wroughton for breaking up, the flight having a duration of 1 hour 25 mins. Air Chief Marshall Sir Walter Dawson shook hands with the crew prior to their departure. The two Log Books included in this lot detail his pilot training at Bristol Flying School, Filton commencing on the 27/08/1935 in a Tiger Moth G-ACBF, his first solo flight of 25 minutes taking place at 1545 hours on 10/09/1935 after 15 hours and 35 minutes dual instruction, his first flight test being passed on 23/09/1935 in Tiger Moth G-ABSW. The final entry in his log book, which has many notes regarding incidents and experiences is, fittingly, a Mach 1 flight with Capt. Don Frazier in a Super Sabre F100F DW52844 out of Wethersfield on 13/09/1959. This lot also includes his Dalton Aerial Navigation Computer Mark VII, a silver I.D. wristlet, his Moss Bros Cap, Epaulettes and R.A.F. wings, fabric Badges including Civil Defence Corps, five of R.A.F. School of Maritime Reconnaissance as worn during the flight of the Lancaster, various medal braids including a D.F.C. braid but his D.F.C. and other medals are absent. A very touching letter dated 18/01/1941 from his "Loving Old Mother" with sepia snaps of them both and conveying her excitement at her "darling John" being awarded the D.F.C. Three Oak shields with the insignia of his units, driving licences, files of training material, etc., all contained in his military metal trunk. A great deal of further information regarding his flying career is available from the auctioneers' office.
