CARLOS CRUZ-DIEZ (1923-2019)Induction Chromatique á Double Fréquence Montalbán 11 2016 signed, signed with the artist's initials, titled, dated and inscribed PARIS 2016 and EDA on a plaque affixed to the reversechromatography on aluminium 100 by 150 cm. 39 3/8 by 59 1/16 in.Footnotes:This work is accompanied by a photo-certificate of authenticity issued by the Cruz-Diez Art Foundation, Paris.Provenance Atelier Cruz-Diez, ParisAcquired directly from the above by the present owner in 2016Exhibited Madrid, In Situ Art Projects, Odalys Group, Ambientación Cromática Montalbán 11: Carlos Cruz-Diez, 2016-2017Carlos Cruz-Diez, one of the leading protagonists of the Kinetic and Optical Art movements, was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1923 to parents who encouraged his artistic inclinations at an early age. When he was seventeen, Cruz-Diez enrolled at the Art School of Caracas and supported himself as an illustrator and graphic designer. After cementing his career as an artist and deciding to expand his practice, Cruz-Diez moved to Europe, first living in Spain, and later settling in France in 1960. With Victor Vasarely, Joseph Albers and Bridget Riley as contemporaries, Cruz-Diez merged Pop-Art, Kinetic Art, and Op-Art to explore ways in which art can be interactive. He has dedicated his life to the research of colour, line and perception and is widely considered as one of the greatest artists of the 21st century. Induction Chromatique á Double Fréquence Montalbán 11 is a superb example of artist's technique of layering colours and combining them to produce a stunning environment that demonstrates the variability and ambiguity of colour. Another work of this series is located in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Cruz-Diez's work is based on the moiré effect, in which lines of contrasting colour give the viewer an impression of movement. As described by the artist himself 'the Chromatic Inductions offer a solution in order to assimilate real space and time to a static plan. A chromatic event occurs in these works and continuously evolves depending on the spectator's position but also the changes of light, in contrast to nature and the purpose of the traditional painting space.' (the artist in: Cruz-Diez, 'Induction Chromatique, 1963' cruz-diez.com, 27 February 2024) In the Induction Chromatique series, Cruz-Diez studies the phenomenon of the 'after image', also known as retinal persistence. When staring at a colour for a certain amount of time, the retina preserves an image of the surface even after looking away, but in its complementary colour. For example, the viewer will see the complimentary colour green after staring at a red surface for a while. In Induction Chromatique, the artist manages to stabilise and make visible a fleeting phenomenon, that can only be observed under particular circumstances. Cruz-Diez shows that the colour induced on our retina, is just as real as the painted colour; essentially depicting the two phases of the phenomenon simultaneously, creating an optical effect and providing a more intense art experience. The present work carries with it a truly remarkable cluster of sensations by removing colour from the plane and bringing it into the physical space as a reality. The work confronts the viewer with real time movement and the continuous development of colour, generated by Cruz-Diez's fascinating ability to evoke a hypnotic state. As explained by Cruz-Diez, his practice faces the viewers with a real-time event. Colour is created by the viewer through their own means of perception. In Induction Chromatique á Double Fréquence Montalbán 11 the colour gains an intrinsic value that behaves independently to affirm itself in its own environment. As seen in nature, colour is ever-evolving and in the present work, Cruz-Diez allows for this change of colour to happen, mirroring the changes that happen in nature to provoke engagement between the viewer and the work.Carlos Cruz-Diez has been in countless exhibitions, including the seminal exhibition 'The Responsive Eye' at The Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1965. In 1970, the artist was included in the 35th Venice Biennale at the Venezuelan Pavilion. In 2002, he was awarded by France the medal for Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Exhibitions in New York and Houston in 2008 and 2011 brought further recognition to his work that would be followed by Op Art retrospectives at the Royal Academy, London and El Museo del Barrio, New York. Since then, Cruz-Diez has shown his works at the Tate Modern, London; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; The Geffen Contemporary at The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles; Centre Pompidou-Metz, Metz and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, amongst many others. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Frank Stella (American, b. 1936). Lithograph and screenprint on paper titled "Sinjerli Variation Squared with Colored Ground 1A," depicting the artist's signature geometric protractor composition with a painterly quality on a mustard yellow ground. The geometric circle is comprised of interlocking shapes in a rainbow of colors. Executed in 1981, this work is number six of ten artist's proofs along with a further edition of 61. Pencil signed, numbered, and dated along the lower left.Provenance: Private Connecticut Collection, 1988; Private Minnesota Collection.Reference: Richard H. Axsom, "Frank Stella Prints: A Catalogue Raisonne," New York 2016, cat. no. 130, pp. 217-218, illustrated in color.Lot Essay:By the age of 25, Stella was already being recognized for his talents, being included in "Three Young Americans" at the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College as well as "Sixteen Americans" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York all before 1960. By 1961 he had moved on from illusionistic space to flat and often irregular shapes, which would become his artistic signature. His works became increasingly minimalistic during this time, though he would extend into three-dimensional space in the 1970s and 80s, which he would self-describe as maximalist. The "Sinjerli" series was based on a painting done during his "Protractor Series" executed between 1967-71. Sinjerli was an ancient Anatolian city that reached its zenith in the 14th century BCE. The fortified citadel was surrounded by a nearly perfect double-walled circle, whose symmetry and geometry inspired the "Sinjerli Variation" series. With each subsequent work, he introduced a subtle new variation, experimenting with unique color combinations and mediums. In addition to numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the world, his works are held in the collections of prestigious institutions such as the Hirshhorn Museum, the Whitney, the Toledo Museum of Art, LACMA, the Guggenheim, MoMA, and many others. In 2009, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama.Sight; height: 31 3/4 in x width: 31 3/4 in. Framed; height: 39 1/2 in x width: 39 1/2 in.

Melton Fisher in The Studio, vol. 42, 1908, pp. 176-181. Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters, Woodbridge, 1995, p. 171.'The subjects he chose were characteristic of modern Venetian life; his canvases were records of his observation of the people among whom he found himself, and by their brilliant reality and clever statements of picturesque facts gained the approval of everyone who was qualified to judge his work' (Alfred Lys Baldry, The Studio, 1908)Fisher studied at the Lambeth School of Art and Royal Academy Schools between 1876 and 1881, winning a gold medal and a travelling scholarship; travelling to Paris, he studied with Jules Bonnaffé. His work In Realms of Fancy was purchased by the Chantrey Bequest in 1898 and later in his life he returned to portrait and figure painting, possibly for financial reasons.Venice in the late 1800s was a popular destination for many artists; alongside Fisher were artists such as John Singer Sargent, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Henry Woods and William Logsdail. The unusual beauty and uniqueness of the city was enchanting and for many artists, Venice was restorative and transformative for their practice. Artists in Venice would often focus either on the working-class Venetians engaged in daily activities, which provided a wealth of subject matter, or the complex play of light on the water, architecture and canal views or narrow streets. In the present lot Fisher has chosen to depict a group of women at work making costumes presumably in preparation for a festival. This subject provides the artist with a perfect opportunity to celebrate the light and shade in the room and the rich texture of the materials. The square brushwork is testament to the influence of Bastein Lepage and his British counterparts, in particular Stanhope Forbes and Albert Chevallier Tayler who had travelled to Venice the year before and had first met Fisher in Paris in 1881.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Sir Walter Westley Russell, RA, RWS, NEAC (British, 1867-1949)The seaside signed 'WRussell' (lower left)oil on canvas93 x 154.4cm (36 5/8 x 60 13/16in).Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate collection, UK.ExhibitedDunedin, New Zealand & South Seas International Exhibition, 1925-6, no. 25.Sir Walter Westley Russell was born at Forest Gate, Essex on 31 May 1867, third son of William Henry Russell, an artist and bookbinder, and his wife Charlotte Emily née Bradley (1838-1904). He studied at the Westminster School of Art under Frederick Brown (1851-1941) but left in about 1891 when he worked as an illustrator and etcher. He was a teacher and then Assistant Professor at the Slade School of Fine Art between 1895–1927, but served in the Royal Engineers between 1916–1919 working on camouflage. A painter of portraits, landscapes and interiors, he began exhibiting at the New English Art Club in 1893 and became a member in 1895. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1898 and had a solo exhibition at Goupil Galleries in 1910. Russell was also a member of the International Society from 1906, the National Portrait Society 1910, and the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours from 1930. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in April 1920, and became a full Academician in February 1926 and was Keeper from 1927-1942. He lived in Chelsea but often worked in Yorkshire, Sussex and Norfolk. An interesting aside is that Russell also took part in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam where forty-nine artists from twelve countries submitted work. The Gold medal was awarded to Isaac Israëls with Laura Knight being awarded the silver medal for Boxing in Camp (The Light Heavy-weights). The present scene is very similar to On the Sands (undated, in the collection of Gallery Oldham) with numerous people relaxing on the beach on a summers day. In the present lot, groups of figures are engaged in conversation or languishing in the warm sun. The composition is punctuated with bold areas of colour which stand out against the pebbles on the beach and lead the viewer into the scene. The work was exhibited at The New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition in Dunedin, New Zealand which ran from 17 November 1925 until 1 May 1926. It was the third such exhibition held in Dunedin, with earlier exhibitions in 1865 and 1889. The 1925 exhibition had over three million visitors.Russell was made a Companion of the Royal Victorian Order in 1931 and knighted on 10 July 1935. He died at 4 Pembroke Road, Kensington, London on 16 April 1949 and a memorial exhibition was held at the Beaux Arts Gallery in 1950.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

SUFFRAGETTE INSIGNIA – DEPUTATIONDeputation ribbon, possibly worn at the Black Friday Demonstration on 18 November 1910, woven in purple and green with the word 'Deputation' on white moire silk, hanging from a green enamel badge with 'Deputation.1910' in gold lettering, maker's mark 'Toye 57 Theobalds/ Rd. London' on reverse, some discolouration and marks, frayed at lower edge, 130 x 50mm. (badge 15 x 64mm.), Toye & Co., 1910Footnotes:The most famous Deputation of 1910 was that of 'Black Friday' on 18 November. In January of that year, Emmeline Pankhurst suspended all militant campaigning in anticipation of the approval of the Conciliation Bill, which would give property-owning women the vote. Asquith, more concerned with pushing through his plans to tax the wealthy, called an election in December, which scuppered any chance of the Conciliation Bill being considered. There were already plans for a peaceful Deputation to the House of Commons on Friday 18th November, but after the announcement of the election, tempers were high on both sides and the protesters were refused entry on Asquith's orders. Efforts to storm the House met with brutal force, and the violent treatment of the women by the police, including sexual assault, is well documented in contemporary accounts, epitomised by the image of Ada Wright thrown to the ground by police (her hunger strike medal sold in these rooms June 2023).Provenance: Given by an unidentified suffragette friend to Minnie Elizabeth Marsh (1899-1986, teacher and headmistress) of Birmingham; thence by descent. Minnie became involved in the suffrage movement around the end of World War I and was a key figure in the first women-only teaching union, where she fought for equal pay for women teachers. She was also involved in the Independent Labour Party and the White Poppies for Peace movement. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

• HUGH CRONYN (BRITISH 1905-1996) Hugh Cronyn (lots 167-174)IntroductionYoung, impressionable and fresh from Toronto where he had studied with the Group of Seven painter Frank Johnston, Cronyn departed Canada with an irrepressible can-do New World outlook. His unpublished memoirs recount his pre-war years: his time at the Arts Students League in New York in 1929; the early 1930s in Paris tutored by Jean Despujols and André Lhote; bicycling across the Alps; and on his arrival in England his immersion into bohemian life in West London. From the mid-thirties he rented various studios by the Thames in Hammersmith and met many of the leading artists and writers of the day. One such was Ivon Hitchens, whose second solo exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery he helped hang. But most influential in his circle of friends was the critic, humourist and politician A P Herbert ('APH') and his wife Gwen, herself a painter and stage-designer of note. At their home at 12 Hammersmith Terrace, Cronyn met the likes of Edward Wadsworth, Mark Gertler, Leon Underwood and John Piper. Ceri Richards lived nearby, as did poets Robert Graves and Laura Riding in St Peter’s Square. He went on painting trips to Dorset with Julian Trevelyan, his neighbour at Durham Wharf, and to the French-Spanish border with Ray Coxon and Edna Ginese at the time of the Spanish Civil War. After the outbreak of the Second World War, Cronyn was commissioned into the Royal Navy. Put in charge of the Naval bomb disposal squad in Bristol dockyards, he was the first Canadian to be awarded the George Medal (GM). In 1942 he married Jean Harris and settled in Suffolk where from 1949-69 he was tutor of painting at Colchester School of Art teaching alongside John Nash, Edward Bawden, Carel Weight and Peter Coker (lot 174). From 1963 the Cronyns began to spend their summers in Quercy in the Lot, first renting a 15th century gatehouse and studio, then a small house, Les Vergers, before buying a dilapidated farmhouse in 1970 in Caufour which they renovated (lot 170). From 1974 the Cronyns spent the winter months in 3 St Peter’s Wharf, next door to Hammersmith Terrace, in one of the artists’ studios overlooking the Thames constructed by Julian Trevelyan. Cronyn's late paintings of the river, which capture the spectrum of colours as the seasons changed, document the river’s moods from winter mists to intense summer sun, and hang in many private collections (lot 172).167HUGH CRONYN (BRITISH 1905-1996)WOODLANDS, QUERCY signed CRONYN lower rightoil on canvas46 x 65cm; 18 x 25 1/2in (unframed)
