Medals and ephemera relating to William Francis Thomas Esq, 1900-1963, former Police Chief Constable of Cardiff, 1954 to 1963. He enlisted to the army in the latter part of the Great War at the age of 17 and the parcel includes his Devon Regiment WW1 pair (named PTE W F Thomas 70871), his 1939-1945 Defence Medal, Police Exemplary Service Medal, Police Distinguished Service medal, Jubilee medal for 1937 and for 1953. Together with the following additional items: 1. Black and white photograph of the then Chief Constable with Prince Philip and other Cardiff leaders 2. City of Cardiff Coronation Visit programme for 1953 3. Copy of 'Police Review' October 1963 with the obituary for Mr Thomas 4. Signed typed Prime Minister's Office thank-you letter and envelope from Prime-Minister Harold MacMillan, 1960 5. A House of Commons headed-paper handwritten letter of sympathy to Mrs Thomas from James Callaghan, 1963 6. Two letters from Lord Mancroft 7. Truncheon Born and educated in Merthyr, the son of the head gardener at Cyfarthfa Castle, Mr Thomas thought first to follow in his father's footsteps, but instead joined Cardiff City Police in 1921. By 1940, he had risen to the rank of Detective Superintendent. During World War II, he was appointed Regional Police Staff Officer in the Wales Civil Defence Region and was awarded the King's Police Medal in recognition of his services, being promoted to the rank of assistant Chief Constable in 1946. He was appointed Chief Constable in 1954 but collapsed and died suddenly while attending a meeting only 12 months before he was due to retire. It was said he was due for a knighthood. He was a past Master of the Cardiff Lodge of the Masons

A group of medals, war diaries and associated WWII memorabilia relating to Captain James Alexander, Highland Light Infantry, joining in the ranks on 3rd September 1939, rising to become the officer in charge of the Glenshee Lodge Winter School preparing soldiers for the invasion of Norway and concluding the War as a Regional Intelligence Officer and Civilian Military Government Officer in Hanover. The medals comprise 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star,Defence and Victory Medals and George VI Territorial Service Medal, together with badges and buttons, diaries covering October 9th 1939 to July 14th 1945, a silk map of France, BAF money, German binoculars, a Great Coat, further uniform and sundries including a layout of an execution block at Buchenwald 'Jede Minute eine Leiche'.
A box containing a silver cigarette case, two Fire Service medals from the 1950's with accompanying letter, a small collection of British and other coinage, together with assorted miscellaneous items to include dressing table mirror and brush, Ronson table lighter, etc CONDITION REPORTS Silver cigarette case with knocks and dents, wear and scuffs. Compacts with various wear and chips. Medallions with wear and scuffs, some knocks and dents to edges. Coins with quite heavy wear. Dressing table items with wear, separating at joins, dents and splits. Sekonda watch heavily scuffed and scratched, and it is not known whether or not it is in working order. Medal isncribed "For Exemplary Fire Service" has inscription to edge "Sub. Offr. James Hope", there is no bar with this medal and there is a piece of ribbon separate in a small cardboard box. The medal with bar which reads "Twenty Years" and "National Fire Brigade Association" is inscribed to side "6359 James Hope". There is a typed letter regarding "Award of Fire Brigade Long Service & Good Conduct Medal" dated 2nd February 1955, and another typed letter relating to "Fire Brigade Long Service & Good Conduct Medal" dated 1st November 1954.
A Victory medal and a Great War medal, both inscribed "4400 PTE G.H. WHIELDON.M.G.C", together with three photographic postcards, one inscribed to back "4400 PTE GH. WHIELDON Machine Gun Corps War medal and Victory medal subsequently of Oakehampton Devon" and a cap badge for the same regiment
