W.YORK.R.); Defence Medal and Coronation Medal 1953. * Chief Stoker William Cadwallader of Dudley, Worcestershire was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal when his ship H.M.S. Saumarez was heavily engaged in the sinking of the German Battle Cruiser "The Scharnhorst" on 26 December 1943. The Mention in Despatches was awarded when his ship H.M.S. Saumarez was engaged in action and the destruction of a Japanese Heavy Cruiser of the Nachi Class (London Gazette 18/9/45). Other ships which William Cadwallader served on included Royal Sovereign; Durban; Vivid and Renown.
