*Charles II, First Milled Coinage, broad, 1662 (issued in March / April), by Thomas Simon, laureate, cuirassed bust left, small horizontal s below, rev., crowned straight-sided shield, florent concordia regna 1662 around, 9.06g (Lessen type G2/3; cf SCBI Schneider 421; N. 2780; S.3337A), flan irregularity at 1-2 o’clock, small dig to right of shield, otherwise good very fine Previously thought to be patterns, research suggests that pieces dated 1662 were issued for a very short period as currency coins, whilst similar specimens dated 1660 and 1661 were made as commemorative medals (see Lessen, M., Simon’s Mill Gold Coins and Medals of Charles II, 1660-2, in BNJ 65 (1995), pp. 151-168). The nominal weight of the coin was 140.49gr. (9.10g) so the present specimen is of good weight in spite of the irregular flan. This would seem to support the view that it was intended as a circulating coin, not a pattern or medal.

Kenneth Clark (1903-1983) is primarily known for his seminal 1969 television series Civilisation. Lord Clark held a variety of important and scholarly positions within the British art establishment including, at the age of 31, the directorship of the National Gallery. He collected widely and after his death Sotheby’s held a sale of part of his collection which demonstrated his eclectic taste in art of all periods, including Renaissance medals and plaquettes. The present piece, often referred to as one of the most beautiful of all German coins, fits in well with Renaissance medallic portraiture in that its inspiration comes from the Italian marriage medal of 1477 attributed to Giovanni Candida, an example of which is coincidentally offered in this sale (see lot 396).
