William Crozier HRHA (1930-2011) WEST CORK, 1994 oil on canvas signed lower left; signed and titled on reverse; inscribed on label on reverse In the year this work was painted Crozier travelled to Greece and the Greek Islands which prompted a series of 'island' paintings which fused classical mythology with the landscape of Roaring Water Bay in West Cork. The same year he was awarded the Douglas Hyde gold medal for painting by the Arts Council of Ireland and exhibited in 'The Colourist Tradition' at City Art Gallery, Edinburgh.The Irish Museum of Modern Art in association with West Cork Arts Centre present a major retrospective of William Crozier's work this year, 'The Edge of Lamdscape' [13 October to 18 April 2018]. Best known for his lyrical landscapes he made close to his home in West Cork from the mid-1980's - such as the present lot - this exhibition will present these familiar works against a backdrop of his early worl inspired by the Existentialist movement and the anxities of the post-war period. 34 by 36in. Frederick Elliott Hart (American, 1943-1999) COUNTERPOINT, 1997 acrylic sculpture; (no. 79 from an edition of 350) signed, dated and numbered on side Frederick Elliott Hart pioneered the use of clear acrylic resin to create cast figurative sculptures and patented a process in which one clear acrylic sculpture was embedded within another. In 1997 Hart presented a unique casting entitled The Cross of the Millennium to Pope John Paul II in a private ceremony at the Vatican.He was a member of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts from 1985 to 1989 and was awarded an honorary degree from the University of South Carolina and received the Henry Hering Award of the National Sculpture Society in 1987 and Presidential Design Excellence Award in 1988. In 2004, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the U.S. government. His important body of work includes the Washington National Cathedral's Creation Sculptures and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial's Three Soldiers. 15 by 22 by 9in. (38.1 by 55.9 by 22.9cm)
* KAY NIXON (BRITISH 1895 - 1988), HORSES PLOUGHING, INDIA mixed media on canvas board, signed 44cm x 75cm Mounted, framed and under glass Label verso: Inscribed with title, artist's name and dated December . Note: Kay Nixon was a talented British animal illustrator noted for an orientalist approach and sharp clarity to the subject, reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints. She lived in India for 25 years, where she illustrated for the Time of India Press, designed 30 nature posters for the Indian State Railways, painted horse portraits and a mural of wild ducks for the Bombay Natural History Museum. After returning to England, she wrote and illustrated numerous children's animal stories and painted animal portraits. Kay's best know illustrations were Brer Rabbit and furry farmyard friends. She was the recipient of many awards and medals and was made an 'Academic of Italy with Gold Medal' in 1980. She exhibited in 1920-26 in Birmingham and Coventry. She studied at the Camden and Birmingham Schools of Art. She illustrated in 40 books, five of which she wrote herself.
