An Unusual WWII and Later Group of Five Medals, comprising Defence Medal, War Medal, Royal Naval GSM with Mine sweeping 1945-51 Bar, General Service Medal with Malaya Clasp and QEII Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal to Captain R.T Cosgrove RASC, lot also includes miniatures, dog tags, warrants, release papers, certificate of service among other items. * Records indicate Reginald Thomas Cosgrove was born on 24th March 1927 in Wellington, Somerset, son of John and Lavinia. He joined The Royal Navy, aged 17 on 28th December 1944 serving until 22nd January 1948 under The Service No KX737480. A short period on Civvy Street saw him convicted of driving a bus without a license in 1949, before enlisting in The Royal Army Service Corps on 3rd January 1950 rising to the Rank of Regimental Quarter Master Sergeant by 1965, he saw service at home, Malaya and Singapore, during his time in Malaya he met and married Ethel Maud Games, a Military nurse in February 1953 He was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Royal Army Service Corps on 4th January 1965, making the rank of Captian by 1968. He died while still commissioned on 28th July 1970 at The Military Hospital, Westminster.

He made his first-class debut for Leicestershire in 1952 and made further appearances over the next two seasons. He returned to Grace Road as Assistant Groundsman in 1970, taking over as Head Groundsman in 1973, he retired in 1997, the year following Liecestershire's second County Championship. According to Wisden his groundsman's shed remained a refuge for players 'in need of a chat.' The scorer's sheet noted above is significant as this was the match in which Brian Lara recorded the world record score of 501.

DCLI - Military Cross (GVR); British War and Victory medals (Lieut); Defence medal and 1939-45 War medal, mounted as worn - "For conspicious gallantry and devotion to duty while in command of a patrol. Whilst engaged in surrounding an enemy post he was attacked on both flanks by superior numbers of enemy Infantry and Cavalry but he succeeded in extracting his patrol and driving off the enemy with considerable loss. He also repulsed a second enemy attack while he was withdrawing. He showed splendid courage and skill in a critical situation." with copy research

Durand, company stamp to the underside of the frieze. 49cm wideFootnote: Gervais Durand exhibited in the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris and was awarded a medal for his exhibits. An exhibition report stated that 'Mr. Durand, was skillful and modest. Winning a silver medal for his first foray in exhibiting his work. His work seems to be mainly based on classical 18th century pieces but given his own flare and crafsmanship.Condition report: An old break to one of the legs at the point of intersection with the under tier with signs of rubbery glue repair one leg.Signs of old repairs and maybe a replacement lower section of the leg from below under tier but shape and construction in keeping
JAMES KAY RSA RSW (SCOTTISH 1858 - 1942), LOCH LONG, AUTUMN oil on board, signed; titled on label verso 51cm x 61cm (approximately 20 x 24 inches) Framed (original) Label verso: T & R Annan & Sons, Glasgow. Note 1: In 1909 James Kay set up home in a house called "Crimea" at Portincaple on the banks of Loch Long and he was to live there until his death 33 years later. This painting is of a view he would have known very well and is probably the view from his home, or very close by. Note 2: Like so many of the other distinguished West of Scotland painters of that era, James Kay was a student at Glasgow School of Art. He also studied closely from nature, and developed early a distinct and colourful method of his own but influenced by the emergence of Impressionism in the 1880s.. He shared studios at first with two other young artists, James Stuart Park and David Gauld in Glasgow. He is not considered to be one of the ‘Glasgow Boys’, although he was friendly with many of them, especially Guthrie, George Henry, and E.A.Walton. Kay worked in a distinctive style and he achieved swift and considerable success both at home and abroad which in turn gained him the widespread respect and admiration of his peers. His first picture in the Royal Academy was 'Towed into Harbour on the Clyde', hung in 1889 and bought by a prominent English collector, and his first in the Paris Salon was in 1894. From then on he had works on display in most of the important exhibitions in Britain, Europe and America every year. In 1903 his canvas, ‘Toil and Grime’, a picture of shipping at the mouth of the River Kelvin, was awarded the silver medal and diploma of the Société des Amis des Arts at Rouen in France. The same year his ‘River of the North’, a winter scene in Glasgow’s busy harbour, gained the highest honour a foreign artist can receive at the hands of the Salon jury and of France when it was awarded a gold medal, and was purchased for The Luxembourg Collection. In 1906, he won the gold medal and diploma at the 37th Exposition Municipale des Beaux Arts de Rouen, where his picture ‘Winter’ was purchased for the Rouen Municipal Collection. The following year his ‘Launch of the Lusitania’ in the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts was bought by the Corporation of Glasgow for the municipal collection. His subjects were wider than just the Clyde and shipping. He painted Glasgow city scenes and some of the Thames, and still farther afield, in pictures like ‘The Armada’ and ‘The Revenge’ which embody the sea romance of Elizabethan days, and in France, where he spent a lot of time, and Holland. 'Clyde Nocturne', a study of the Broomielaw (Glasgow), hangs in the National Gallery in Wellington, New Zealand. The Royal Scottish Academy hung over eighty of his paintings and he also exhibited prolific numbers at the Royal Glasgow Institute and at Glasgow Art Club. UK public collections include Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Aberdeen, Dundee, Paisley, Leeds, Bradford, Newport, The City Art Centre (Edinburgh), the National Trust for Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy.
