Pasmore R.N. 1939-45, Atlantic and Africa Stars privately named to Capt (S) D.H. Pasmore R.N. Defence and War Medals similarly privately named and 1937 George VI Coronation Medal. All mounted as worn with accompanying Miniatures and a selection of ribbons. Paymaster Commander Dennis Hathaway Pasmore was awarded his OBE. whilst serving aboard HMS Orlando, in the 1946 New year's Honours List. He is recorded as a clerk aboard H.M.S. Hyacinth at the Cape of Good Hope prior to the First World War with seniority from the 11th February 1913. Born c.1892 to Henry and Ellen Passmore of Wombourn, Surrey, Dennis was the second of five children. A group of eight comprising OBE on second type military ribbon, 1914-15 Star named to 1319 Sjt A B Pasmore 2nd Co Of Lond Y. War Medal and Victory Medals named to Lieut A.B. Pasmore, Second World War Defence and War Medals privately named to Lt Col A.B. Pasmore Q.R.R. 1935 Jubilee Medal privately named to Lt. Col (BT/COL) A.B. Pasmore R.A. (T.A.) and a George V Territorial Decoration named to Major A.B. Pasmore R.A. T.A. 2.8.30. Mounted court style as worn with accompanying miniatures and OBE Royal Mint case of issue. Archibald Besley Pasmore, having been a Cadet at Dulwich College, attested for four years service in the Territorial Forces in February 1910, at this time he was 21 years old, working as an articled clerk for his Father's firm of Solicitors Hicklin, Washington and Pasmore. He initially served with the 2nd County of London Yeomanry with number 1319. During the First World War he embarked from Southampton traveling to Egypt from the 11th of September 1914 until the 13th August 1915, being admitted to Citadel Hospital in Cairo with Dysentery in September of 1915. He is recorded with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force until 11th February 1916, and home aboard 'Arcadian' for ten days from the 12th February 1916. Once commissioned he served with the Royal Field Artillery. His Medal Index Card gives an address of Larkbears, 15 Hillbury Road, Tooting Common SW17. Later he served with a Regular Army Emergency Commission with the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment with seniority from the 1st November 1941, Lieutenant Colonel (Class 2) from 29th July 1945. Archibald was born in 1899, the third son of Leonard and Emily Pasmore of 15 Hillbury Road, Upper Tooting, a twelve room house with two servants. His sisters nursing medals to Majorie Besley, Dorothy Besley and Joan Besley Pasmore are included in this auction as lot 620. He died on the 26th January 1966 at the General Hospital in Yeovil. Vallance R.A.C. Mounted as worn. 2nd Lieutenant from August 1938, Captain from 11th October 1946, later listed on the Reserve with the Royal Tank Regiment Captain Vallance was a casualty during the Second World War when he was wounded on the 11th May 1943 whilst serving with the 40th Battalion of the Royal Tank Regiment in Tunisia. *CR Good condition as worn with faded and slightly grubby ribbons.
A Second World War and later group of five comprising 1939-45 and Africa Star with 1st Army bar, Defence and War Medal with Mentioned in Despatches Oak leaf and Africa Medal with Kenya clasp named to Major R.T. Elliot Kenya Regt. Mounted court style for display. With two VI Commando shoulder titles and 's aint Louis' and US flag patches with a further shoulder title to the reverse of the frame, a photograph of the recipient in uniform, a First World War compass and the recipient's Fariburn Sykes second pattern fighting knife in leather scabbard. Also Kenya National Park and Samburu Game Reserve car badges and a copy of his obituary. Rodney Thomas Elliott was born into a military family in 1921. Following education at Ampelforth he took a Regular Army Emergency Commission with his Father's regiment and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry from 29th March 1941. Promoted to War Substantive Lieutenant on the 19th September 1942 and Temporary Captain from 15th February 1944. Transferring to 6 Commando his obituary tells of his time with this battalion sized British Army Commando unit formed in July of 1940: 'He recalled knowing the landing was real when they were handed raw carrots to eat during the sea journey towards North Africa. On November 8th 1942, wearing US patches on their shoulders to confuse the enemy, he landed near Algiers. As they stepped off the landing craft his senior officer disappeared under the waves, weighed down by his kit and was never seen again. Elliott, a lieutenant, now took charge. The enemy was engaged immediately and his Commando knife saw close quarter action within minutes of landing. The next few months saw constant action and he was mentioned in dispatches. A few months on, he set off a land mine with a trip wire which cut short his combat career. The resulting injuries relegated him to base training duties with his parent regiment'. Indeed records confirm that he was reported as wounded on the 7th April 1943 whilst fighting in North Africa. Post War service saw his first encounter with the role of conservationist in the forests of Germany where one of his duties was to bring to an end the rampant poaching by bored US and British soldiers. Following the war he became a soldier-settler in Kenya from 1947 where he worked as a regular game warden. Amongst other highlights he accompanied the young Princess Elizabeth and Duke of Edinburgh on their visit to Kenya spending her last day as a Princess with her inspecting elephants. Enrolled in the Kenyan Police Force at the outbreak of the Mau Mau rebellion his skills were ideally suited to teaching soldiers the arts of bush craft and tracking, later remembered by General Frank Kitson as 'one of the finest soldiers I ever knew'. Following the Mau Mau conflict he became Game Warden of Maralal District where he worked with many well known conservationists including George and Joy Adamson who established the Born Free foundation. He once came close to shooting Elsa the Lion as he felt she was too dangerous to have at close quarters, he was left in no doubt of seriousness of the Adamson's commitment to the Lion's when Joy promised to shoot Elliott if he shot Elsa. Known by all as The Major, Elliott had a reputation as a fierce enforcer of game law allied with support for the local communities and animals under his care. Playing a significant role in anti-poaching wars in Kenya's Tsavo Parks his many contacts with the enemy were unreported and his influence on the conflict unrecorded. Following independence Elliott made few friends amongst the local authorities, prosecuting senior police and military personnel who poached 'enthusiastically'. Later, when moved to the post of Divisional Warden at Nyeri to take him away from such controversy he continued with his determined work exposing the Department's own staff as some of the worst poachers. He spent the rest of his working life attempting to end poaching and corruption, as well as introducing conservation measures that were often widely copied. From 1978 as a Superintendent of Police he was tasked with ending the endemic corruption in the government's conservation services. After less than a year in post he had created chaos in government ranks with every one of the forty wardens he investigated from the staff of seventy being guilty of some crime. Elliott's was a fascinating life which encompassed active combat with the Commandos in North Africa during the Second World War and life in colonial and post colonial Kenya attempting to reduce corruption and protect the wildlife that he was responsible for, truly a life of it's time in which 'The Major' attempted to uphold the rule of law in all he encountered. Provenance: A direct descendant of the recipient. *CR Note only one T on Eliott on the Africa Medal. Medals nicely remounted, other items showing expected surface marks and wear, elastic to scabbard stretched.

Stephen Douglas John De Hochepied Larpent, born Newcastle-upon-Tyne 6th march 1940, died 6th May 1986 in Weymouth. He is buried in All Saints Churchyard in Piddletrenthide, Dorset, his headstone has a Naval fouled anchor on a cross and is inscribed 'Commander Royal Navy Allied Forces Southern Europe. *CR As issued.

A Boy Scouts Association Gallantry Cross, 2nd Class, 2nd issue in silver 'For Gallantry', reverse marked for Collins London, and hallmarked for Birmingham 1926, on blue ribbon with top suspension bar. The award was published in The Scouter for December 1927, p.416 'G. Boyd, Scout of the 3rd Marylebone Troop. For his gallantry in rescuing a boy from drowning in the sea at Sidmouth, South Devon,on August 16th 1927. A newspaper cutting adds to the story 'The gallant act of Scout Gerald Boyd .... in rescuing another boy scout named Banks from drowning in the sea at Sidmouth is to be suitably rewarded. Boyd is the twelve year old son of Dr Ezekiel Boyd of Seymour-place, Bryanston Square, and is on e of the most popular members of his troop.' ... 'The brave act which is to be thus honoured, was performed last August while Scout Boyd and other members of the Troop were enjoying a holiday at Sidmouth. Boyd was walking along the sea front when he heard a call and saw his comrade, Banks, about two years younger than himself, struggling in the water. ...Boyd saw him when he was 30 or 40 feet out, and realising the situation at once, he jumped eight or ten feet into the water, and by a gallant effort soon brought Banks to the water's edge. ... Three cheers for scout Gerald Boyd'.With original accompanying certificate signed by the Chief Scout, rolled in original postal tube, two press photographs of Boyd being held aloft by friends and school mates from St Marylebone Grammar School, each 20 x 20.5cm. A photograph of Boyd walking alongside Lord Baden Powell at the presentation ceremony at the People's Palace in East London. A Royal Life Saving Society award named to G.G. Boyd, 1931 and a swimming medal similarly named, 1926 and a third for being 'Diving Champion' in 1931. Also his Roamer wristwatch and an Africa Star medal ribbon.The family suggest that the watch battle-worn by their father, when an officer (Captain - then Major) in the 2nd Royal Gloucestershire Hussars and thence (when the regimental numbers were reduced by battle losses at the Battle of Gazala in North Africa to only 5 men of whom, needless to say, he was one) in the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry.ConditionMedal on frayed ribbon. Photographs with signs of handling and dents and slight tears to edges, scroll tightly rolled and with small splits to edges. Watch appears to work but is no way quaranteed.

* Elton VC (Frederick Cockayne, 1832-1888). Lieutenant Colonel, English recipient of the Victoria Cross. Portrait of Major Elton, Stirling, 1860, albumen print, full length, seated with pillbox hat and cane, his dog ‘Turk’ seated beside him, some spotting, 114 x 152 mm, corners clipped, pasted onto a contemporary paper album leaf with ink caption details neatly written below, identifying his regiment as ‘22nd Depot Battalion’QTY: (1)NOTE:Elton was 22 years old, and a Brevet Major in the 55th Regiment of Foot, during the Crimean War when the deed took place for which he was awarded the VC: ‘On 29 March 1855 at Sebastopol, the Crimea, Major Elton, with a small number of men, drove off a party of Russians who were destroying one of the new detached works, taking one prisoner himself. On 7 June he was the first to lead his men from the trenches. On 4 August he was in command of a working party in the advanced trenches in front of the Quarries, encouraging his men to work under very heavy fire and even used a pick and shovel himself to set an example’ (The London Gazette, 24 February 1857. p. 660).Elton's Victoria Cross is displayed at the King's Own Royal Border Regiment & Border Regiment Museum in Carlisle Castle, Cumbria, together with the remainder of his group including an engraved copy of his Crimea medal. His original, regimentally impressed, Crimea medal has appeared on various occasions over the years at different auction houses and is believed to be currently held in Australia. Elton also received the French Legion d'Honneur and the Turkish Order of Medjidie.
* Wellesley (Arthur, 1769-1852). 1st Duke of Wellington, Prime Minister, 1828-30, 1834. Autograph Letter Signed, ‘Wellington’, London, 25 January 1821, to Colonel Sir Robert Hill discussing at length the various appointments in the Royal Horse Guards, including Mr. Gilpin as Clothier, and a misunderstanding which subsequently led to Gilpin’s suspension. Wellington then comments on the appointment of the Adjutant as Paymaster: ‘Considering every thing I should prefer a separate person for paymaster …’, 6 pages with added manuscript note, ‘His Grace the Duke of Wellingtons Sanction to the appointment of the adj. being adj & paymaster to the Royal Horse Guards’, some dust-soiling, 8voQTY: (1)NOTE:Colonel Sir Robert Hill commanded the Royal Horse Guards (the Blues) during the Peninsular War. He led a brigade of cavalry at the 1813 Battle of Vitoria, and for this received the Army Gold Medal. At Waterloo, Hill, while commanding the Blues, was wounded when a musket ball entered his right shoulder. Despite the injury Hill remained on the battlefield until close to the completion of the action.
Nils Liedhom Sweden A C Milan football legends signed 1958 World Cup cover display. Il Barone (The Baron), as he is affectionately known in Italy, was renowned for being part of the Swedish Gre-No-Li trio of strikers along with Gunnar Gren and Gunnar Nordahl at A.C. Milan and the Sweden national team, with which he achieved notable success throughout his career. Liedholm also won the Latin Cup in 1951 and 1956 and was captain of Milan in the 1958 European Cup Final against Real Madrid, losing 3-2 (after extra time). It is said that Real Madrid great Alfredo Di Stefano who, felt despite victory knew it was a match Milan could have won. Having helped Sweden win the gold medal in the 1948 Olympic tournament, Liedholm was the captain of the Sweden national team at the 1958 World Cup, celebrated in his home country. Aged almost 36, he helped Sweden to reach the World Cup final, where the team lost out to a Brazil side that included Didi and 17-year-old Pelé. Liedholm scored the opening goal of the final, which makes him the oldest player to score in a World Cup Final; however, Brazil came back and won the match 5-2. Good condition. After Herbert James Draper, British 1863-1920- A Water Baby; photogravure printed in colours on paper, tondo, signed 'HERBERT DRAPER' (within the plate, lower left), diameter 50.9 cm. Provenance: with Edward L. Airey & Son, Blackburn. Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is a photogravure after Draper's painting, which is held in the Manchester Art Gallery [no.1900.12]. Draper studied under Jules-Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911) and Gustave Boulanger (1824-1888) at the Académie Julien, having won a travelling scholarship to Paris in 1888. Both artists had a significant influence on Draper's work, most evident in his consistent return to classical and allegorical scenes. 'A Water Baby' illustrates Draper's preoccupation with mythological themes, and is one of his many works which return to the subject of the nymph, who, in the present picture, opens a large oyster shell to find a baby curled up inside. Draper's work was popular amongst contemporaries, with his 'Lament for Icarus' winning the gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, the same year in which the original 'A Water Baby' was purchased by Manchester Art Gallery.
