Dated 1813 AD. From the James Mudie series, number 11, struck 1820, by Webb and Brenet. Obv: profile bust with FIELD MARSHALL F DUKE OF YORK. Rev: colours ceremony with Queen Charlotte and PRESENTATION OF COLOURS BY HER MAJESTY AUGUST 1813 legend with facade of Academy and 1802 to exergue. 38.39 grams, 41mm. BCM 1035 (see also 1136 for more details); BHM I, 769 (see also 1057"). This series of James Mudie medals, commemorating British military and naval victories, comprised a set of 40 which were struck at the Edward Thomason works, Birmingham and offered by subscription as sets or individually in silver, bronze and white metal; this medal was issued at a price of half a guinea. Good very fine. Scarce.

Dated 1896 AD. By N. Lytras and W. Pittner, Austria. Obv: seated Nike holding laurel wreath over phoenix emerging from flames, Acropolis in background, with ?????????? ?????? (Olympic Games) to right and ?????? (Athens) below. Rev: ??????? ?????????? ?????? ??????? (International Olympic Games Athens) legend and date in five lines, within wreath. 58.87 grams, 50mm. See Gad. 2. The 1896 Olympic Games, the first full Games of the modern era, opened in Athens on 6 April following the congress organised by Baron Pierre de Coubertin and the formation of the International Olympic Committee; some 80,000 spectators watched the opening ceremony and sports including athletics, cycling, gymnastics, swimming, shooting, tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, fencing and sailing, totalling forty-three events with winners receiving an olive branch, certificate and a silver medal and the runners-up receiving the olive branch, certificate and a copper medal (which was also given to all participants and was available to the public attending; it is believed that 20,000 were struck"). Although recorded as representing their country, athletes (strictly amateurs) often made their own travel and accommodation arrangements with the full modern concept of national teams, selected and organised by each nation, not being universal until the Games of 1906. [No Reserve] Very fine/good very fine; weakly struck to obverse. Scarce.

Dated 1789, made 19th century AD. Obv: profile bust with date and small letter 'D' (for Denver mint?) below and GEORGE WASHINGTON PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES legend. Rev: crossed axe and pipe over clasped hands with PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP legend; pierced and with loop for suspension. 18.18 grams, 34mm Property of an Essex, UK collector; acquired on the UK art market, 1980-1990. The peace medals are famous for those examples presented to Native American chiefs in the 18th-19th century period; the general design, with a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, has continued in use until the present day with the Peace Medal of the Third World awarded by the United Nations; the Denver mint has produced recent reproductions of this medal, at 1 1/2 and struck in bronze, this example appears to have considerable age and further research might discover the origin. F. Coles. S. Divn.), engraved, Coronation (Police) Medal 1902, Metropolitan Police, bronze (P.C. F. Coles. S. Div.), engraved, and Coronation (Police) Medal 1911, Metropolitan Police (P.C. F. Coles.), engraved; also a Northamptonshire Regiment bi-metallic cap badge; and an Army Air Corps white metal cap badge. Note: R/13416 Rifleman A.E. Coles, 8th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, the son of Fred and Annie Coles of Enmore, Bridgwater (Somerset), died on 16th June 1916, at the age of 20. He is buried with honour at Maroeuil British Cemetery.

A GREAT WAR TRIO OF MEDALS TO PRIVATE W.R. WYLLIE, (QUEEN'S OWN) ROYAL WEST KENT REGIMENT comprising the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal 1914-20 and Victory Medal (all S-465. Pte. W.R. Wyllie. R.W. Kent. R.), officially impressed, bar mounted for wearing; together with research suggesting that William Ralston Wyllie (1868-1949) had previously served with the 5th Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers before re-enlisting on 3rd September 1914, at the age of 46 (he claimed to be 44). Then living at Bromley he was placed into the 8th Battalion of the Royal West Kent Regiment and landed at Boulogne in August 1915. He was sentenced to forty-two days field punishment for being drunk and disorderly in April 1917, and in October of that year he reported sick and was diagnosed with myalgia and neurosis. This led to him being sent back to Britain and on 31st May 1918 he was medically discharged. During his period of active overseas service he is likely to have fought with his Battalion at the Battles of Loos, 1915; Delville Wood, 1916; Vimy Ridge (Arras offensive), 1917; Pilkem Ridge, 1917; and Langemarck, 1917.

Note: 18879 Private Montague Groves, 1st Bn Dorsetshire Regiment, the son of Thomas William and Caroline Groves, of Chetnole, Sherborne, Dorset, died on 29th September 1918, at the age of 20. He is buried with honour at Cerisy-Gailly Military Cemetery.

BOYD, ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE comprising the 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, with single clasp 'North Africa 1942-43', Pacific Star, Italy Star, and War Medal 1939-45, unnamed as issued, bar mounted for wearing, with offical medal entitlement slip; together with the accompanying medal ribbon strips. Note (1): 1290787 Sergeant George Patrick Boyd, 61 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, the son of George and Edith Elizabeth Boyd of Sandwich, Kent, was killed in action on the 15th October 1944, aged 24 years. He is buried with honour at the Hanover War Cemetery. Sgt Boyd, a radio operator on Lancaster ME595, lost his life during a raid on Brunswick. His plane was hit by an anti-aircraft barrage and caught fire, forcing the seven man crew to bale out. Sergeant Boyd, wounded by flak, snagged his parachute as he made his way towards the exit door, causing it to partially unpack. With the plane losing height Sgt Boyd had no time to repack the parachute and, when he jumped to avoid the flames, it failed to deploy correctly and he fell to his death. Note (2): The medals of Sgt Boyd's brother constitute the following lot.
