Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1901-1979), Waxwings, gouache, 20.5 x 18.5cm.; 8 x 7.25in, together with a letter of authentification from the sister of the artist - Dorothy Downes. * Tunnicliffe`s pictures are anatomically immaculate yet often especially the early etchings have great atmosphere. He won a scholarship to Macclesfield School of Art; then Manchester School of Art 1915-21 preceding a Royal Exhibition Scholarship to the Royal College of Art 1921. His work was bought by the British Museum Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston and by overseas collections. He won the gold medal of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds 1975. Tunnicliffe was a hugely prolific illustrator of books about the country and had a long association with Henry Williamson author of Tarka the Otter 1932. Tunnicliffe`s own publications included My Country Book 1942; Mereside Chronicle 1948 and A Sketchbook of Birds 1979.

A scarce WWI (Q Ship) casualty pair awarded to J21319 ordinary seaman DJ Jones of The Royal Navy comprising 1914/15 star and 1914-18 Great War medal. Ordinary seaman Jones served on board HMS Warner (Q 27) and was killed in action on the 13th March 1917, when it was sunk by U 38 off the West coast of Ireland, he was commemorated on the Royal Naval memorial at Plymouth, grave memorial reference 21, complete with original packets of issue. Q Ships also known a Q Boats were decoy vessels which were heavily armed merchant ships with concealed weaponry, the idea was to lure submarines into making surface attacks where the Q Ships would then open fire on them and sink the U Boat. This lot is accompanied by a quantity of research regarding this medal group. Also in this lot a WWI medal group awarded to 25811 Private L Morgan of the Welsh Regiment comprising 1914-18 war medal and War for Civilisation medal, also a George VI general service medal with bar for Palestine 1945-48 awarded to 14331583 Lance Corporal LDJ Morgan of the Royal Signals in original box of issue, a box of WWII medals comprising 1939 Star, France and Germany Star, 1939-45 medal and Defence medal all in original packets of issue. Also in this lot a quantity of cap badges comprising Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (2), another cap badge for the Royal Highlanders, a quantity of buttons and further cap badges including Royal Marines etc, a cased Normandy medal, a George V silver services rendered badge, two cased Cheshire Regiment centenary medals awarded in 1989 (reputably only 1000 of these medals were produced and handed out at Chester Race Course). Also a quantity of cigarette cards relating to butterflies, shipping, coin machines, a brass framed brooch containing colour photographs of two gentlemen in Victorian garb and a pair of brass nut crackers. An interesting and possibly very unique Boer War and World War I non "casualty" medal group awarded to a John William Pincock comprising a Queen`s South Africa medal named to 751 Trooper J W Pincock of the Second Kitchener`s Scouts with bars for Transvaal, Orange Free State, Cape Colony, John Pincock is recorded as having enlisted in the Kitchener`s Fighting Scouts at Cape Town on 29th July 1901 and was discharged on 10th February 1902 on the units disbandment, also in this lot is a World War I medal group awarded to 92910 Private J W Pincock of the 3/4 Canadian Infantry comprising 1914/15 Star, a 1914-1918 British war medal where John Pincock is now acting Sergeant and a Great War for Civilisation medal (please note the serial numbers on the Great War medal for Civilisation medal are 22910), also in this lot is a Death Plaque awarded to John William Pincock and a silver Canadian Memorial Cross inscribed on the reverse 22910 Sergeant J W Pincock. According to the vendor who is a relative Sergeant Pincock survived the war and research could find no mention on casualties regarding a Sergeant Pincock, also included in this lot is a copy of an e-mail sent by the Commonwealth War Graves confirming no record of a death to Sergeant Pincock. Also in this lot is a World War I medal group awarded to 30858 Private H Godbert of the East Lancashire Regiment comprising 1914-1918 British War medal and Great War for Civilisation medal, two silver French brooches, a gilt enamel Canadian war service badge, an RAF badge, Queen Victoria 1887 Jubilee badge and a small white metal Red Cross penny a week fund badge, six 1950`s ration books and an old box, etc, complete with some research including a copy of a photograph of William Pincock in his police uniform.
