Unique and Important Royal Navy HMS Prince “Trafalgar” Naval General Service Medal with Two Clasps.Awarded to “JAMES WILLS.” Bearing the two clasps “Trafalgar”, “6 May Boat Service 1814”. This is the unique issue of the Naval General Service Medal awarded to Landsman James Wills confirmed as receiving the NGS with two clasps. On the 21st October 1805 as part of “Nelson’s” Fleet he was serving onboard the 98 Gun second rate HMS Prince, described by one Captain having the sailing quality of a Haystack” It was probably for this reason that on the 21st October, she was passed by her whole division as it took two hours to cover the two to three miles to engage the enemy, by this time most of the enemy fleet was in British hands, but she was able to engage the Spanish Flagship Principe de Asturias and aided in the destruction of the Achille. It was in the following days that she came into her own, helping the damaged ships of the fleet. On the 3rd May 1814 he is confirmed as serving onboard HMS Princess Charlotte, which had been built in Canada, she was commissioned under Captain Mulcaster on 5 May 1814 at Oswego. Joining Commodore Yeo's Lake Ontario squadron she departed Kingston, transporting troops for an attack on Fort Oswego. It was decided that Captain Mulcaster would lead a naval detachment of 200 men ashore to assault the fort from its western flank, it appears that Wills joined this expedition. Princess Charlotte would remain offshore, carrying reserves for the battle. At 06:00 on 6 May, the battle began, Mulcaster had moved Princess Charlotte into position where the frigate could bombard the fort with her 24-pounder long guns. The frigate opened fire at 13:00 and under the naval bombardment, the landing began. Mulcaster's men stormed the main shore battery. During the assault, Mulcaster was severely injured when he was shot through the leg. Lieutenant John Scott of Princess Charlotte took over command of the attack on the western flank. Fort Oswego was captured and the reserves aboard Princess Charlotte were landed to secure the perimeter around the fort and town. Supplies and goods were taken and the squadron returned to Kingston on 8 May. This is an unpublished clasp and unique believed to be the only known example. This medal formed part of the Lord Cheylesmore’s collection sold in 1930 and is also recorded as being sold at Sotheby’s in 1990.
