As soon as the patrol was across, it came under heavy fire and in attempting to close with the enemy the patrol commander was killed. By this time further enemy posts had opened fire, including MG's, and immediately taking command of his patrol, Sgt Leonard organised its withdrawal to the river bank. In order to do this he first posted his men as best he could to hold the enemy, then he himself ran back to the river bank and called for covering fire. Returning to his patrol he was the whole time under heavy fire from about 10 MG's which were firing in all directions. He succeeded in withdrawing his patrol to the river with one casualty, a man severely wounded, who was carried by the Sgt himself. Owing to the strength of the current, it was impossible to return by boat, and a lifeline had to be formed to get the patrol back. Sgt Leonard remained on the enemy bank with one man, giving covering fire whilst the remainder of the patrol crossed the river, and when all his men were safely across, he picked up the wounded man and, assisted by the life line, passed safely across. He was slightly wounded and dropping with fatigue but absolutely refused to be evacuated. As a result of this patrol, valuable information concerning the enemy's defences was obtained. Sgt Leonard's gallantry and powers of leadership were beyond praise, and his extraordinary display of courage, determination and endurance resulted in the extrication of his patrol from an extremely difficult situation.
