A 9 inch radius vernier sextant by Henry Hughes & Co London:, the three circle black crackle finish frame with silvered arc calibrated to 130 degrees, signed as per title with 'Husun' label to arm, mirrors, shades and sighting scope, together with accessories in a fitted mahogany case with calibration certificated dated 6/4/43. *Notes- This instrument belonged to Captain S W Keay OBE., also a recipient of the Lloyds medal for bravery. Captain S W Keay was the Captain and commander of the RMS Empress
Of HMS Renown and WWI interest- an 18ct gold half hunter awarded to James Glasson Williams RN, together with a framed WWI and WWII medal group:, the half hunter inscribed to dust case 'To J G Williams in grateful remembrance of 30th November 1897 from Captain and Mrs Riddel HMS Renown Bermuda' the WWI group of four to '145077 J G Williams' 1914-15 Star, War Medal, Victory Medal and RN LSGC, the WWII group to 'JX 132951 P R Williams RN' ( son of J G Williams) also together with P R Williams Service certificate and copies of related documents and ephemera. *Notes- Captain Daniel McNabb Riddel was captain of HMS Renown and was rescued by J G Williams when he fell overboard whilst in Bermuda in 1897.
1815 Waterloo Medal, Trooper John Hughes, 12th Prince Of Wales Light Dragoons. John Hughes Served With The 12th Light Dragoons At Salamanca And Victoria During The Peninsular Wars. Hughes Later Served Under Lord Wellington At The Battle Of Waterloo, Where The 12th Lead The Charge Of Vandeleur's Cavalry Brigade. Nearly A Third Of The Men Of The 12th Became Casualties. Hughes And His Captain, Edwyn Sandys, Were Among The Wounded. Sandys Succumbed To His Injuries Shortly After The Battle. The Colonel Of The 12th, Frederick Ponsonby, Was Also Grievously Wounded But Survived. Hughes Was Pensioned In September 1827.
The Service Aeronautique. Two remarkable small early 20th century photograph albums, showing famous pilots and incidents during the Great War. Most of the photographs are annotated in ink and some signed. The name and address on the inner cover: Maillan, 35 Rue Jacquard. Maillan, in pilots uniform, features in several of the photographs which are taken mostly between 1914 to 1917 in France at Escadrilles (squadrons) N3, N12, N49, N81, N67, the most famous of these being N3 'The Storks' who were one of the most decorated aviation units of WWI. The photographs show the pilots at work and rest, the aeroplanes are mostly SPADs and Nieuports but there are also images of captured German Albatrosses. Other interesting photographs of note include medal investures, (Legion d'honneur, N81) various plane wreckages and some official arial photographs annotated with their escadrille, pilots and observers names. The most famous French WWI flying aces featured in the albums include: Yves Barbaza, Marcel Hugues, Georges Flachaire and Marcel Viallet who all were recipients of the Légion d'honneur, the Médaille militaire and the Croix de Guerre . Two also received the British Military Cross. Between them they shared over 30 airborne victories (the downing of an enemy aircraft). Two fascinating historical documents. (See illustration)
Winston Churchill medal by Lowzentile - £30 to £50 Medal depicting Winston Churchill. Cast in multiple numbers. The medallists name “Lowzentile”- can’t find anything out about him. Re-cast 20 years after the war in 1965. Churchill gave 3 speeches in 1945- fight them on the beaches, blood sweat. I.e. This medal is 2nd of speeches (words marked on it). Cast in Bronze, the 1965 issues are in gold.
Royal Antediluvian order of Buffalos medal collection - Many silver, 1 gold - Est £250 to £350 The Royal antediluvian order of the Buffaloes. They are similar to the masons, the masonic order still exists. This organisation was known as the Buffs for short. It was strictly for men. The earliest medal was from 1939. The phrase written says “no man is at all hours wise”. Silver guilt and brass, only one medal is gold. There is also enamelling.

A World War I Military Cross and Military Medal group, to 1541 Acting Captain John Wandrum Cawley 1/4th Royal Berkshire Regiment, together with the 1914-1915 Star, The War Medal 1914-1920, The Victory Medal and The Italian Al Valore medal also World War I medals to 200668 Private R F Cawley Royal Berkshire Regiment comprising:- 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal 1914-1920, The Victory Medal, A World War II Defence Medal (for Home Guard Service) and a Christmas 1914 brass tobacco tin. London Gazette 11.11.1916 - MM 1541 Coy. Q.M.Sjt. J. W. Cawley, R. Berks. R. London Gazette 29.11.1918 (issue 31043) - M.C. His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve of the following award in recognition of gallantry and devotion to duty in the Field. Awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid. Although wounded at the start, he remained at duty and led his company to the assault. He personally killed several of the enemy, and led his men with great dash and courage until again wounded by a bomb. As a result of his fine leadership and careful preparation, his company gained all their objectives.
Indian Mutiny Medal - to Private D(avid) Greig, 90th Light Infantry, Lucknow and Defence of Lucknow clasps, renamed probably as the result of a spelling mistake as he appears as P Gregg on the medal roll. His discharge papers demonstrate the correct spelling. This document indicates his brief promotion to Corporal and his subsequent reduction to Private. (Copies available)
