Attributed to John Lewis Reilly after Stephen Pearce, portrait of 19th century Arctic explorer Sherard Osborn in Naval uniform, wearing medals including the Arctic Medal, oil on board,11" x 15" NOTE this lot has been sent in for sale by the owners of the following lot which bears an inscription verso referring to the sitter Reilly and Pearce HISTORICAL NOTE; SHERARD OSBORN (1822-1875), English admiral and Arctic explorer. Early in his career he saw service in China and the Far East and in the Pacific. In 1850 was appointed to the command of the steam-tender "Pioneer" in the Arctic expedition in search of Franklin under Captain Austin. He performed a famous sledge journey across Prince of Wales Island in 1851. An account of his voyage, "Stray Leaves from an Arctic Journal was published in 1852,. In a new expedition (1852-1854) under Sir Edward Belcher he again took part as commander of the "Pioneer." His career continued into the Crimean War and he maintained an interest in Polar exploration until his death. For his services he received the Polar Medal, the C.B., and the Cross of the Legion of Honour.

A Victorian sculpted white marble bust of a young girl, dated 1849, her head to dexter, her hair parted to the left side, one shoulder loosely draped, inscribed to the reverse BEHNES Sculpt 1849, on a waisted, circular socle, 53cm high. William Behnes was born in London though his early life was spent in Dublin where he studied art at the Dublin Academy. After the family returned to London, Behnes continued his artistic training, studying at the Royal Academy School of Art from 1813. As a painter, he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1815 and won several medals during the ensuing years. In 1819 he won a Society of Arts gold medal for inventing an instrument to assist sculpture work, having by this time begun to practice successfully as a sculptor. In 1837 Behnes was appointed ‘Sculptor in Ordinary’ to Queen Victoria. His pupils included noted sculptors George Frederic Watts, Thomas Woolner and Henry Weekes.

The group is mounted in two "spink" frames with some fading of the ribbons. They also benefit from the inclusion of a large quantity of ephemera. Letters from The London Necropolis Co. Ltd in relation to his grave no. 193694 at Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey; together with a rubbing of his dedication. Copy extracts of letters to his parents from 1881 to circa 1902. Two cabinet photographs of him as a young officer circa 1885, other images circa 1918, two diaries 1882 and 1883, each outlining military and private activities including sea voyages to and from India. A copy of "The 2nd Munster in France" published 1922, here is outlined the Munsters defence at the town of Estreux, holding back the advancing German army, long enough to allow the main body of the British Army to retreat successfully from Mons. A copy of the story of The Munsters at Etreux, published 1918. Various photographs, some copies including him as a baby, toddler and youth; together with one of his grave. Embarkation document. Notification document appointing him to 2nd Lieutenant. Several letters sent to his mother in sympathy of her loss. An unusual and speculative bronze Lusitania medal dated the 5th of May 1915, this medal has an attached bronze lug to one side possibly for medal production or copying(?). The original Lusitania medal was produced by Carl Goetz and was originally dated the 5th of May which was the incorrect date for the sinking of the Lusitania, that being the 7th of May. Britain produced their own medal as a direct copy of this with the correct date, therefore this medal is interesting as it contains the German version of the date 5th of May and may have been used by Britain as a copying tool. This medal originally belonged to someone who was in a British casting business. Also with this lot is a box of assorted coinage including a United States one dollar dated 1972 and other foreign coinage etc together with some research
