Iliados [&] Odysseais [graece], edited by Jacob Moor and George Muirhead, 4 vol., Greek text with Latin dedication, preface and index, half-titles in vol.2 & 4 only, some light spotting, mostly at beginning and ends, 3p2 with short tear to margin repaired, later ink signature of J.E.R.Oldfield to front pastedowns, contemporary calf with borders ruled in blind, spines gilt in compartments with five raised bands and brown roan labels, red edges, a little rubbed and marked with a few scuffs but a handsome copy, [Gaskell 319], folio, Glasgow, Robert & Andrew Foulis, 1756-58.⁂ The magnum opus of the press, for which it was awarded the Silver Medal of the Select Society of Edinburgh in both 1756 and 1757. The Foulis brothers had the Greek font cut by Alexander Wilson, and its setting in the Homer shows it to splendid effect.

He pioneered the theory of distributions, giving a meaning to objects such as the Dirac delta function; René Thom (1923-2002) French Topologist. 1958 Award. Worldwide famous for his work as founder of Catastrophe Theory. Thom states `What limits the authentic, is not fake, it is the insignificant.´; Lars Hörmander (1931-2012) Swedish Mathematician, called "the foremost contributor to the modern theory of linear partial differential equations". 1962 Award. A five lines kind inscription; Stephen Smale (1930- ) American Mathematician. Awarded the Fields Medal in 1966, and Michael Atiyah (1929-2019) British-Lebanese Mathematician specialising in geometry. President of the Royal Society 1990–95) and founding Director of the Isaac Newton Institute 1990–96. 1966 Award. All are boldly signed. The full names of the awarded mathematicians are written in a collector´s hand at the base of the cards. Fields medal Award in 1970; Heisuke Hironaka (1931- ) Japanese Mathematician. Signed also in Japanese. 1970 Award; David Mumford (1937- ) American Mathematician. 1974 Award. Daniel Quillen (1940-2011) American Mathematician. Best known for being the "prime architect" of higher algebraic K-theory. 1978 Award; Pierre René, Viscount Deligne (1944- ) Belgian Mathematician. 1978 award, and Michael Freedman (1951- ) American Mathematician. Awarded a Fields Medal in 1986 for his work on the 4-dimensional generalized Poincaré conjecture. Signed to a 4to page with the printed heading of the University of California, San Diego, Department of Mathematics. THOMSON JOSEPH: (1858-1895) Scottish Explorer & Geologist who played an important part in the 'Scramble for Africa'. A rare A.L.S., Joseph Thomson, two pages, 8vo, York Gate, Regents Park, n.d. ('Monday'), to 'My dear Clodd'. Thomason forwards his correspondent six complimentary tickets (no longer present) 'on the understood condition of course that you will & faithfully act as an effective claque', continuing to explain 'If necessary I shall send you a copy of my paper marked for applause in case you are not quite sure when it should come in, which would be a pity. We know some one who would know exactly the times to applaud - namely after each paragraph and the majority of sentences. She ought to be with you to lead and give the right key note. But you yourself are not wanting in discrimination. Still you know if you are doubtful a claque copy will be at your disposal'. A letter of remarkable content and rare as a result of Thomson's untimely death at the age of 37. An ink annotation in an unidentified hand appears at the base of the second page. VG £200-300     In 1883 Thomson embarked on an expedition for the Royal Geographical Society to explore a route from the eastern coast of Africa to the northern shores of Lake Victoria. He gave an account of his experiences at a meeting of the Society in November 1884 and was awarded their Founder's Gold Medal the following year.

SELOUS FREDERICK: (1851-1917) British Explorer, famous for his exploits in Southeast Africa. A.L.S., F. C. Selous, three pages, 8vo, Worplesdon, Surrey, 7th February 1907, to Mrs. Noble. Selous sends his correspondent a Fellows Ticket (no longer present) for the present session of the Royal Geographical Society and adds 'I believe that this ticket will admit one person to any of the ordinary lectures; but I do not know if it will be of any use for a special meeting', further remarking 'When the date of Capt. Boyd Alexander's lecture has been announced, if you will let me know I will write to the Secretary of the R.G.S. and see if I can get you tickets. He might be able to let me have one or two, but there will probably be a very big crowd and tickets will be difficult to get. I should think that my Fellows Ticket ought to be good for one seat'. VG £100-150   Boyd Alexander (1873-1910) English Lieutenant, Explorer & Ornithologist. In 1908 he was awarded the Royal Geographical Society's Founder's Gold Medal for his 'three years' journey across Africa from the Niger to the Nile'

THOMAS WILKINSON WALLIS. A PAIR OF LATE 19th CENTURY GOTHIC REVIVAL CARVED OAK PICTURE FRAMES of moulded design with carved masked corners, the reverse with the original label for T.W. Wallis, Carver, Gilder. Louth. 47.5cm high, 54cm wide - Thomas Wilkinson Wallis was the greatest woodcarver of Victorian England. Born in impoverished circumstances in Hull, by 1844 he had established his own business in Louth Lincolnshire, and for the 1851 he submitted seven carvings, 'of which ‘Trophy of Spring’ was awarded a medal. It was his most intricate carving, it took him 8 months to complete and was considered to surpass the work of Grinling Gibbons. Wallis also won medals at the 1855 Paris Exhibition and the London Great Exhibition in 1862.' In 1899 – four years before his death – he published his 'Autobiography of Thomas Wilkinson Wallace, Sculptor in Wood, and Extracts from his Sixty Years' Journal

ITEMS RELATING TO LT COL SIR HARRY LLEWELLYN CBE comprising a silver commemorative easel plaque with portrait of 'Foxhunter' and inscribed 'Horse and Hound - 21st July 1953 White City Lt. Col. H M LLewellyn's 'Foxhunter'', a cast-metal medallion inscribed 'Chio Roma 1954', a hardback volume of 'Passports to Life - An Autobiography' and a John Board inkwash painting of Llewellyn in action at an arena. Auctioneer's Note: Sir Harry Llewellyn, 1911-99, 3rd Baronet, was a British equestrian champion, initially riding as a steeplechaser, he finished second in the 1936 Grand National and 4th on the same horse in 1937, before war intervened and in 1948 he and his horse Foxhunter competed at the Olympic Games in London, where they finished 3rd in the team event, claiming the bronze medal. Shortly afterwards they won the King George V Gold Cup at the International Horse Show and again in 1950 and 1953. Sir Harry remains the only rider to score a hat-trick of victories with the same horse in this prestigious competition. However, it was the gold medal they won at the 1952 Olympic Games held in Helsinki, Britain's only gold at the games, that would cement their reputation. Over the next decade, Harry Llewellyn and Foxhunter won 78 international competitions and Harry went on to become active in the administration of British show-jumping. In 1977 he was knighted and succeeded to the Llewellyn Baronetcy after the death of his elder brother. Provenance: by direct family descent
