Two horn snuff boxes, John Obrisset, circa 1712 oval, the first, signed with initials, pressed with a profile portrait of Charles I after the medal by Roettiers, the second with the arms of Sir Francis Drake each 10cm, 4in (2) The subjects on the lids of these two boxes are two of the most popular from Obrisset's oeuvre. The Drake coat of arms, which appears in a number of versions, in particular has been much discussed by P.A.S. Phillips, John Obrisset, London, 1931 and Paula Hardwick, Discovering Horn, Guildford, 1981, among others.
A transfer-printed snuff box, Battersea/Birmingham, circa 1755 rectangular, the lid with the arms of the Anti-Gallican Society, the interior with a profile of George II, in the Antique manner, engraved by Simon-Francois Ravenet, after the medal by John Sigismund Tanner, the sides and base with printed brown shell and diaper motif 8.5cm, 3.25;in Provenance Lord Ilford of Bury, sale, Sotheby's London, 9 June 1975, lot 39 The Anti-Gallican Society was instituted in 1745 in order 'to oppose the insiduous arts of the French Nation', that is, to discourage the importation and consumption of French produce and manufactures. Stephen Theodore Janssen, the owner and founder of the Battersea enamel factory at York House was one of the SocietyÕs Grand Presidents.. Dr Watney, ÔPetitions for Patents É.Õ, E.C.C. Transactions, 1966, cites this box among group A6 of the printed brown diaper and shell type of transfer-printed boxes with Birmingham and Battersea connections. He illustrates the two Anti-Gallican designs, p .86, a and b..
Earl St Vincent’s Reward medal 1800, in silver, diameter 47mm. Obverse bust of St. Vincent left, in naval uniform with legend “Earl St Vincent’s Testimony of Approbation 1800”, reverse: sailor and marine shaking hands within oak wreath with Union flag background, and legend “Loyal and True”. Edge engraved “Samuel*Blight”. Good Very Fine, a little dark staining to obverse, cleaned. Plate 1. Note:These awards were given to crew members of Victory and Ville de Paris who did not take part in the Mutiny in the Mediterranean.
A late Victorian officer’s 1821 pattern sword of The 17th Lancers, faintly curved blade 34½” by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, numbered 38144 (1900) on backstrap, etched with crowned VR cypher, wreath, regimental badge “17 Duke of Cambridge’s Own Lancers” and owner’s name R W V Bruce, within angular scrolled panels, plated scroll pattern bowl guard, wirebound diced composition grips, in its plated scabbard. Good Condition (blade repolished over pitting) Plate 28. Note: Robert William Vesey Bruce was commissioned in 1900, served throughout the Boer War, was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Queen’s medal with 4 clasps. Promoted Captain in 1908, he served in WWI, became Major in 1916 and retired on half pay at the end of the war.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain / England, Charles II, Coronation 1661, Copper Medal, by Thomas Rawlins, crowned bust left wearing Collar of the Garter, signed R below, rev Charles as a shepherd, DIXI CVSTODIAM – 23 APRIL 1661, plain edge, 33mm (MI 474/80). Minor spotting on obverse, otherwise extremely fine and a very rare variety, known only in this metal.
COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain / England, Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), The Capture of Portobello, Pinchbeck Medal, 1739, half-length figure three-quarters left, holding baton, rev six ships in harbour, WITH SIX SHIPS ONLY, 40mm (MI 532/96; Betts 188). Extremely fine and struck with raised rim, one small spot on edge (reverse at 3 o’clock). On November 21st, 1739, Admiral Vernon attacked the ‘Iron Fort’ at Portobello “with six ships only” and after a short resistance it surrendered. The six ships in the action were H.M.S. Burford (flagship), 70 guns, H.M.S. Hampton Court (Commodore Brown's ship), 70 guns, H.M.S. Worcester, 60 guns, H.M.S. Strafford, 60 guns, H.M.S. Princess Louisa, 60 guns, and H.M.S. Norwich, 50 guns. A seventh ship, H.M.S. Sheerness, 20 guns had been deployed to Cartagena as a scout. Washington’s home, Mount Vernon is named after him, Colonel Lawrence Washington had been part of the American Colonial force serving under him. .
COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain / England, Admiral Edward Vernon, The Capture of Fort Chagre, Pinchbeck Medal, 1740, signed J M, half-length figure of Admiral Vernon right, staff in hand, Fort Chagre behind to left, trophies and flag to right, rev six ships enter Porto Bello harbour, 36mm (MI 546/147; Betts 291, illustrated). Good very fine, much original colour remaining, traces of lacquer in and near exergue on reverse, rare. The bombardment of Fort Chagre (now Chagres), at the mouth of the Chagre River in Panama, lasted from March 22nd to the 24th when the garrision surrendered. The ships that engaged in the bombardment were H.M.S. Stafford, H.M.S. Norwich, H.M.S. Falmouth, and H.M.S. Princess Louisa.
COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain / England, Archdeacon Ralph Brideoake (1665-1743), Death, Copper Medal, 1743, by J A Dassier, bust right, rev the Church of St Mary, Southampton, 54mm (MI 572/208). The scarcer variety of the medal, almost very fine, but surface scuffed and with edge knocks. Ralph Brideoake, Archdeacon of Winchester, had been Rector of St Mary’s, Southampton when, in 1722, the church was restored at his own expense. .
