Annie Elizabeth Thornley, MBE. Archive to include MBE medal, plus miniature, in Royal Mint presentation case, together with certificate, dated 1 January 1955. As a young lady, Thornley cycled every day from her home in Stapenhill, Burton upon Trent to Derby where she trained as a nurse. WWI LETTERS FROM THE FRONT. Two letters from WOI George W. Holden of the Leinster Regiment to his cousin Jennie whilst on active service at the Balkan Front in 1917 & in the Middle East in 1918. 1. Two page letter dated 7.2.1917: Written with artillery batteries firing a hundred yards away at 'John Bulgar' whilst acting as Quartermaster in a ruined farmhouse close to the front. Describes how he sleeps on his commissioned rum stores, the weather, his meeting a relative at the front, his receipt of a Meritorious Service Medal & discusses family matters at home etc. 2. Two page letter two 6.8.1918: Mainly discusses family matters but mentions the fighting against the Turks & a visit to the Holy Land. Also included is a later portrait photograph of WOI Holden. Provenance: from the estate of his family. Condition: Letters aged & discoloured, faint but readable.
