Frank Edward Stubbs, 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers (since died of wounds) [in a joint citation with Captain Richard Raymond Willis, Captain (temporary Major) Cuthbert Bromley (since drowned), No. 1293 Serjeant Alfred Richards, No. 2609 Corporal (now Serjeant) John Grimshaw, and No. 1809 Private William Keneally, all 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers]'On the 25th April, 1915, headquarters and three companies of the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, in effecting a landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula to the West of Cape Helles, were met by very deadly fire from hidden machine guns, which caused a great number of casualties. The survivors, however, rushed up to and cut the wire entanglements, notwithstanding the terrific fire from the enemy, and after overcoming supreme difficulties, the cliffs were gained and the position maintained.Amongst the many very gallant officers and men engaged in this most hazardous undertaking, Captains Willis and Bromley, Serjeants Richards and Stubbs, Corporal Grimshaw, and Private Keneally have been selected by their comrades as having performed the most signal acts of bravery and devotion to duty.'1506 Sergeant Frank Edward Stubbs, V.C., born Kennington, London, March 1888; enlisted as a Boy soldier in London and served with the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers in India and during the Great War at Gallipoli, as part of the Lancashire Landing on 'W' beach, 25.4.1915; died of wounds the same day, the only fatal casualty amongst the Battalion's 6 V.C. recipients, and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.Sergeant Stubbs' Victoria Cross was presented to his mother in a private ceremony in the ballroom at Buckingham Palace on the 2nd May 1917, and is now owned by the Regimental Museum.Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium. Queen Victoria, Golden Jubilee 1887, official Gold Medal, by Sir J E Boehm and [reverse] Frederick, Lord Leighton, engraved by L C Wyon, crowned and veiled bust left, rev., the Queen enthroned surrounded by seven figures of the Arts and Industries of Britain, 87.39g, 58mm (BHM 3219; Eimer 1733; Wollaston 39), only 944 specimens struck, in red leather case of issue. Minor handling and scuff marks, extremely fine.
Two 19th century Royal Academy of Music bronze medals awarded in 1896 for Sight Singing to Elsie M Southgate and for Violin in 1895 in John Pinches leather cases together with a WEMFA bronze medal decorated with a Pigeon by J A Restall (uncased), a bronze Sports medal inscribed 'Presented by A Molinari' together with a 1970 Olsztyn bronze presentation medallion: Bylismy Jestesmy Bedziemy, Olsztyn 1970.
Commander Edward Evans, (1880-1957) A signed letter from Commander Edwards to the Underwood Typewriter Co., dated 23rd January 1913, from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, agreeing to return a typewriter that was used on expedition to display in a shop window, together with an envelope addressed to Mr. F. M. Trevoe from Greece, with an additional medal moulded with a typewriter monogrammed to the reverse with ' FMT from JTU 1907'(2) Note: Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Evans (1881-1957) was a British naval officer and explorer. He was seconded by the Navy to the Antarctic in 1901-04, when he was on the crew of the relief ship, and afterwards began planning his own Antarctic expedition. He suspended this plan when offered the post of second-in-command on Scott's ill-fated expedition to the South Pole in 1910-1913, as captain of the expedition ship Terra Nova. He accompanied Scott to within 150 miles of the Pole, but later became seriously ill with scurvy and only narrowly survived the return journey.
