CELTIC F.C. INTEREST - SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD MEDAL 1965/66, the obverse with central shield shaped plaque with red enamelled lion rampant motif, surrounded by enamelled thistle motifs and blue enamel border inscribed 'Scottish Football League Championship', the reverse inscribed 'First Division, Season 1965-66', 45mm high including bale, maker JWB, in nine carat gold, 14.9gNote: This season was pivotal for Celtic F.C. in a number of ways. It was the first full season in charge for legendary manager Jock Stein, who clinched his first title as manager by triumphing over arch-rivals Rangers by a margin of two points. This would be the first of what would eventually become 9 titles in a row and, furthermore, victory allowed for qualification into next year's European Cup which the team would go on to famously win 'in the heat of Lisbon'.Condition report: Condition good to fair. There is a minor loss to the enamel as per the photograph, and wear as per age. Unfortunately we have no knowledge as to who this medal was awarded to. Hallmarks are for Birmingham 1958.
GLASGOW NORTH EASTERN FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION GOLD MEDAL 1888/89,awarded to Mick McKeown of Celtic F.C., the obverse monogrammed 'J.W' to a shield shaped cartouche below a purple coloured stone, the reverse inscribed 'Won by Celtic F.C M. McKeown 1888-89', marked 'DO(?)', 4.3cm including bale, 11.8gNote: A scarce and important piece, this is one of the very earliest medals awarded to one of the very earliest Celtic players.Mick McKeon began his career at Celtic after he was lured from Hibernian in 1888.The Ayrshire-born left-back played his competitive debut for Celtic in the 5-1 Scottish Cup victory over Shettleston on September 1st 1888. He was also to play for the side in their first ever final, the Glasgow Exhibition Cup final, which Celtic lost 2-0 to Cowlairs, then regarded as a shock result.Capped by Scotland, McKeown was a fine and much sought after talent but he was also an outspoken and fiery character who was only too happy to offer his considerable skills to the highest bidder.During his stay at Parkhead he made it be known that if Celtic weren’t prepared to recognise his worth then he would be on the move. It was rumoured that during one such discussion McKeown was so incensed by the club’s offer to him he struck club secretary John O’Hara. In many ways, possibly the first true modern player by attitude alone. He had several fallouts with other key players and officials and at one time declared to the press he was leaving Celtic to play for the breakaway Glasgow Hibernian, and was even offered captaincy of the new club. The majority of those at Celtic thankfully were against any such idea of following the Edinburgh club’s policy and it has been a proud statement of Celtic’s to support or employ any man regardless of their creed, despite the actions of those who wanted to thwart it.Celtic refused to release his kit and he was to remain with the Bhoys after his issues were resolved. In August 1891 McKeown did finally depart Celtic Park when he moved to England and Blackburn Rovers. He was soon back at Celtic, but playing in a friendly v Celtic for Blackburn Rovers, with Celtic winning 3-2.That move proved to be the beginning of the end for the player. A heavy drinker, his problems with alcohol worsened and his stay in Lancashire lasted less than a year. He returned to Scotland and had brief and unsuccessful spells at a number of minor clubs. He had became a rather poor sight, living day to day dependent on charity & handouts. He was also a regular at court for various frequent drink related misdemeanours. A spell in the army lasted less than a year when he was dismissed and described as being “worthless”.Michael McKeown died on October 25th 1903 aged just 33. His body was found lying in a lime kiln just a short stroll away from Celtic Park in Camlachie. He had died from asphyxiation.A pauper’s grave awaited the former Scotland star but Celtic did not forget their former player despite past run-ins. Celtic did the decent thing and arranged the funeral and burial to give him at least an honourable send-off.It was a sad end for the player, and a bleak warning to others. Football may have given the opportunity to the few to escape the drudgery of other lines they may have been driven into (such as working down the pits) but some mishandled the chance or couldn’t live up to it. It was to be a story that would repeat itself too often in the history of football even to today.

ALEXANDER IGNATIUS ROCHE RSA NEAC RP (SCOTTISH 1863 - 1921),THE WALK TO THE RIVERoil on canvas, signedimage size 63cm x 75cm, overall size 87cm x 99cm Framed.Note: Born at Gallowgate in Glasgow on 17th August 1861, the son of a milliner, Alexander Roche was schooled at St Mungo’s Academy and then attended classes at the Glasgow School of Art while working in an architect's office. His real art training came in Paris, where he studied for several years from 1881, under Boulanger and Lefebvre at Julien’s and later under Gérome at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts. While in Paris he met and befriended several other Scottish students including William Kennedy, (Sir) John Lavery and Thomas Millie Dow, along with Dow’s mentor, William Stott of Oldham. Together they painted at Grez-Sur-Loing, just south of Fontainebleau, all influenced by Bastien-Lepage (1848-84) and the plein-airistes. In 1885 Roche returned to Glasgow where he painted a number of romantic idylls of girls in gardens, interiors or in landscape, such as The Dominie’s (schoolmaster) Favourites exhibited at the Glasgow Institute in 1885, No. 591, which was priced at the great sum of £250 and The Shepherdess (exhibited to acclaim at the RA 1890). He moved to a cottage on the banks of the Luggie in Dunbartonshire and there some of his best landscapes were painted. Most of 1888 was spent in Capri, where he was associated with a cosmopolitan group of artists including Fabio Fabbi and Harold Speed. Two further trips to Italy followed, to Florence and Venice, in the early 1890s when he painted peasants in the Sabine Hills. In Florence, he met and married an Italian girl, but the marriage was not to last. In 1896 Roche moved to Edinburgh and began to paint portraits and figure studies. His sense of colour and confident brushwork were well suited to portraiture and in his later years this became his main output and source of income. He spent some time in the USA, fulfilling portrait commissions and seeking others. Among his lucrative commissions was a group portrait for Andrew Carnegie, then the world’s richest man, of his wife Louise (nee Whitfield) and their daughter, Margaret. He won a gold medal at Munich 1891, an Hon. Mention at the Paris Salon 1892 and a gold medal at Dresden 1897. Elected ARSA 1894 and RSA 1900, he exhibited at the RSA from 1887 - 1976 and at the RA from 1890 - 1919. Roche was considered a member of the Glasgow School, but after the late 1880s he drifted to the fringes of the movement. In 1906, he remarried, to Jean, daughter of the animal painter Robert Alexander and sister of Edwin, the flower and animal painter. All four shared a friendship with Joseph Crawhall, together with a love of Tangier. They lived from 1907 until the outbreak of the Great War at 8 Royal Terrace in Edinburgh, a very prestigious Edinburgh address reflecting his considerable commercial success. Around this time he was struck with a cerebral haemorrhage which paralysed his right hand. He taught himself to paint with his left and was later to produce some exceptional landscapes. The Roches later bought a house, Hailes Cottage in the village of Slateford, by the Water of Leith, to the southwest of Edinburgh, where he died, on 10th March 1921, aged 59. UK public collections hold forty examples of his work including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The National Galleries of Scotland, The Fleming Collection, The Kelvingrove, The Hunterian, Edinburgh, Kirkcaldy, Stirling The Royal Scottish Academy and The Walker Art Gallery.
