A Board of Trade medal for gallantry in saving lives (bronze) group of 4:-The gallantry medal is named to Richard Harvey Williams "Laleham" 31st March 1926, WWI victory and 14/15 star to C2716 R.H. Williams A.B. R.N.R. and Naval Long Service to C2716 R.H. Williams Sea R.N. sold with his merchant shipping continuous certificate of discharge (1912-1930) and newspaper cuttings of his exploits. Exerts of the cuttings read:- On the receipt of a letter from the Board of Trade, Mr R.H. Williams, of Duke-street, Newlyn, has been informed that His Majesty, the King, will personally present to him a bronze medal for the part which he took in rescuing the crew of a steamer which was on the point of sinking during a fierce gale in the Atlantic Ocean on the 31st March. The story of the rescue is one of the most thrilling romances of the sea which have been disclosed for a long time, and is on a par with the rescue which was effected by members of the crew of the liner President Roosevelt which created such a sensation some time ago. When interviewed at his home on Wednesday morning by our representative, Mr Williams readily showed him the two letters he had received from the Board of Trade, and then proceeded to tell the story of the rescue. "We were the first to approach the distressed vessel, and sighted her between 4 and 5 o'clock. The Mauretania was then about 180 miles off. As we drew near, we discovered that her boats were smashed, her engine-room skylight and superstructure were smashed, and the engine-room and stokehold were flooded; her valves were choked, she had a heavy list to starboard, and was then in a sinking condition.A letter from the Board of Trade read:-"Dear Sir,-I am directed by the Board of Trade to inform you that His Majesty the King has been pleased, upon the recommendation of the President, to award you the bronze medal for gallantry in saving life at sea, in recognition of your services in connection with the rescue of the shipwrecked crew of the s.s. Lalaham, of London, on the 31st March last."In addition, the Board of Trade have awarded you the sum of £2."The lot is sold with WWII medals (2) 1939/45 star (2) and Atlantic star (2)
