A collection of twenty-eight original World War II Allied Army typed and handwritten recommendation documents each relating to different individuals and with narratives of the actions for which they were recommended, circa 1941/42. Covering the Battle of Crete and the North African Campaign. Including many New Zealand and South African Division recommendations. Army Forms W.3121.Together with single recommendations for members of the "J+K Mountain Battery" (Indian Army); the 51st Field Regiment, RA (22nd Guards) and the 1st Canadian Infantry (Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment). (28 total) Example transcriptions include:Military Medal - 31693 Cpl (L/Sgt) Edward Hawthorne Elliott, 19 A/Tps.Coy. (N.Z.) for his actions 'in Crete on the morning of the 23rd May ... in carrying a wounded man to safety. Ellliott moved over a very exposed area of ground through heavy enemy fire to rescue Sapper E.T. Taylor who had been wounded while stalking an enemy post... Throughout his actions in Greece and Crete, Elliott was cool and daring, and an example to the men under his command.' Distinguished Conduct Medal - 7921 Lance/Sergt. Victor David Kirk, 4th Inf. N.Z'throughout his operations, his N.C. showed exceptional gallantry, coolness and skill. He was in the leading platoon during the attack on MALEME on May 22 and with his section fought his way forward in continuous fighting for over two miles, displaying the utmost resolution, and repeatedly rushing and destroying the MG posts. He then accompanied an officer on a very dangerous journey through 600 yards of enemy-occupied ground, shooting a German on the way and bringing safely back about 100 men who would otherwise have been cut off. At GALATOS on May 25 when his company was outflanked, he organised a party and led a counter-attack which was completely successful, 44 Germans bring killed of whom Kirl accounted for 11. Being separated from his Company he then with his party joined in the counter attack on GALATOS made by the 23 Bn., disposed of a large number of the enemy and remained in position on the outskirts of the village until 0530 hours next morning when finding that all other troops had withdrawn some hours before he skilfully led out his party and rejoined his unit.'

John Young, Guild of Aviation Artists (1930-2015) 'Beauty and Power'watercolour and gouache, appears to be a preparatory watercolour for a print published in 1986 for the Royal Air Force Museum on the Fiftieth Anniversary of the First Flight of the Vickers Supermarine Spitfire, signed by the artist Air Vice Marshal Smith, titled and signed in the mount, watercolour 41cm x 24.5cm, overall dimensions 60.5 x 45.5cm, unframed.Notes: William John Young was an aviation artist who, as a small boy, was inspired by seeing Sir Alan Cobham’s Flying Circus. He went on to paint a huge range of aircraft from many periods, many of which he had flown, and his pictures were noted for technical accuracy combined with period and location atmosphere. He attended High Wycombe School of Art, 1946–8, then after two years in the Royal Air Force, became a painter, illustrating books and working for manufacturers and air forces. Young went freelance in the early 1960s. He showed with the first exhibition of the Society of Aviation Artists; was chairman of the Kronfeld Aviation Art Society; was a founder-member of the Guild of Aviation Artists, and gained its Gold Medal in 1983 and its chairmanship in 1987. Forty-five of Young's original paintings are displayed in the R.A.F. Museum in Hendon.

A First World War child's uniform for a Staff Sergeant of the Royal Army Medical Corps (Territorial), comprising a tunic with rank chevrons and crown to the arms, brass buttons, 'T/5' and 'T/RAMC' shoulder titles, 'Canada' general service collar badges, white lanyard and a 1902 coronation medal with ribbon, with matching pair of trousers Provenance: Sold together with an original Daily Mirror newspaper clipping dated February 15th 1915, with a photograph of the original owner in the uniform, captioned 'Little John Bull at the Meet'. Children wore such types of uniform as patriotic symbols, often made up with the insignia of their father's branch of service. Scarce item. Heavily worn with rips and losses, particularly to the trousers. The tunic has a hole near one pocket.

MJR SANFORD", with matching pair of miniatures; and a George V 1897 Pattern Royal Engineers sword, named to A.J Sanford, retailed by G E Carrington, Old Brompton, Kent, serial number 5694, the blade etched with regimental crest and foliate motifs, with wire-bound black rayskin grip and a leather sword knot, blade length 32.5", complete with both the field service scabbard with an outer cover, further named to 'A.J Sanford', and a nickel plated steel dress scabbard.Notes: Medal Rolls for the QSA show A.J Sanford served with the 43rd Company Royal Engineers during the Boer War, and by 1914, Army lists show he is serving with the Coast Battalion. Probable death date of 26th February 1924.Sword

A First World War Military Cross groupcomprising 1914-15 Star named to "13516 SJT. W.J. BATHURST., S. STAFF. R.", 1914-18 War Medal and Victory Medal, named to "Capt. W.J Bathurst" and Military Cross, unnamed as issued, in original case. (4)Sold together with copies of medal records and his citation for the M.C which reads, 'During active operations, he sent valuable reports, obtained by personal reconnaissance at great risk. Later, his company went through a village under a terrific fire from machine guns. He showed remarkable courage on this occasion and was dangerously wounded'. Gazetted 29th November 1919. Notes: William John Bathurst was entitled to the 1914-15 Star with the Staffordshire Regiment before transferring to the Cheshire Regiment and being awarded the War Medal, Victory Medal and Military Cross.

He attested for service on 12th September 1916 with "C" Battery, R.C.H.A, arriving in England on the SS Mauretania on 30th November 1916. On 6th June 1917, he proceeded overseas to 9th SB and saw service in France before being detached as a wireless operator with Can. Corps Hoy. Arty.

A First World War Trio of medals comprising 1914-15 Star, named to "2876 L. Cpl. T.L Jones, R.Fus" and a War Medal and Victory Medal, named to "SPTS-2876 Cpl. T.L Jones R. Fus." Notes: Thomas Llewellyn Jones served in the 24th (Service) Bn (2nd Sportsman's), The Royal Fusiliers and saw action in France. Rather than be taken from a small geographical area, these particular battalions were primarily made up of men who had made their name in sports such as cricket, golf, boxing and football or the media. It was intended for upper and middle-class men, physically fit, able to shoot and ride, up to the age of 45. The 24th (Service) Battalion (2nd Sportsman's) was raised in London on 20 November 1914 by Mrs Cunliffe-Owen, became attached to 99th Brigade, 33rd Division in June 1915 and transferred to 5th Brigade in 2nd Division in December 1915. Famous recruits included the millionaire politician Sir Herbert Raphael and cricketer C. P. McGahey. Training took place at Hare Hall near Romford. Amongst those recruited was Frederic Thomas Horne, the Liberal Agent for West Gloucestershire, who fell at the Somme on 5 September 1916.

A World War 1 trio comprising 1914 Mons Star, War Medal and Victory Medal awarded to "1848 Pte. T. Ward - 16 Lond. R." with three ribbon bar and silver rosette (denotes clasp awarded) together with 1914 brass Christmas box with Christmas card, employment card and registration card, and a silver war badge numbered 115524.1848 Rifleman Thomas Ward, 1/16th Queen's Westminster Rifles, confirmed on medal rolls and silver war badge records. Attestation forms show Ward was 26 years old at enlistment and reached the Expeditionary Force in France on 1st November 1914. He was discharged on 8th August 1916.

R.” comprising 1914-15 Star, War Medal and Victory Medal (3)Notes: William Albert Lawrence (b.1892 in Berkshire) served with the 6th (Service) Battalion of the Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire) Regiment. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916 and commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial to the missing in France.1st Jul 1916 In Action 6th Btn. Royal Berkshire Regiment's War Diary records: 12 Midnight - Battalion in forming up trenches in A2 subsector Carnoy 7am - Coys report all ready and everything in order.7.28 am - Casino Point mine exploded - some casualties caused by debris thrown back into our first two assembly trenches. First wave advanced into No Mans's Land. 7.30 - Attack launched - First wave takes Mine Trench and Casino Point. 7.32 - Second wave advanced from forming up point in No Man's land. 7.35 - First batch of 6 prisoners brought in, shoulder straps, button and all papers sent by special runner to Brigade Advanced Report centre. 3rd wave moved forward from our line.7.50 - First wave reached Pommier Trench having suffered heavy casualties. Lt Hollis went forward to Bund Support and reported Capt Litten killed and no officers remaining with left leading Coy (B Coy). Capt McArthur wounded. Capt Longhurst wounded has ordered 2/Lt Courage to move up and take command of B Coy. As far as known Capt Fenner still with A Coy but 2/Lt Collot and Lt Traill killed. Bombardment of Pommier Redoubt continued. Bombers of B Coy and Btn Bombers start bombing up Popoff Lane. Vickers Guns sent up to get in position near junction of Popoff Lane and Pommiers Trench. Norfolks held up round the Loop, right flank exposed. Work of consolidation started. Suffering severe casualties from MG in the Loop. 9.30 - Pommier Redoubt assaulted and taken, line starts to advance towards Montauban Alley. 9.35 - Bn HQ moved to Pommiers Trench. 2Lt Hollis remained in old Report Centre. On left we are in touch with Bedfords and are advancing up Montauban Alley by bombing. Have suffered heavy casualties especially among Officers" Reported verbally to Brigade. 10.40 Reported that Norfolks have taken Loop. Pi/3 sent to Brigade. 10.50 - Norfolks still held up at Back Trench and Boche Trench. Bombing attacks at Montauban Alley and Loop Trench progressing slowly.10.55 - Collected about 30 scattered men and pushed these into attack at Montayban Alley, two Stokes guns. 11.10 - Situation reported to Brigade in Pi/5. 12.15 - Situation reported to Brigade in Pi/74. Small reserve of about 30 men collected Pi/73 sent to OC A Coy. 12.50 - Bombing attack on Montauban Alley progressed well and half the line taken. Attack up Loop Trench has cleared up to the Montauban - Mamaetz road. Slow progress continuing at both points. Essex have arranged to support us with 30 bombers for Loop Trench. Pi/75 to Brigade by Pigeon. 1.30 - CO and Adjt visited whole line. Position: The Norfolks still not up on our right. Capt Fenner with about 50 men hold Loop Trench to the point where it crosses the Montauban - Mametz road and are bombing on but are meeting with desperate resistance. line from these runs across open to Montauban Alley about 100yds from its junction west of Loop Trench. Essex bombers not yet arrived and urgently called for again. Advance held up by several MGs and snipers and bombers. 3.15 - Right report repeated attacks fail to effect advance, can reinforcements be sent up? Norfolks in touch on . ourright but not assisting by advancing. Pi/78 sent to Norfolks. Reinforcements, 1 Capt 2 subalterns and 2 OR arrived. 3.20 - Essex bombers arrive and sent up to Montauban Alley.4.00 - Advance appreciably increased at Montauban Alley. Two unemployed Stokes Guns found and sent to support attack in Loop Trench.4.45 - Situation reported to Brigade in Pi/80.4.50 - Brigade report verbally a rebombardment of Caterpillar Trench and Montauban Alley. We urgently request them to cancel this as our two bombing attacks are advancing successfully.5.20 - Brigade report verbally rebombardment put off 30 mins. Our advance has progressed considerably and the two parties only separated by 50 yds.5.40 - Rebombardment cancelled. Montauban Alley and Loop Trench taken, line pushing on to final position & objective. 5.45 - Loop Trench handed over to Norfolks who we advised to bomb up Caterpillar Trench. 6.10 - Situation reported to Norfolk HQ see Pi/85. 6.15 - Bn HQ moved up into Montauban Alley, communication by wire with Brigade HQ established. 6.30 - Final objective reached. Work of consolidation progressing satisfactorily. Supplies of ammunition, food, water, bombs, grenades and a flame projector brought up.

An interesting accumulation of items relating to William ‘Jim’ John Ashman, who travelled from Britain to the United States and enlisted with the 4th Infantry (Machine Gun Company) during the Mexican Revolution and U.S. Occupation of Veracruz before subsequently returning home to serve with the British Armed Forces in WW1. Comprising: Two large panoramic albumen photographs: 5th Brigade Camp, Fort Crockett, Texas, photo copyright 1915 by Medley and Henningsen; and 4th & 7th Infantry Camp, Fort Crockett, Texas 1914, photo copyright Medley and Glandford, each measuring 128cm x 23.5cm (previously framed, now rolled) Approximately 156 loose printed and real photographic postcards relating to America and Mexico, circa 1912-15. Subjects include military camp life and soldiers in Galveston and Veracruz, boxing matches and group portraits; the wreck of a U.S aeroplane at No. 11 Mobilization camp, Texas City; portrait of General Pancho and Mrs Villa; street scenes and views of daily life in Mexico; Mexican outlaws and ‘Mujereres Patriotas’ (with an inscription to reverse ‘I am not afraid of the men but I don’t like to come across this bunch, the women are worse than the men’). Other cards document deaths, damages, and consequences of the invasion, including damage to the Naval School building in Veracruz, prisoners being marched to their execution, and several graphic postcards of such as piles of the dead killed near the customs house (April 21st – 22nd, 1914). Related ephemera - Five Thanksgiving and Christmas Rosters/Menu Cards (‘D’ Company 4thS Infantry – Fort Crook Nebraska 1912 and Camp Crockett Texas, 1913 and 1914); a St Patrick’s Day Masquerade Ball ticket; United States Army Signal Book 1914, circulated Confederate States currency bank notes, including a $500 note; a Special Privilege Card; a copy of ‘American Occupation – Vera Cruz 1914’ (National Capital Press, 1914) named to William Ashman in the inside cover. Ashman’s pair of stirrups; leather gaiters; folding campaign rack, a medal or token commemorating the US Army on the Mexican Border, Galveston Texas; American Occupation of Veracruz Mexico 1914 medal (named to W.J Ashman, very worn) and another, unnamed, etc. A further album of printed postcards of the United States and Canada, including twenty-six different State Girl postcards, felt pennant postcards from Nova Scotia, various Fort Crockett illustrated humorous postcards etc. Together with items relating to Ashman’s service during WW1 and later (Glamorgan Yeomanry, Welsh Regiment and Shropshire Yeomanry): Comprising a bundle of dog tags, 1914-18 War Medal and Victory Medal (named to “320950 Pte. W. J Ashman). War Service badge, pair of Glamorgan shoulder titles. Welch cap badge and a Glamorgan Yeomanry Badge. General Joffre and 1914-1919 War commemorative medals. An Official Copy Soldier’s Prayer book and a copy of the New Testament. A collection of British postcards, including photographs of Ashman boxing and two further small albums of greetings postcards etc. A discharge certificate, dated 2nd July 1921. A small collection of business and trade cards together with a White Star line ticket (for his return to the UK in 1915), various invitations, business and trade cards. A brass button cleaner and two pocket knives.William John Ashman (b. 16th December 1890 - d. July 1970). Travelled to Halifax, Nova Scotia on 18th July 1912. Spent some time working as a cattle rancher before enlisting with the U.S Army on 16th October 1912. Returned home to the UK in 1915. Enlisted with the Welsh Regiment in the same year and later transferred to the Shropshire Yeomanry. Service numbers 320950 and (Tf)396246.The postcards in this lot were sent predominantly to Ashman's sister or parents. The majority are not postmarked, although they are often captioned to the reverse with additional personal commentary by Ashman. Some feature portraits of Ashman, including in uniform and, given his talent for bare-knuckle boxing, during boxing matches in both the United States and at home.
