A North Russia Casualty group of three to Major H.Fawcett, Royal Marines Light Infantry,1914-15 Star (Capt H.Fawcett R.M.L.I.); British War and Victory Medal (Maj.H.Fawcett. R.M.L.I.). Good very fine. (3)Footnotes:M.I.D. London Gazette 13.7.1916.Major Henry Fawcett was born on the 28th February 1884, he was from Hove in Sussex he enlisted in 1902 into the Royal Marine Light Infantry. He was promoted to Captain in 1913 and on the 17th May 1913 he went to the Central Flying School at Upavon. He was seconded to the Royal Naval Air Service and is sent to Great Yarmouth from 13th August 1913 to 25th September 1914. On the 23rd August 1914 he is forced to land in heavy sea and thick fog 30 miles E.S.E. of Fair Island. From the 17th October until the 28th July 1915 he is based at Killingholme Air Station and is involved in patrolling the coast and the defence of oil tanks. From the 13th August until the 13th February 1916 he is based in the Dardanelles on the island of Imbres. On the 16th November 1915 to Kuleli Bugas to bomb railway 15 miles South of Adrianople. Bombs were dropped successfully on junction of Dedeagatch-Adrianople and Constantinople. He returns to the U.K. and is then based at Redcar. He transfers to Dunkirk on the 19th January 1917 and is noted as having done considerable flying under Active Service conditions, generally under fire from the 20th January 1917 to the 23rd August 1917. He had worked up to the joint rank of Squadron Commander (RNAS)/Major (RMLI) but lost a rank and was put back to Captain when he returned to the RMLI. He soon got up to Major again and was seconded to the Army in 1918.He was in charge of the Royal Marine contingent that landed at Murmansk in March 1918 to secure the port (with Trotsky's agreement) after the apparent failure of the Brest Litovsk treaty talks.He went on to become head of Military Intelligence at Murmansk (the head of Naval Intelligence was, curiously, an Army Major) and ran agents into Finland and Petrograd. He was 'accidentally shot' and died on Dec 29th 1918.Major Fawcett is buried in Murmansk New British Cemetery.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

(6)Footnotes:Captain Davidson first served overseas in France on the 20th October 1917 with the North Staffordshire Regiment then served with the 2/76th Punjabis, was wounded twice. Instructor at Iraq Military College Jan 1922 to April 1926. Director of the Small Arms School Iraq Army April 1926 to 15 February 1928.
