Believed John McLure Hamilton ( Anglo American 1853 - 1936 ) Portrait of Sanford B Dole who led the revolt of which toppled Queen Lilioukalani in Hawaii thus becoming 1st President of Hawaii until the annexation of the island by the United States ( Bayonet Constitution 1893)  Oil on canvas painting being unsigned. Frame measures 75cms x 86cms / canvas 49cms x 60cmsCanvas marked for Cornelissen's of London where John McLure Hamilton was known to buy art supplies. Mclure Hamilton being well noted for painting figures of note both American and English  (Hamilton was a member of the American Federation of Arts, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Senefelder Club, London. His portraits are found in the following galleries; Luxembourg Museum, Paris, (which is devoted to artists foreign to France), the National Portrait Gallery, London and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts,[2] which awarded him its Gold Medal of Honor in 1918. Lot 56 is a painting also believed to be the hand of John McLure Hamilton and the sitter believed to be the stepmother of Sanford B Dole, Charlotte Close Knapp. His father Daniel Dole remarried after the death of his mother just after the birth of Sanford.  Both paintings consigned from the same house, this painting also unsigned but with markings for Cornelissen's.

A First World War medal group to Major Montgomerie Boyle (1859-1919), R.A.S.C., comprising: the 1914-15 Star (to Capt. M. Boyle A.S.C.), the War Medal and the Victory Medal (each to Major M. Boyle), with Memorial Plaque, George V Coronation medal and the Territorial Decoration, hallmarked for London 1918, together with Scroll and Presentation Letter. Provenance: by descent. Note: Montgomerie Boyle served in the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry having been commissioned in 1897 and later transferred to another Territorial unit, the 2nd South Western Mounted Brigade. Although fifty-five years of age at the outbreak of the War he joined up and, as part of the R.A.S.C. served in East Africa and under Allenby in the Sinai and Palestine campaign. He was invalided home in 1918 and died shortly thereafter.
