A SCARCE PAIR OF GEORGE II SCOTTISH PROVINCIAL SALTS squat circular on three moulded legs with stepped hoof feet, gilt interiors, engraved crest & motto "DISCE PATI"* by Alexander Johnston, Dundee (AI, pot of lilies, AI, L (script)) c.1740-50; 3" (7.7 cms) diameter; 6.5 oz (2) *"Crest & Motto is that of Duncan as borne by Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan (1731-1804) and his son Robert Dundas Haldane-Duncan, 2nd Viscount Duncan (1785-1859) who was created Earl of Camperdown in 1831. Adam Duncan was the second son of Alexander Duncan of Lundie, Angus (died May 1777) who was Provost of Dundee. In 1746 after being educated at Dundee, Adam joined the Royal Navy and went on to have an extremely distinguished career rising to the rank of Admiral and his golden hour was defeating the Dutch fleet off Camperdown (North of Haarlem) which was considered one of the most significant actions in Naval History. For this achievement he was at once raised to the Peerage as Viscount Duncan, of Camperdown and Baron Duncan of Lundie, Perthsire. He was awarded the large Naval Gold Medal and an annual pension of £3000 (incidentally this was the largest pension ever awarded by the British Government)."
