A group of medals to Lt. Commander Gray RNR, George V Distinguished Service Order (DSO), 1914/15 Star, War Medal and Croix de Guerre, together with a replica Victory Medal. Frederick William Gray was born in 1872 and was a Hull Trinity House boy, serving his apprenticeship with the Wilson Line. In 1892 he obtained his Second Mate ticket, followed by First Mate in 1894 and Master in 1897. In 1902 he was Captain of S.S. Swanee. On the 5th December he enlisted as a Lieutenant with the R.N.R., and was mentioned in Dispatches in July 1917. He was awarded the D.S.O. in November 1917 whilst in command of H.M.S. Jacent, an armed trawler, for his action in the sinking of UC 41, a mine laying submarine off the Tay Estuary. In May 1918 he received the Croix de Guerre and in July 1918 was promoted to Lt. Commander. His sister was married to John Bulmer whose medals are included in this auction.

An Albert Medal (second class) and Mercantile Marine War Medal, awarded to John David Bulmer. Inscribed verso; "Presented by His Majesty to John David Bulmer, boatswain of the S.S. Rhydwer of Cardiff, for gallantry at a fire, on board the vessel at, Genoa, 31st January 1917". Provenance; by descent. John Bulmer (1881 - 1939) was born in Selby, Yorkshire, he married Florence Gray of Hull in 1904. It is recorded by the Board of Trade, Whitehall Gardens, 7th September 1917 "That the KING (is) pleased to confer the Decoration of the Albert Medal upon John David Bulmer, boatswain of the steamship "Rhydwen," of Cardiff, and Private John Edward Brown, R.M.L.I". The following is an account of the services in respect of which the Decoration has been conferred: "On the 31st January 1917, while the steamship "Rhydwen," of Cardiff, was lying at Genoa, a fire broke out in the ship's magazine. A fire signal was immediately hoisted, but, before assistance arrived Bulmer and Brown went below, unlocked the door of the magazine and got the hose at the seat of the fire. Water was then played on the magazine and the ammunition was taken out on deck, and, owing to the prompt action of the ship's crew, the fire was extinguished. Considerable risk was incurred by Bulmer and Brown in rendering the service." Private John Edward Brown belonged to the Royal Marine Light Infantry. He was a DEMS gunner assigned to the ship. (Defensively Equipped Merchant Ship). The Rhydwen was a steam powered cargo ship built in 1914; she was torpedoed and sunk on the 18th March 1917 by U67. His wife's brother was Lt. Commander F.W. Gray, whose medals are included in this auction.

A family collection of medals concerning the Witty family of Castle Hill, Hunmanby, North Yorkshire, dating from World War One to the 1950s. The three sons of William R. Witty a bricklayer and his wife Emma served in the Yorkshire Regiment and the Royal Field Artillery during WWI. Private Ernest Reveley Witty, service number 3659, of the 1/5 Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, died on the 13th April 1916, aged 26, and is buried in Lindenhoek Chalet Military Cemetery at Kemmel in Belgium. Included are his named death plaque in original envelope and card cover, a framed death scroll, 1914-1918 war medal, Victory medal, a letter from the Record Office, York enclosing the Victory Medal, two copy photographs (one in uniform taken c1914), a copy photograph of his CWGC headstone and a communication from the Director of Graves Registrations and enquiries enclosing a photograph of his grave with original wooden marker. Private Ralph Witty, service number 3658 renumbered 235025, of the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, died on the 1st October 1918, aged 23, and is buried in Glageon Communal Cemetery Extension at Nord in France. Included are his named death plaque in original envelope and card cover, a framed death scroll, 1914-1918 war medal, Victory medal, a letter from the Record Office, York to accompany the Victory Medal and two copy photographs (one in uniform taken c1914). Private George Walter Witty, service number 2494 of the Yorkshire Regiment transferred to the Royal Army Ordnance Corp with number 046547 after being wounded. Included are his 1914/1915 Star, 1914-1918 War Medal, Victory Medal, an Army Form W.5118 to accompany preliminary issue of the Victory Medal Riband, a small box containing the bullet removed from his kidney when he was wounded, two copy photographs (one in uniform taken c1914) and a photograph of him with B Company, 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Also included are a medal envelope addressed to Mr W. R. Witty, Castle Hill, Hunmanby and a medal bar for Queen's South Africa Medal, King's South Africa Medal, 1914-1918 War Medal and Victory Medal, together with the notification enclosed with a death plaque, the envelope containing a card and photograph dated 1914 from the Princess Mary Christmas tin, a 1914 Star and Victory Medal to 22548 Gunner W. S. Parker, Royal Field Artillery, a 1914-1918 War Medal to 50575 Driver C. V. Floater, WWII Africa Star, 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal, 1939-1945 War medal and a Queen Elizabeth II Imperial Service Medal marked to John Forrest Witty in presentation case.

WW1 British Royal Navy Medal group comprising of 1914-15 Star, War Medal, Victory Medal and Imperial Russian Order of St. Anne, 3rd class to Payr Lt Cr EP Rickcord, RN. Complete with all original ribbons and with the original case for the Order of St. Anne with instructions for wear. This group comes with his Service Certificates dating from 1897 to 1929, a book of Sea Phrases English & Italian dated 1893, copies of the citation for the Order of St Anne, English translation award citation given for service on HMS Jupiter in 1915 along with extensive family history research, copies of articles related to the family's RN service. Also included in the group is his Royal Navy Officers Sword with 80cm long single edged fullered proof marked blade with etched decoration. No makers mark. Wire bound shagreen grip, lions head pommel. Overall length 96cm. Complete with leather scabbard with twin suspension rings.

WW1 British Medal Group to 105889 Company Quartermaster Sergeant H Finch, Royal Engineers comprising of 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Distinguished Conduct Medal, WW2 Defence Medal and French Croix de Gurre with Bronze Star. All complete with original ribbons. He was attached to the Railway Operating Division. His Citation for the DCM reads: 105889 CQMS H Finch RE (Wolverhampton) London Gazette 3 Sept 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He managed to detach two wagons containing shells which had been ignited by enemy fire from a train, and by his gallant action saved the rest. He has previously done fine work. Also included in the sale is his hallmarked Gold London Midland and Scottish Railway Ambulance Center medallion in original case.

Plus a ribbon bar. Comes with photocopy photos of Mr Williams wearing his medals. He served for 37 years and completed his service as a Warrant Officer. He was involved with the capture of the German Spy Carl Lody, who was later shot at the Tower of London.
