From 1884 he traded as Charles Frodsham & Co, which remains in existence as the longest continuously trading firm of chronometer manufacturers in the world. At the Great Exhibition in 1851, he was awarded a first-class medal for his timekeepers. The firm won fourteen further medals and honours at the major international exhibitions over the rest of the nineteenth century. In 1997 the company moved to new retail premises at 32 Bury Street, St. James’s, and set up a manufacturing and conservation workshop in East Sussex, where it continues today, specialising in English precision horology.

He was born in Manhattan, New York City, in 1886 - the fourth child of William Waldorf Astor, 1st Viscount Astor, and Mary Dahlgren Paul. He was five years old when his family left New York to live in England. He represented Great Britain in rackets at the 1908 Summer Olympics, winning the gold medal in the men's doubles competition and bronze in the men's singles event. In 1922, he purchased The Times newspaper following the death of its owner, Alfred Harmsworth. During his tenure, the newspaper sponsored Edmund Hillary's expedition which made the first successful climb to the summit of Mount Everest. Astor remained Chairman of the paper until 1959 when his son, Gavin, took over. On 21 January 1956 he was created Baron Astor of Hever, of Hever Castle, in Kent. In 1962, he moved from England to France andhe died on 19 July, 1971 in Cannes.

One of the panes of the stained glass panel featuring the lion has been broken, Spotting, fixing, discolouration, staining, etc, to documents to varying degrees. Some of the outer bindings are very worn and mottled. Some of the cases where applicable are worn and have loose joints/hinges. Dome of the documents are extensively foxed. The case within which it is contained is heavily worn with surface losses and heavy discolouration. The stained glass panels are all loose with quite heavy surface wear.

British Royal Artillery Majors Battle Dress Uniform Set, consisting of a 1944 dated, probably Canadian made walking out pattern officer tailored battle dress blouse which has EIIR rank insignia to shoulders, embroidered Royal Artillery shoulder titles and printed 44th Home Counties division formation signs. 1939-45 War medal and Territorial decoration medal ribbons above the breast pocket. Accompanied by a pair of 1945 dated officers battle dress trousers and a similar battle dress with the same insignia but not dated or marked. All items remain in good condition. (3 items)
WW2 9th (Oxted) Battalion Surrey Home Guard Battle Dress Blouse, good example of a wartime battle dress blouse which is complete with all of its original insignia, including Home Guard shoulder titles and designation formation sign “SY 9”, rank stripe and red felt insignia to the lower arm. WW1 medal ribbons to the breast and interior with original size label. Good overall condition.
