SIR EDWARD AUGUSTUS INGLEFIELD (1820-1894) The Battle of Obligado, 20th November 1845 signed 'Inglefield RN' (lower left) watercolour heightened with white 22 x 37in (55.8 x 94.2cm) In the aftermath of the overthrow of Spanish colonial rule during the second and third decades of the nineteenth century, several nearly-independent countries in South America found themselves burdened with age-old boundary disputes as well as internal strife. One of these feuds - between Argentina and Uruguay in 1845 - was only resolved by the intervention of Britain and France who were obliged to send a joint naval expedition up the Parana River to relieve Montevideo which was under siege by Uruguayan rebels with the assistance of Argentinian warships. With the interests of both European nations at risk, an international squadron was assembled at Martin Garcia and sailed on 8th November (1845). Consisting of six British and five French ships, including three paddle-steamers, and commanded by Captain Charles Hotham, R.N., the force made slow progress and finally anchored two miles below Obligado on the 18th of the month. Ahead of it, the river was blocked by a powerful boom of twenty-four chained hulks and supported by shore batteries of field artillery. After reconnoitring the enemy positions and sounding the river, the allied squadron attacked on the morning of the 20th. In a fierce and protracted action which lasted much of the day, the boom was eventually breached in the early afternoon and three of the shore batteries silenced by nightfall. Losses on both sides were heavy however and the men of the Royal and French Navies acknowledged the skill of their adversaries. Back in Britain however, no medal was ever granted for the affair and it had faded into history alongside much better known conflicts elsewhere. The artist went to sea as a boy aged fourteen. In 1840, he took part in the naval operations on the Syrian Coast, and in 1845 he was promoted to the rank of Commander for his gallant conduct at Obligado. The subject matter of this painting must have been particularly memorable for the artist. In the Crimean War, Inglefield took part in the Siege of Sevastopol. He was knighted in 1877, and nominated a Knight Commander of the Bath ten years later. He was promoted Admiral in 1879. Besides being a marine artist of note, he was the inventor of hydraulic steering gear and the' Inglefield' anchor. We are grateful to Michael Naxton for his help in the cataloging of this lot.
