India General Service Medal 1854 with N.E.Frontier clasp named to 3954 Bugler J Clarke 4th Bn K.R.Rif.C. Born Shoreditch, London, with the trade of Musician. Also served WW1 with the Irish Guards. Twice noted in the Defaulters Book for being Drunk while outside Buckingham Palace (once while playing in the band !). VF (1)

DCM L/G 30/10/1918 citation reads 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was constantly walking about under intense artillery and machine gun fire in the open in the performance of his duty of keeping up communication with battalion headquarters and of keeping touch with units on the flanks. He was eventually severely wounded in the thigh and legs, but in spite of his injuries he managed to help to bring in a badly wounded officer. HMS Royal Oak - a superb group awarded to Rear Admiral William Gordon Benn Royal Navy. Medals mounted as worn - 1915 Star (Lieut W G Benn RN), BWM & Victory Medal (Lt. Commr W G Benn RN), MID to Victory Medal, 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, 1935 Jubilee Medal, 1937 Coronation Medal. Plus matching miniatures. Benn was Captain of the HMS Royal Oak at the time of its sinking by German Submarine U-47 on the night of 13/14 October 1939 with the loss of 834 crew. Captain Benn is recorded as "remaining in the ship until the last possible moment, until in fact the ship left him, and his behaviour was in the best traditions of the service". He was Mentioned In Despatches 17/5/1919 for services in the Mediterranean. With a very detailed set of copied service records. Born Bahia, Brazil.

Boxed Silver War Badge No B209305 awarded for Wounds. MM L/G 11 Oct 1916. MID L/G 17/2/1915. It appears he changed his name from Robert Howarth. Lot includes badges, and a 1918 diary. EF (4)
