MANOLO VALDÉS (Valencia, 1942)."Matisse as a pretext".Silkscreen on linen. Copy 90/100.Hand signed.Size: 148 x 122 cm.In an interview that the artist gave to the newspaper ABC in 2016, Valdés pointed out his artistic connection with Matisse, and his interest in the interpretation of his work. In addition, this same year he exhibited at the Marlborough Fine Art gallery in London, the show entitled "Recent Work. Paintings and sculptures", a selection of eleven works that paid homage to the artistic oeuvre of Henri Matisse. In fact, when the Valencian painter was interviewed about the exhibition, Valdés replied "I answer his paintings with other paintings". This work is a clear example of Valdés's response to the French artist, rescuing his odalisques and enveloping them in a pop aesthetic.Manolo Valdés introduced in Spain a form of artistic expression that combines political and social commitment with humour and irony. He began his training in 1957, when he entered the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia. However, two years later he abandoned his studies to devote himself fully to painting. In 1964 he founded the artistic group Equipo Crónica, together with Juan Antonio Toledo and Rafael Solbes, in which he remained until the latter's death in 1981, despite the fact that Toledo had left the group two years after its foundation. Since then he has settled in New York, where he currently lives and where he has continued to experiment with new forms of expression, including sculpture. Among the numerous awards Manolo Valdés has won are the Lissone and Biella awards in Milan, the silver medal at the II International Biennial of Engravings in Tokyo, the Bridgestone Art Museum prize in Lisbon, the National Prize for Plastic Arts, the medal at the International Festival of Fine Arts, the International Festival of Fine Arts in Paris, and the International Festival of Fine Arts medal at the International Festival of Fine Arts in Paris, among others, the medal of the International Festival of Plastic Artists of Baghdad, the Decoration of the Order of Andrés Bello in Venezuela, the prize of the National Council of Monaco, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, the Prize of the Spanish Association of Art Critics and the Prize for the Best Print Artist, among others. Formally, Valdés produces a large-format work in which the lights and colours express tactile values, due to the treatment given to the materials. His work forces the viewer to delve into memory and search for significant images from the history of art. He is represented in some of the world's leading museums, such as the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Metropolitan, the MoMA and the Guggenheim in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Fons National d'Arts Plastiques in Paris, the Kusnthalle in Hamburg, the Kunstmuseum in Berlin and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao, among many others.

MODEST CUIXART I TÀPIES (Barcelona, 1925 - Palafrugell, Girona, 2007)."Platonic evocation".Mixed media on paper.Signed and titled in the lower middle section.Size: 64 x 48 cm; 77 x 61 cm (frame).Cuixart initially studied medicine, but soon abandoned his studies to devote himself to painting and entered the Academia Libre de Pintura in Barcelona. In 1948 he took part in the founding of the group Dau al Set, together with Brossa, Ponç, Tàpies and Tharrats, among others. Concerned with the plastic value of the sign, his work has from the outset a strong kinship with surrealism, as well as a great sensitivity towards the expressive power of colour. Towards 1955 he immersed himself in material informalism. In 1959 he won first prize at the São Paulo Biennial and exhibited at the Documenta in Kassel, and the following year he took part in an exhibition of Spanish avant-garde works at the Tate Gallery in London and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. In the 1970s he exhibited in numerous national and international capitals, including Paris, Madrid, São Paulo, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Basel, Barcelona and Milan, among others. In the following decade, Cuixart gradually freed his painting from its aggressive aspects to give it a more lyrical tone. He also took part in a group exhibition at the Palais de l'UNESCO in Paris, was awarded the Cross of Saint George by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Cross of Isabella the Catholic. In 1988 he holds an anthological exhibition in Japan, in the cities of Kobe and Tokyo. He continues to work with exuberant colours and forms, and reincorporates a more material figuration into his work. In 1998 the foundation named after him was created in Palafrugell, and the following year he was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts by the Ministry of Culture. He is represented in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Tate Gallery in London, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the Contemporary Art Museums of Madrid, Barcelona and Saint-Etienne (France), the Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, the Museo de Grabado Español Contemporáneo in Marbella, the Museo de Arte de la Universidad de São Paulo, the Museo de Arte Abstracto in Cuenca and the Museo del Ampurdán, among many others.

SOLEDAD SEVILLA PORTILLO (Valencia, 1944)."Insomnio", Granada, 2001.Oil on canvas.Signed, dated, titled and located on the back.Measurements: 65 x 100 cm; 74,5 x 109 cm (frame).A Valencian artist based in Barcelona, Soledad Sevilla trained at the Sant Jordi Academy of Fine Arts, and later extended her studies in Madrid and at Harvard University. She began her exhibition career at the end of the sixties, within a minimalist language which she abandoned in the following decade after participating in the Seminar on Automatic Generation of Plastic Forms held at the Calculus Centre of the Complutense University of Madrid. From then on he developed a geometrically based painting, using the module and its infinite variations. The evolution of Sevilla's language began at the end of the sixties in the search for an alternative style to the informalism and expressionism prevailing in Spain at the time, approaching Normative Art, its serial forms, its chromatic purity and its atonalism, rejecting subjectivity. From this first stage, influenced by Malevich and marked by the search for a purely abstract spatial conception, the artist moved on to optical, perceptive and structural proposals following her time at the Centro de Cálculo and her contact with José María Yturralde and Jordi Teixidor in the seventies. He continued, therefore, within a modular language, although now with a purely rhythmic conception, thus approaching a lyrical, non-objective painting, combining the emotional and the rational. Following this path, in the mid-eighties Sevilla focused on the investigation of landscape, with cultural and experiential connotations, delving into the perception of reality through subtle wefts and grids. Around this time, he also began to create his first installations. By then, Sevilla already had an important exhibition career not only in Spain, but also in the United States, Europe and Latin America. However, from the eighties onwards, his presence will be constant in the most important galleries in Madrid and other Spanish cities, and he will also reach Africa, Japan... His most recent exhibitions include the solo show held in 2012 at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. Winner of the National Prize for Plastic Arts in 1993 and Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 2007, Seville is currently represented in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao, the Museo de Arte Abstracto in Cuenca, the IVAM in Valencia, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Künstmuseum in Malmö, the Marugame Hirai in Tokyo, the European Parliament and the Patrimonio Nacional, among other outstanding collections.
EDUARDO NARANJO (Monesterio, Badajoz, 1944)."Portrait of a girl", 1981.Oil on canvas.Signed and dated in the lower right corner.Measurements: 64 x 49 cm; 65 x 50 cm (frame). The eighties was a period of maturity and establishment in Eduardo Naranjo's career. It was at this time that the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Madrid awarded him the medal for his merits as a member of its board of directors for painting and a first monograph of the author was published. This portrait of a lady is a great example of this period, as we can appreciate the author's characteristic technical quality and his unmistakable aesthetic language, in which he treats realism from a dreamlike point of view. He shows before the spectator an image taken from everyday life, but distorting certain elements, thus enriching the image, an example of which is the background with a lake in the piece, and the large drawing on the stomach of a girl.Eduardo Naranjo began his artistic training in 1957 with his teacher Eduardo Acosta, and that same year he entered the Escuela de Artes y Oficios (School of Arts and Crafts). In 1960 he continued his studies at the Santa Isabel de Hungría School of Fine Arts in Seville, and a year later he moved to the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he completed his studies. After his academic period, Naranjo decided to move to Paris, where he became deeply acquainted with the work of Picasso and artists such as Matisse. His work is defined by the technical exploration of painting, although he has also worked with sculpture and in the field of scenography. In addition, between 1986 and 1991 he made a series of engravings for the book "Poeta en Nueva York" by Federico García Lorca. Eduardo Naranjo's artistic career includes important prizes and awards, such as the Luis de Morales de Badajoz prize (1974), the Medal of Extremadura (1991), the María de Salamanca National Engraving Prize of the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engraving (1994) and the Cross of Military Merit for his contribution to the Arts and the Army (1995). Throughout his career he has held solo exhibitions all over the world, and today he is one of the most sought-after living Spanish painters. In fact, his fame is international, being admired in countries as far away as China, where he has exhibited numerous times and has been invited to give master classes in Chinese universities. Today his work is divided between private international collections and numerous public museums, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Nagasaki Museum in Japan, as well as countless private collections, including the Masaveu Collection in Oviedo.
Holme CardwellA carved white marble group of a classical shepherd youthRome, mid 19th centurysigned Holme Cardwell Fecit, Roma and indistinctly dated on later stone rectangular plinththe figure 116cm high, the plinth 77cm high by 71cm wide by 48cm deepProvenance; The residual contents of Bixley Manor by instructions of the executors of Sir Timothy Colman KG. Holme Cardwell, a native of Manchester, attended the Royal Academy School in London in 1834. Probably aged 19 (although there is some uncertainty over his year of birth, his gravestone registers 20 May 1813), he was recommended to the school by Sir Francis Chantrey RA. Building a considerable reputation for himself, including a silver medal for a model in 1839, he left London for Paris in 1841 to study with David d’Angers (1788-1856). He probably stayed in Paris for three years, training at the Académie Royale, before moving to Rome. In the following years of his career, he was to move between Rome and London several times, settling primarily in Rome. Active within the milieu of British expatriate artists and sculptors in Rome, he acquired many admirers, including the renowned sculptor John Gibson RA (1790-1866). Cardwell exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1837 and 1856. He had a tendency for large or monumental marble groups, including the ‘colossal’ Good Samaritan (Roscoe, op. cit., p. 194), a figure of Sabrina, and a Cupid and Pan. The treatment of this neoclassical youth shows similarities to John Gibson, who was an admirer of Cardwell’s work and Joseph Gott, 1785-1860 both of whom were similarly working in Rome in the mid 19th century executing commissions for English aristocracy doing the Grand Tour. Joseph Gott in particular, was renowned for his realistic portrayal of dogs, most especially whippets and greyhounds, which he often incorporated into classical groups as in this charming composition in which an Arcadian shepherd leans languorously on a staff with a dog gazing wistfully up at his master.
