(MI.374/270; W&R.18, annotated 'probably by Abraham Vanderdort'), good very fine The original, now in the British Musuem, is the medal said to have been given to Archbishop Juxon by Charles I, when on the scaffold just prior to his execution. This piece is sold with a copy of the Spink Numismatic Circular, July/August 1988, in which the medal is discussed in an article by E. R. Nutbourne.

Wyon F below bust, rev. coat of arms supported by two winged horses, with outer legend, reading PRESENTED BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR GENERAL, signed A Wyon. SC., edge uninscribed, 51 mm., wt. 104.50gms. (Puddester 888.2), in original red leatherette box, brilliant uncirculated and extremely rare Lansdowne, formally Governor General in Canada, chose to retain the same design for his presentation medal after his appointment to India. The medal was probably struck in London by Pinches. In a plastic holder and graded by PCGS as Specimen 64.

K. Mackessack); bronze medal of Johann Strauss and an Elgin County Special Constable's badge, numbered 85, generally very fine (5) George Ross Mackessack was born in 1851, served in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, married 1901, later became a J.P. The shooting medal is to his son, Kenneth who was educated at Rugby, joined the Seaforth Highlanders from Sandhurst in 1923, and served in India, North West Frontier 1930-31, Palestine, Middle East and North Africa. He commanded the 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders as Lieutenant-Colonel, at the battle of El Alamein, was wounded and mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 1st January 1944). He was Military Attaché in Washington from 1943 to 1946 and retired in 1948 as Hon. Lieutenant-Colonel.

(Divo 539), extremely fine Major-General Sir John William Gordon, KCB (1805-1870), was the Inspector-General of Engineers and later commanded the Royal Engineers. He received this medal for his work on the British Pavilion at the Exhibition.

Salomon Maduro, a self-made man, was one of a small number of successful Jewish merchants trading in the Caribbean. The Company he founded still flourishes.

It was returned to its position on the Unter den Linden near the Humboldt University in 1980. The obverse legend on the second medal is taken from the Emperor's speech at Guildhall on 10 July 1891: 'My aim is above all the maintenance of Peace . . . '

(Reinecke 57), extremely fine St Isaac's Cathedral was built between 1818 and 1858, by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand, and was designed to accommodate 14,000 standing worshippers. In 1931 the Antireligious Museum was opened in the building, changing to a museum of history and art and of the Orthodox Church. Since 1990 religious services have been resumed.

USA, Assay Commission Medal, bronze medal, 1968, by Frank Gasparro and Edgar Z. Steever, bust of Albert Gallatin three-quarters r., rev. ANNUAL ASSAY COMMISSION, pound troy weight inscribed Bate of London, with three smaller weights, 57.5mm. ( JK.AC-112 [R7]), encased in Perspex holder, about mint state Albert Gallatin was Treasury Secretary 1801-1814. The weight depicted on the reverse was the standard for this weight, brought to the Mint in 1824. A label on the holder states: 'Only 36 of these minted. 28 were presented to the members of the annual panel of citizens, weighers, counters & assayers who checked the 4967 mint products. The other medals were presented to the Mint Bureau and other government officials.'
