A scarce Order of the Star of India and Order of the Indian Empire Medal Group to E. M. Gawne, comprising second type Companion of the Order of the Star of India, together with a second type Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire. Gawne was Chief Secretary to the Government of Madras, District Officer and with a seat on the Isle of Man.
Four various Zulu Knobkerrie collected by Lieutenant-Colonel Gawne, the first with two-tone hard wood spherical head, the haft with braided wire covering just beneath the head, swollen or flared foot, the second with shorter haft and wire binding at the midpoint, the third with smaller head, split, and longer lighter haft, the last with flattened, almost disc-shaped head, the haft with swollen or flared foot. By family tradition Lieutenant Colonel-Gawne was said to have acquired these spears during his service in the Zulu War of 1879 (Medal and clasp), however he did also serve on the Bechuanaland Expedition of 1884 and during the Boer War where he was wounded at Vryheid on the 11th of December 1900 and died of the following day, he was commanding the 2nd Bn the Royal Lancaster Regiment. A depiction of the moment of the Boer attack and the wounding of Gawne was depicted in the Graphic.
A selection of Zulu spears or Assegai collected by Lieutenant-Colonel Gawne, comprising eleven different examples, each with flattened diamond section leaf-shaped blades, some with elongated hafts, each mounted with hide or wire bindings on to wooden hafts, some also with hide or wire bound grip areas, three with swollen foot. Waterloo Medal to Anthony Planner, 32nd Regiment of Foot (Cornwall), Anthony Planner was born in Epsom, Surrey in 1778. He attested aged 15 years and 9 months in Bath Somerset. Signing on for unlimited service. He was wounded in action to the left arm at the Battle of Salamanca on the 22nd July 1812. Confirmed as being present at the Battle of Waterloo, serving in Captain Hugh Harrisons Company. The 32nd Foot where in the thick of the action. Starting the battle with a strength of 647, by the end only 131 men were left fit. With a hand written envelope / letter showing it was Planners wish upon his death in this year 1840, that the medal be left to Captain George Lempriere a well known South African Family. The suspender has been replaced but does not detract from the condition of the medal which has fantastic provenance. As featured on the Antiques Road show.

GERMAN ARMY OF WORLD WAR II: Selection of signed pieces, T.Ls.S., D.S., etc. by various individuals, in German, all to Franz Boehme (1885-1947) Austrian General in the Wehrmacht during World War II, Commander of the XVIII Mountain Corps, Plenipotentiary Commanding General in the Balkans, and commander-in-chief in German-occupied Norway. Boehme stood trial in Nuremberg and later committed suicide in prison. The selection including a typed letter from the Burgermeister's Office at Brandenburg, 19th July 1940, sending Boehme congratulations for his award of the Knight's Cross; two typed documents, from the NSDAP and NSV, Salzburg, October and November 1942, sent to Boehme, bringing local news for Salzburg party members serving at the front; a typed letter from Ortsgruppenleiter Mosel of the NSDAP, Salzburg, to Boehme, thanking him for the congratulations on being awarded the Blood Order Medal; a typed letter from Ortsgruppenleiter Mosel of the NSDAP, Salzburg, to Boehme, thanking him for the signed and inscribed photograph which will take pride of place in the NSDAP office; a signed Christmas greetings card, sent to Boehme, 24th December 1942, from seven members of the Head Quarters staff; a signed 'Get Well Soon' card, 1944, sent from the Commander of the 82nd Mountain Pioneer Battalion, accompanied by the envelope; a signed greeting card from four members of staff of GI (ops) to Boehme, congratulating him on the award of the Knights Cross (1940); a printed invitation to Boehme, requesting that he attend the Reich Party Day on 6th September 1938, at the Mitropa-dorf in Nurnberg, together with a travel timetable for the event; a hand written invitation from the Squadron Commander of 2.(H)/14 for Boehme to attend a dinner on 16th July 1940, signed by the Commander. Together with four signed pieces taken from military documents, including the signatures of Colonel Walter Uhrhahn, Colonel Metz and Colonel Helmuth Schultze; a rare British Prisoner of War Information Sheet, 6th January 1942, completed in German by Major Wilhelm von Gradl at Alexandria POW Camp etc. With a few with pencil annotations, and light age wear, generally G to VG, 18
[SUMPTER LEONARD]: (1911-1993) British Royal Air Force Flight Sergeant, a member of 617 Squadron who participated in Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid) as Bomb aimer of Lancaster ED929/G AJ-L, 16th-17th May 1943. A unique personal hardback 4to scrapbook, complied by Sumpter during his service with 617 Squadron, 1943-45, with a postcard photograph adhered to the cover, the image depicting a Lancaster in flight high above the English countryside, beneath a partially torn label stating '…J Sumpter. Navigator…'. The scrapbook containing 53 pages of various newspaper cuttings, original photographs, and a telegram, and numerous annotations in Sumpter's hand, including, 'R.A.F. Left huge fires raging in Berlin' (newspaper cutting, 18th January 1943, annotated 'This is a report on flight made with F/L Curry (Pilot), P/O Henderson (Nav), F/S Sumpter (Bomb Aimer), F/S Higgins (M/V), F/S Shepherd (W/OP), Sgt. Henderson (F/E), F/O Longden'); 'Ruhr Floods Arms Cities From Mined Dams' (newspaper cutting, 16th May 1943); a photograph of the Mohne Dam, above which Sumpter has written, 'Nets on Mohne Dam erected after repair to Dam. Taken April 47 by self'; a newspaper cutting entitled 'Dam raiders meet King', the final sentence of the article stating, in part, 'Their Majesties spoke to every Officer and N.C.O. in the squadron…', next to which Sumpter has written, 'This is a lie!'; a typed telegram to Sumpter, signed by Air Chief Marshal Arthur Harris, 23rd May 1943, the message stating, 'My warmest congratulations on the award of your Distinguished Flying Medal'; a newspaper cutting depicting bomb damage headlined, 'Bomb-Aimers view of RAF Target' (annotated 'February 8th '44' and 'Limoges'); newspaper cutting, 'First picture of our 5½-Ton bombs' havoc', with further newspaper photographs of the Limoges raid annotated 'Before' and 'After', and with two original photographs annotated 'Marker Bombs exploding on roof at Limoges (raid) factory' and 'Limoges. Taken during raid. By Flashbomb'; a newspaper cutting 'RAF pin-point 'Busters'on tyres centre', beneath, an original photograph depicts a bomb on its carriage, surrounded by ground staff, annotated, 'The 12,000lb bomb for blast effect. Bomb doors were removed for this bomb, also mid upper turret. Taken over the target. Only 5 crew carried, P-B/A-Eng-Rear Gunner-Nav'; newspaper headline 'Berchtesgaden hit by 12,000lb bombs', with a further press cutting (26th April 1945); a reprinted photograph depicting aircraft flying at high altitude, annotated, 'Armada on the way to Berchtesgaden 25.4.45'; a magazine photograph of Hitler's Berghof at Berchtesgaden, above which Sumpter has indicated the location of the Eagles Nest; a photograph (possible reprint) of the destruction of the Mohne Dam taken at ground level, written on the page below Sumpter reveals, 'Bought for 1 cigarette from a German on Mohne Dam. June 21st 1947'; a newspaper photograph depicting R.A.F. Bomb Disposal personnel examining three 'bouncing bombs' at Reculver, Kent (1980); a single page, being a hand written performance chart of Sumpter's navigational skills, with error rates stated for various tasks, including the comment, 'Sight analysis to date. Star sights taken on ground but wrong star used', written in Sumpter's hand, and signed by the course instructor, C.A. Johnson, dated 13th February 1942. With several pages neatly removed, the spine slightly loose, but with all pages firmly intact, and with age wear to the cover, otherwise GSumpter had already served two stints in the Grenadier Guards before transferring to the RAF in 1941. After training in England and Canada, he was posted to 57 Squadron at Scampton in September 1942. This book was evidently used during part of the initial training and this may account for the missing pages and the one remaining page from his time under instruction.
