See Illustration Footnote: Gilbert MacDonald was a serving officer on the Sabrina which formed part of the Scandinavian Convoy during the Great War. In an action off Norway on 12th December 1917 a sister ship, Pellew, was badly holed and sought temporary shelter in Bekkevig Sound. Sabrina was dispatched to her aid and during the course of the night a small team of six, led by Gilbert MacDonald, effected sufficient repairs to the stricken ship to enable her to return the following morning to Scapa Flow. The fact that this was accomplished in the teeth of a heavy north-west gale testified to the excellent work done. The medal group is sold with a photocopied account of the action as described in "Endless Story" by Tattrail (Captain Taprell Dorling). Also included is a photocopy of the relevant London Gazette supplement and a page from Sabrina's log, recording part of the action.
