He won the Formula 5000 championship in 1976 before returning to F1 and suffering multiple injuries in a 1977 British GP practice crash that all but terminated his racing career.

The tournament was revived after WW1 but only for 1920 & 1921, the last competition. Other English winners included Nunhead who rattled up a hat-trick of wins between 1910 and 1912, and before this Old Mancunians in 1907.

He signed as a professional footballer in June 1900 for Woolwich Arsenal, making his debut on 15th September 1900 against Burton Swifts, losing 1 - 0 on the day. Through his career with Woolwich Arsenal he made 303 appearances in eight seasons until 1908, of which 273 appearances were in the league. He was the first goalkeeper to play for Woolwich Arsenal in the first division and having played in two FA Cup semi-finals with Woolwich Arsenal in 1905/06 against Newcastle United, losing 2 - 0 at Victoria Ground, Stoke and 1906/07 against The Wednesday losing 3 - 1 at St Andrew's, Birmingham.Ashcroft was the first Arsenal player to be capped for England winning three caps in the British Home Nations Championship matches of 1906, England won twice against Ireland and Wales and lost to Scotland, which meant sharing the 1905/06 championship trophy with Scotland, both teams having each gained four points in the championship. In 1908 he was sold to Blackburn Rovers where he went onto play over 120 times and reached another FA Cup semi-final in 1910/11 against Bradford City, losing 3 - 0 at Bramall Lane, Sheffield and won the First Division title in 1911/12. In 1913 he was released by Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer, placing an advert in The Athletic News he signed for Tranmere Rovers, playing for one season before WWI and all first class football was halted and with that his retirement from football.

Ltd., TO COMMEMORATE THE WINNING OF PROMOTION, TO THE 1st. Div. OF THE ENGLISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE, SEASON 1921-22, A.J. MILNE, CAPT. Alexander James Milne was born in Hebburn, Tyneside 29th September 1889. The left back began his career in local amateur football for West Stanley and Hebburn Argyle before being signed by Stoke at the age of 23, making his debut in a Southern League fixture v West Ham United. Milne was known for his no-nonsense tackling and his solid performances at left back helped the club to gain a return to The Football League in 1914-15. However, Stoke did not play a League fixture until after World Wat One in season 1919-20. He became a stalwart of the side and was club captain during the 1921-22 season when Stoke City gained promotion to the First Division after finishing runners-up behind Nottingham Forest and ahead of Barnsley on goal ratio. Milne later suffered injury problems, missing the entire 1923-24 campaign. After making 276 appearances in all competitions for the "Potters", Milne joined Doncaster Rovers in 1926-27, retiring in 1929-30.

He served with the Durham Light Infantry and was active in the Normandy Landings. Post war he was centre-half for Matt Busby's team and was a key member in the 1951/52 league championship, the first league title in forty one years for Manchester United. In 1955 he went on to become player/manager for Grimsby Town, then as manager for both Wigan Athletic and Hartlepool United.

Setters was included in England's 1958 FIFA World Cup squad as a reserve player but did not travel and play in any matches. In 1960 he transferred from West Bromwich Albion to Manchester United for a fee of £30,000, Matt Busby signed Setters as a replacement for Wilf McGuinness and he went on to Captain Manchester United. He won a F.A. Cup winner's medal in 1963 and his final game with United was the 7-0 win over Aston Villa in season 1964/65. Setters was sold to Stoke City, and later had a spell with Coventry City.During the early 1970's Setters was manager for Doncaster Rovers, leading onto his assistant manager position under Jack Charlton with Sheffield Wednesday in 1977. Later assisting Charlton with the Republic of Ireland from 1986 to 1995, encompassing the most successful period of the countries footballing history, qualifying for a European Championship Euro '88 where Ireland beat England in the group stages 1 - 0 and two FIFA World Cups, 1990 World Cup in Italy reaching the quarter finals and 1994 World Cup in USA making the last 16.

Cup Final, the medal in 9ct. gold by Toye, Kenning & Spencer Ltd., hallmarked Birmingham 2010, inscribed THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, CHALLENGE CUP, RUNNERS-UP, the edge inscribed 1966-67, cased In 2010, and following a campaign by Lawrie McMenemy, The Football Association agreed to honour the managers who took their clubs to an FA Cup final but at the time did not receive a medal. The medals were presented by The League Managers Association at a gala dinner in London's Park Lane Hilton Hotel on 21st November 2010, with Jose Mourinho invited as a guest speaker. A total of 21 managers received either winner's or runners-up medals, or both. The list included Tommy Docherty, who won and lost at Wembley with Manchester United and was also a runner-up with Spurs in 1967. Other recipients included David Pleat, Terry Venables and many others. From 1996 managers joined the players and received medals on the day. McMenemy, who led the campaign, and was A F.A. Cup winning manager with Southampton in 1976, was quoted in the press as saying "I wrote to the FA asking them why and was told it was an occasion for the players. I replied, if that was the case why did the match officials receive medals? 'I was delighted when the F.A. agreed to give medals and mangers before and after 1996 are now equally delighted."

Queen Victoria 1897 Diamond Jubilee Gold Medal, the obverse designed by C.Emptmayer, after the portrait by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, the reverse with inscription 'In Commemoration of the 60th Year of the Reign of Queen Victoria 20 June 1897', 30mm diameter, total weight including suspension loop 31.6g. The 1897 Jubilee Medal followed the same design as the 1887 Golden Jubilee Medal, with only 73 being awarded, solely to members of The Royal Family. Clitter), Defence Medal and British War Medal 1939-45, mounted for wearing, together with a mounted set of corresponding Dress Miniatures, WWII Cap with RASC cap badge, Sam Browne belt, swagger stick, uniform buttons and associated photographs and ephemera including officer's commendation note for conspicuous gallantry, War Office letter dated 1918, telegram requiring attendance at Buckingham Palace dated 1918, etc (a lot) Note: Ernest Walter Clitter. Private 23rd Royal Fusiliers, commissioned 16th Middlesex Regiment. Serving with the 23rd Middlesex Regiment, Military Cross, London Gazette September 1918: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the death of his commanding officer this officer though wounded, took command of the battalion, and, by rallying scattered men and his untiring energy, maintained it as a fighting unit in touch with the rest of the brigade".

Casement, Royal Air Force, including Distinguished Service Order, G.VI.R., dated 1942; Distinguished Flying Cross, G.VI.R., dated 1941, with second award bar, dated 1942; Air Force Cross, G.VI.R., dated 1951; 1939-1945 Star; Air Crew Europe Star with France and Germany bar; Defence Medal; War Medal with Mentioned in Dispatches oak leaf; General Service Medal with clasps for Malaya and Palestine 1945 - 48, Mounted as worn, DSO with some damage to enamel, together with corresponding set of miniatures and a comprehensive archive of related material including all his flight log books, personal diaries and accounts, uniforms including greatcoat, five jackets, trousers, dress shirts, flying suit, boots and flying jacket, three caps, 'Helmets Ltd' helmet, photographs and personal items and gifts including hip flask, silver plate mounted cut glass jug, teddy bear mascot, tankard etc., (a lot) Group Captain Peter Reginald Casement was born in County Antrim in 1921 and educated at Marlborough College. His flying career began in 1939 when he learnt to fly Tiger Moths in Coventry; he undertook his first solo flight after just 11 hours and 30 minutes of training. He joined No 61 Squadron in 1941 and by the end of the war he had flown most of the aircraft used by the RAF at the time and was one of the few pilots to have seen service throughout WW2 - only 30 percent of aircrew who flew with Bomber Command survived. Peter took part in many strategically important missions during the war. On May 30 1942, flying with 61 Squadron, he piloted one of 73 Lancaster Bombers engaged in the first of Bomber Command's 'thousand bomber raids' on Germany. Later that year, during the Battle of the Atlantic he assisted in the destruction of a U-Boat. The bomber he piloted as Acting Flight-Lieutenant was the first to bring back photographic evidence of the sinking of a U-boat. These historic photographs plus his hand written descriptions are in an album included in the lot. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in October 1941, with the Bar in August 1942; the Distinguished Service Order followed in December 1942. The citation for his 1942 DSO states: 'Flight Lieutenant Casement is an outstanding captain and pilot. He has completed numerous operational missions, during which he has attacked highly important industrial targets in Germany; he has also completed several patrols over the Atlantic and assisted in the destruction of a U-boat'. After the war Peter was posted to Amman in the Middle East, returning to the UK in 1948 to continue his RAF career in St Eval, Cornwall and at Joint Service Defence College Latimer, Buckinghamshire. Appointed to the rank of Wing Commander, the youngest in the RAF at the time, he served in Cyprus during the Suez Crisis. His later career included stints at RAF Binbrook, working back home in Northern Ireland where he was attached to HMS Sea Eagle, working with Nato Submarines and RAF Mountbatten in Plymouth. Peter ended his career as Station Commander of RAF Topcliffe in Yorkshire in 1966. The final sentence of his 1942 DSO citation comments: 'Throughout his operational career, this officer has displayed great efficiency and devotion to duty which have proved a source of encouragement to his fellow captains'. When Peter retired in 1968, he had flown 3,800 hours in 27 different aircraft.
The National Pony Society, a silver medal by Mappin & Webb, hallmarked Birmingham, 1930, depicting a group of four horses and ponies standing by trees, the reverse with a polo player on horseback, inscribed "Mr William Jackman's Butter Scotch (Y.S.Rp.90) Hertfordshire, 1¾in (4.5cm) diameter, with original red leather case. Provenance: from The Pamela Schneider Collection; Mrs. Schneider was a well known jewellery dealer in the Bath Antiques Market from 1960s to 1990s, this is from her personal collection.
