A model of a Penzance Lugger, PZ 207, length approx 100cm.This Lot comes with a letter from the family written many years ago it reads briefly as follows: the model of the lugger was built by John Blewett in the late 19th century. He was a boat builder in Newlyn. He made two models of the boat. One he entered into a national competition and was awarded a medal (silver?). The model is in the science museum in Kensington, we saw it there on display in August 1950 the model in your possession (Lot 185) is the second copy it was salvaged by your Great Uncle John James when he and auntie Grace were cleaning out her family home large fish cellars he gave it to your father who was going to restore it. In 1950 Peter and I retained a copy of some drawings of the structure of the vessels and sales of these, Freddy refurbished the boat and sales with advice from Peter Hosking. They were dyed in coffee. Years later I borrowed the boat to illustrate a talk by Mr Jack Pender given to Mousehole old Cornwall society. He was one of the last serving men to sail on Luggers as a boy your own Great Grandfather Thomas James sailed on a fishing boat to Ireland at the age of 9 years etc and weather blowing a gale.. I left the boat in the care of Mr Penders son who was for many years a fisherman on his family boat but was also a fully trained carpenter but didn’t really take in the fact from me and his father that the Lugger lasts knot step and did a delicate job re-tying the mast etc Freddy used the name of Grandad Tommy's boat 'Fiona' and number for sentimental sake, the Fiona was sold onto and converted into a yacht.
