A Crimea Light Brigade medal group of three to Sergeant John Thornton 8th Hussars, comprising Crimea medal, officially impressed, with Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann and Sebastopol clasps, India Mutiny medal with Central India clasp, and Turkish Crimea medal (Sardinian Issue, depot impressed and replacement swivel bar)He was severely wounded on August 14th 1858, when Roberts defeated Tantia Topi at Bunass River. The 8th Hussars had one man killed and two sergeants and 10 men wounded in this action, also known as Kattara. Thornton died at Meerut on July 21st 1861 - believed from cholera. Sold with copied roll entries confirming all four Crimean clasps and copied muster roll entries. Thornton is not positively confirmed as a charger at Balaklava but it is confirmed that he was with the regiment throughout the relevant period. Provenance: Lot 176 DNW 17th & 18th May 2016

MOTHERWELL FOOTBALL CLUB INTERESTan early 20th century gold medal awarded to Willie Rankin, an 'inside right' who played for Motherwell FC from 1917- 1924. This medal was awarded to the player during a tour of Canada in 1921. Inscribed in relief 'Dominion of Canada Football Association', engraved '1921', verso further engraved 'Scots Canadian Football Tour, Presented to W Rankin by D MacNeil for 1st goal scored in Canada (1921)', stamped 10k, 12.13g, with original boxNoted on the Motherwell FC website: "Signed from Parkhead Juniors, in the 1920s this Inside Right was a modest goal scorer. Largely acting as provider for Hughie Ferguson. His cultured style however, was nurtured by manager John 'Sailor' Hunter and when he left the club some thought he was the best player they had ever seen at Fir Park. Willie Rankin gained several league caps but never a full international for Scotland."

The 1894 Football Association FA Challenge Cup winners medal, yellow metal marked 18ct.Player biography: Toone started his junior career with Nottingham Jardines FC and then Notts Rangers FC. In 1889 he joined Notts County FC and then moved to Bedminster FC in 1900 before returning to County for his final year making his last appearance on 4th January 1902.Club Honours included 1890-91 FA Cup runners up, 1893-94 FA Cup winners and Football League Division Two winners 1896-97.Toone also represented England, on the 5th March 1892 at Wrexham when England won 0-2 and on 2nd April 1892 at Ibrox when England won 1-4.
