A Group of WWI Medals and Miniatures awarded to Captain W O Watson of The Royal Artillery, to include the Victory Medal, 1914-18 Medal, 1914 Star with bar for 5th Aug/22nd Nov 1914, a military MBE and a Military Cross with dispatches, leaves. This lot also contains various papers, certificates, etc referring to his career. William Watson joined the army and was commissioned in the Royal Artillery in 1913, he was sent with his battery to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force and served there throughout the war. He was promoted to Colonel just before WWII while at the Directorate of Tank Design, was sent to Australia to help design and produce their own tanks, returning in 1943 to become the first director of Tank Armourment Research. He retired in 1947.

CRIMEAN WAR, PAIR Crimea Medal three clasps, Alma, Inkermann and Sebastopol, privately engraved SURGEON S S DOWSE 30TH FT and Ottoman Empire Order of the Medjidie 5th Class Order of the Medjidie 5th Class: Supplement to the London Gazette, 2 March 1858, p1266. Surgeon Richard Robert Dowse (1816-1859) was appointed Surgeon 30th Foot (by exchange from 13th Foot) on 2 December 1853 and appointed Surgeon 70th (Surrey Regt of) Foot on 18 January 1859, only three weeks before his death. Buried at Multan, India, his headstone is recorded as having been inscribed "Sacred to the memory of Richard Robert Dowse Surgeon HM 70 Regiment who departed this life on the 14 February 1859 on route to Mooltan aged 42 years. His remains were interred the following day in the burial ground of Mooltan." Provenance: The recipient, thence by direct descent to the present vendor.

QPM GROUP OF NINE TO A CHIEF CONSTABLE, Order of St John Officer`s silver and enamel breast badge, Queen`s Police Medal for Distinguished Service HAROLD H SALISBURY CH CONST YORK & N.E. YORKS POLICE, 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, Coronation Medal 1953, (replacement) Police LS&GC Medal (CONST. HAROLD F PARRIS) Harold Hubert Salisbury (1915-1991) was born in Worcestershire and after joining the Metropolitan Police in the1930s served in the Fighter Squadron of the Fleet Air Arm during World War II. He was Chief Constable of York and North East Yorkshire Police from 1968. In 1972 he was appointed Commissioner of Police in South Australia. The 1970s were years social and political change in Australia and Salisbury nailed his colours to the mast in a speech where he said "Once you accede to political pressure, both sides have got you." He found the police force beset by one scandal after another and he was summarily dismissed by the Government in 1978. During his six years in Australia his achievements included a notable improvement in Aboriginal relations, the formation of the police dog squad and measures to improve traffic safety. Salisbury retired to his native Worcestershire.

1783 (17 December) English Grammar School Grafton Street Dublin prize medal for writing A white metal circular medal, obverse engraved with the words English Grammar School Grafton Street Dublin" reverse decorated with crossed quills and the initials J.T. between a wreath and with the words "Desert Obtains The Prize, Vive La Plume, Writing". Engraved on the rim "Saml. Whyte Exar. Ajudged And Gave It To Joseph Turner Decr. 17 1783 No. 36". The school, later known as "Whyte`s Academy", was located at what is now Bewleys Coffee House and alumni included Robert Emmet, Arthur Wellesley, Richard Brinsley Sheridan and Thomas Moore. Rare. P Measurements: 1.5 by 1.5in., 3.75 by 3.75cm.
