M.B.E. (British Empire medal) in original presentation case together with a pair of WWI General Service medals awarded to 3446 Sergeant D E Davis, 15th London Regiment and his WWII Service medal and two others (See Lot 186 re: a large quantity of love letters written by the same person and Lot 187 for a large collection of diaries). M.B.E. awarded 1941 New Year Honours List invested Buckingham Palace in 1942.
Five: Royal Victorian Medal, Ed. VII type in bronze (un-named), in case; BWM, Victory (178119 A J Dees, C.P.O. RN), Naval LS & GC, Geo V Admiral’s bust (C.P.O HMS Excellent), Defence medal, GVF. Together with 3 HM silver shooting medals 1909-11 named to A. Dees and a most interesting bound length of pennant, old label attached states “Commissioning and Paying Off Pennant of the last Commission of “HMS Vindictive” previous to her going over to Zeebrugge” and on the reverse “12th Dec 191- (worn), Birkenhead, Hauled down by C.P.O Dees”, appears GC for age. Plate 1 Note: Vindictive paid a major part in the Zeebrugge raid of April 1918. She was to attack the Mole guarding Zeebrugge Canal and land Marines and sailors, however, a smokescreen was ineffective due to a change in the wind direction and Vindictive came under intense fire before finally returning to Dover. The following month it was decided to use Vindictive again, this time as a blockship at the raid at Ostend and sunk in the canal entrance.
