Indian Mutiny Medal Awarded to an Officer in the 27th Native Infantry, Who Later Committed Suicide Whilst Depressed in 1873, medal with clasps Central India and Lucknow, “LT R.D. THORPE, 27TH MADRAS N.I.”Robert Doveton Thorpe was born on 25th August 1843 in Fort St. George. He entered the service of the Honourable East India Company on 26th November 1856 as a Cadet in the Madras Infantry having been recommended by his father, Colonel Thorpe of the Madras Infantry. He saw service during the Mutiny with the 27th Madras Native Infantry and his medal with 2 clasps in confirmed on the Regimental roll. He married on 18th December 1861 but sadly his wife died on 1st May 1862.Captain Thorpe committed suicide whilst under great mental depression on 17th September 1873 just 2 days after he had written his will.

Fine Punjab Medal 1848-49 Awarded to a Captain in the 49th Bengal Native Infantry, medal with clasp Mooltan, impressed naming, “CAPTN. C.S. REYNOLDS, 49TH BENGAL N.I.”Born on 6th September 1817, Charles Sheppard Reynolds from Withycoombe Raleigh in Devon applied to be a Cadet in the Bengal Infantry on 15th November 1837. Commissioned as Ensign on 21st December 1837. Promoted to Captain 23rd June 1847 he was present at the siege of Mooltan and the award of the medal and clasp is confirmed on the Bengal Army Europeans roll.On 27th June 1852 he took civil employment as a Principal Assistant (1st Class) to the Commissioner of Assam. Charles Sheppard Reynolds died on 15th January 1853 at Tezpur in Assam at the age of 35 leaving behind a wife and 5 children.

New Zealand War 1845-1866 Medal to a Quarter Master in the 65th (2nd Yorkshire, North Riding) Regiment, reverse dated 1847 to “1865, QR. MR. JOHN PURCELL 65TH REGIMENT”. The medal roll for the 65th Regiment shows Private John Purcell active in the Wanganui campaign in 1847, he is shown as a Serjeant Major in the Taranaki campaign 1860/61 and as a Quarter Master in the Waikato campaign 1863/4/5. Along with his 5 children he returned to England on the ship Rob Roy on the 7th November 1865 when the Regiment was returned to England after 19 years’ service in New Zealand. He is noted as becoming non effective 22nd March 1870.

An Interesting Zulu War Medal to the Royal Navy, Awarded to a Sailor Who Was Court Martialled and Jailed During his Time on HMS Boadicea, The Ship on Which he Qualified for his Medal, South Africa medal 1877-79, engraved naming, “G.C. BATEMAN, ORD H.M.S. BOADICEA”, medal with ornate pin back ribbon bar.George Charles Bateman was born in Pimlico on 6th November 1858. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd class on 13th November 1873. He served on Boadicea from 18th April 1878 to 1st June 1879 and then from the 2nd December 1879 to 20th January 1880. His service record indicates he was sent for Court Martial and spent 6 months in jail. His medal was 1 of 249 no clasp medals issued to H.M.S. Boadicea and was sent to him on 14th January 1882 on board H.M.S. Forester.George Bateman was discharged dead due to typho-malarial fever on 19th August 1889 at Port Blain.

South Africa 1877-79 (Zulu War) Medal 2nd Battalion 4th Foot, Kings Own Regiment, medal with clasp 1879, engraved naming “2442 PTE R ROBERTS 2/4TH FOOT”.Robert Roberts a 21 year old Quarryman from Llanfidd originally enlisted into 23rd Foot in October 1876 at Bala. He transferred to the 2/4th Foot in December 1878 which is when the Regiment embarked for South Africa arriving in January 1879. Initially based in Pietermaritzburg, they later moved to Helpmakaar. The companies of the Battalion were distributed in reserve over a wide area. Roberts returned to the United Kingdom in 1883 for discharge having served 6 years and 95 days. On discharge he planned to return to Wales giving his intended address as Red Lion Street Carnarvon.Medal and clasp are confirmed on the roll, 999 medals were issued to the Regiment of which 971 were with the 1879 clasp

PATTERSON 72ND HIGHLANDERS”.Medal confirmed on the roll (1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders) also entitled to a 3-clasp Afghanistan medal (clasps Charasia, Kabul and Kandahar). Roll shows that Joseph Patterson died of disease 17th October 1880

Queen Victoria Royal Presentation Victorian Royal Marine Long Service Medal Group of Three, consisting of Egypt medal 1882-89 (dated reverse) with 3 clasps, Tel-el-Kebir, Suakin 1885 and Tofrek, engraved naming “SGT.MAJ: J. BURTENSHAW , R.M.L.I.”, Khedives Star 1882, unnamed as issued, Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct medal VR, engraved naming “JN BURTENSHAW COLR SERGT 44TH CO. R.M.L.I.”Medals mounted as worn on a pin back bar, catch hook is broken. With matching set of period mounted miniature medals, top clasp in Egypt miniature is spelt ‘To Frik’ (which matches the spelling on the medal roll).John Burtenshaw enlisted in the Royal Marines on 14th October 1862, promoted to Corporal on 1st June 1864, Sergeant in April 1869 and Colour Sergeant on 12th October 1874. He was Acting Sergeant Major on the Island of Ascension between January 1879 and September 1881 and went on to serve in the 1882 Egypt campaign being present at the actions at Malhalla, Kassassin and Tel-el-Kebir. He was Sergeant Major to the Royal Marine Force employed on special police duties in Dublin in 1882-83. Promoted to Quartermaster on 4th July 1883, Honorary Captain in July 1893 and Honorary Major on 23rd July 1897. He retires on 14th June 1899 but in in November 1900, at the age of 58,he was Recruiting Staff Officer in Glasgow. John Burtenshaw died on 9th November 1920 at Chatham. The Egypt medal and all 3 clasps are confirmed on the medal roll as is the issue of the Khedives Star. His service record confirms the issue of all 3 medalsThe Egypt medal roll has a note stating that the medal with Tel-el-Kebir clasp was ‘Presented at Windsor by Her Majesty 21 Novr. 1882’.

Lot also includes an enamelled badge for The Rhodesia Pioneers & Early Settlers Society 1890-1896 manufactured by Fattorini.This medal was authorised by Army Order 96 of July 1897 for all those connected with the operations in the provinces of Matabeleland and Mashonaland, known as Southern Rhodesia, between 24th March and 31st December 1896. 154 medals were issued to the unit.

Victorian Medal Group of Three Awarded to an Officer in the Leicestershire Regiment Who Was Twice Mentioned in Despatches for his Service in the Boer War, India General Service medal 1854 with clasp Burma 1887-89, engraved naming in running script, “LIEUT F.H. GLOSSOP 2ND BN LEIC. R.”, Queens South Africa medal with 4 clasps, Talana, Defence of Ladysmith, Laing’s Nek and Belfast, engraved naming, “MAJOR F.E. GLOSSOP LEIC: REGT.”, Kings South Africa medal, engraved naming, “MAJOR F. E. GLOSSOP LEIC RGT.” Note different initial on I.G.S. Group mounted as worn on pin with matching set of period mounted miniature medals. Francis Edward Glossop was born in Twickenham on 25th April 1866. He gained his certificates in law and riding from the Royal Military College and commenced his military career in January 1886. Promoted to Captain in 1894 he was promoted to Major on 29th November 1901. IGS and clasp are confirmed on the roll as is the QSA and clasps Talana, Defence of Ladysmith and Laing’s Nek but unfortunately the section of the roll showing the Belfast clasp entitlement is not legible but medal appears to be as issued, KSA and both clasps is also confirmed on the roll. He was mentioned in despatches twice for the Boer War, 2nd February 1901 in General Buller’s despatch and 10th September in Earl Roberts despatch.He married in Richmond on 1st October 1902 and finally retired from the Regiment in December 1909. He and his wife moved to Canada and Francis Edward Glossop died on 11th December 1932 on Vancouver Island British Columbia, Canada.

SUMPTON KIMBERLEY T.G.”, small edge knock at 6 o’clock position, accompanied by a Mayor of Kimberley’s Star medal, reverse hallmark with date letter ‘b’, unnamed as issued.Shown on the roll as ‘not enrolled’ and that he was constantly employed on searchlights. Roll confirms the issue of a no clasp medal.

Invalided back to England on 11th February 1857 he died on 13th July 1857.Confirmed on the roll for the medal and both clasps. 1060 Chilianwala clasps issued to the Regiment and 694 Goojerat clasps.

BUTTERFIELD DURHAM L.I.”William Butterfield from St. Marys, Gateshead attested for the Durham Light Infantry on 21st May 1901. He served in South Africa from 1st February 1902 until 2nd October 1902. Medal and both clasps are confirmed on his service record.

Accompanied by an enamelled pin back commemorative medallion for the Transvaal War 1899-1900.George Archain Till from Macclesfield enrolled into the 1st Battalion Railway Pioneers on 28th December 1899. Discharged as medically unfit on 6th September 1900 having served for 253 days. Medal and all 3 clasps confirmed on the roll.

Queens South Africa Medal to Scott’s Railway Guard, medal with three clasps, Cape Colony, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902, awarded to “1854 TPR: M. MYERS. SCOTT’S RLY: GDS:”Confirmed on the roll for Cape Colony clasp only. Medal has a single scratch line on the edge through the initial and surname.

Queens South Africa Medal Rifle Brigade, medal with three clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State and South Africa 1902, awarded to “4373 PTE E SCANLON RIFLE BRIGADE”. Medal with dark patina but heavily polished to the obverse and reverse. Ernest Scanlon, enlisted for service in 1895, he served with the Rifle Brigade in South Africa from 1902. Papers show entitlement to the QSA with three clasps. He continued to serve with the Rifle Brigade and was sent to France in 1916. He was discharged in 1917 after serving his time in the colours.

Royal Engineers Queens South Africa & Volunteer Long Service Medal Pair to the Newcastle Royal Engineers Volunteers, Queens South Africa medal with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast, South Africa 1901, engraved naming, “5846 SAPR. T. G. DALTON R.E.”, Volunteer Long Service medal EVII, “2059 SAPR T.G. DALTON. 1/NEWCASTLE R.E.V.” Top clasp on QSA fitted by unofficial rivets. All 6 clasps confirmed on relevant rolls and on service record.Thompson Gowland Dalton, born in 1870 in Westgate, Newcastle, was a Bricklayer by trade and was a serving volunteer in the 1st Newcastle Royal Engineers Volunteers. He enlisted on a Short Service enlistment into the Royal Engineers on 18th January 1900 giving his address as 14 Moor Street, Newcastle. He served in South Africa between 10th March 1900 and 17th May 1901. His Volunteer Long Service medal is confirmed in Army Order January 1909. During the Great War he was embodied for military service and served at home between 5th August 1914 and 27th April 1917, not entitled to any medals for his Great War service.

Boer War and Militia Long Service Pair of Medals Durham Light Infantry, Queens South Africa medal with 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State and South Africa 1901, “6933 BUGR. W. HESLOP DURHAM LT INFY”, with a Militia Long Service and Good Conduct medal EVII, “6933 BGLR. W. HESLOP 3RD DURHAM L.I. MIL.”William Heslop from originally from Limerick, Ireland attested for the Durham Militia as a Boy at the age of 12 giving his address as Barnard Castle. Appointed Bugler in May 1865 he kept this rank until his discharge on 13th January 1908 having reached the age limit. He served in South Africa with the 3rd Battalion between 11th January 1900 and 11th June 1901. The QSA with 3 clasps is confirmed on the roll and there is a reference to a medal presentation by His Majesty the King at Marlboro on 29th July 1901. The Award of the QSA and the Militia Long Service medal is confirmed on his discharge certificate.William Heslop died at the age of 91 on 5th January 1943

R.W. MCKAY, 1ST NTHLD:VOL:ART:”, 1914-15 Star medal, “1212 DVR. R.W. MACKAY, R.F.A.”, British War and Victory medals, “403209 2 A.M. R.W. MACKAY R.A.F.”, Territorial Force Efficiency medal EVII, “77 CPL. R.W. MCKAY 1/NTH’BN B. R.F.A.” Ghost dates present on Q.S.A., all clasps confirmed on the relevant rolls. Note differences in spelling of surname.Territorial Force Efficiency medal – Army Order 255, 1st October 1910.Robert William McKay was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1873. Served in Boer War in the Elswick Battery, 1st Northumberland Volunteer Artillery. During the Great War he served in France with the Royal Field Artillery from 17th April 1915 before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps on 28th June 1917 and the Royal Air Force on 1st April 1918. Discharged from service on 30th April 1920.

A Scarce Double Issue Pair of Medals for Service in the Boxer Rebellion, China War medal 1900, “W.J. DEAN LG SMN., HMS HERMOINE” and China War medal 1900, “GNR: W.J. DEAN SHANGHAI VOLS”. Lot includes an original Royal Navy parchment Certificate of Service, information is very limited but does show the recipient being discharged to shore at Shanghai on 3rd July 1900William James Dean was born on 4th July 1870 in Stoke Damerel, Devon. He joined the Navy on 22nd December 1885 as a Boy 2nd Class on HMS Lion with service number 135720.Promoted to Petty Officer 1st Class in April 1895, he was back to an Able Seaman rating on 13th December 1897, his record does not indicate why this happened. His full service record shows him being discharged on 4th July 1900 and he must have then enlisted in the Shanghai Volunteer Corps.W J Dean is confirmed on the China medal roll for HMS Hermoine with a note indicating that the medal was sent to Shanghai on 8th July 1902. Gunner W J Dean is also present on the medal roll of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps entitled to a medal without clasps.

An Unusual Pair of Victorian Campaign Medals 60th Rifles for Service in the Third Kaffir War and in the 2nd China War, South Africa medal 1834-53 impressed naming, “THOS. DEVERILL, 2ND BTN 60TH RIFLES”, contact marks and wear to both ends of the naming, suspension post loose, Second China War Medal 1856-60, impressed naming “THOS.DEVERILL, 2ND BN 60TH RIFLES”, contact marks and wear to naming.Thomas Deverill enlisted into 60th Rifles in Nottingham on 6th February 1851 with the service number 2838 and embarked for South Africa in July/September of the same year on ‘The Sidou’. He is present on the roll for the South Africa medal (there are 2 men of this name on the roll). In April to June 1852, he returned from patrol and into hospital. He left South Africa in September to go to India and in February to April 1860 the Regiment moves from India to China on the ‘Hougomont’. He is confirmed on the roll for the China medal with the 2 clasps. In September 1861 he returns to England and re-engages at Winchester. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct medal in April 1869. Thomas Deverill died in Bombay on 28th February 1871.

Victorian Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct medal to the Coast Guard, Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct medal VR, “WM. AGLAND, BOATN. H.M. COAST GUARD”William Agland was born on 13th September 1867 in Beer, Devon. He commenced his Naval service as a Boy 2nd class on Impregnable on 1st February 1883 with service number 122253. He transferred to the Coast Guard on 21st March 1896 and was awarded his Long Service medal on 23rd January 1901. Continued his Coast Guard service until his discharge in March 1919, he spent the Great War serving at home and is entitled to a British War medal.

COAST GUARD”.George Frederick Meillear from Plumstead, Kent, was born on 17th October 1858. He joined the Navy on 29th December 1873 with service number 84655, he transferred to the Coast Guard in August 1887. Long Service medal was awarded on 8th April 1895 being discharged from the service on 15th July 1897. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve in July 1902 finally leaving the service on 17th October 1908.

COAST GUARD”Born on 16th November 1849 in Hyde Park Road, Landport, Portsea, James Matthew Briggs entered the Royal Navy with service number 50442 as a Shipwright on 1st January 1873. Served on Lord Warden, Revenge and Devastation where he was appointed Carpenter’s Mate in May 1876. Transferred to the Coast Guard as Divisional Carpenter in August 1879 when he was based at Rye in Sussex. Pensioned off in August 1890

Victorian British Major Generals Mess Dress Tunic, fine example of a scarlet short pattern mess jacket with fine brocade to the centre and around the waist, shoulder straps with brocade and General officers button, shoulder straps having bullion crossed sword and baton with star above. To the breast are medal ribbons for Victorian campaign service including the Indian Mutiny. Accompanied by the interior waistcoat. Set remains in generally good condition for its age.

WW1 American 3rd Infantry Division Tunic and Steel Combat Helmet, an interesting example of a British made American 1917 pattern four pocket combat tunic. To the arm is original divisional patch, honourable discharge stripe and overseas service stripes. To the breast is a state of New York service medal for WW1. US and Infantry collar discs and American eagle buttons. Interior has the remains of the paper issue label and British WD arrow mark. The helmet is a standard American issue combat helmet with the textured finish to the exterior. Painted 3rd Infantry division sign to the front. Complete with its oilskin liner and leather chinstrap. Overall a good honest set.

Nationally Important Full Uniform of Maharaja His Highness Mohan Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana of Nepal GCB, GCIE, GBE, Prime Minister and Supreme Commander in Chief of Nepal 1885-1967, superb quality double breasted scarlet full dress uniform with dark blue facings. The collar and cuffs are heavily embroidered with gold wire decoration. Officers gilt linked and silver (not hallmarked) undress shoulder scales and twist cord dress aiguillettes still accompany the tunic. Fine quality gilt metal officers tunic buttons to the uniform. The breast has a variety of medal / award loops for breast orders awarded. Fine quality quilted padded lining to the interior of the tunic. Accompanied by the matching full dress trousers in green cloth with thick red stripe to the leg. Superb pair of officers full dress epaulettes also accompany the uniform set, with silver and gilt insignias applied. Waist sash with brass clip mount and knot tassels. Rare solar topee helmet of cork construction with green cloth covering. Impressive large central rayed helmet plate with central face and applied wreath enclosing crossed silver Kukris with crescent moon and sun above. Crimson silk pagri to the helmet. Interior retains the original leather sweatband with gilt tooled tailors / retailers details of “Messrs Ranken & Co Ltd Calcutta & Simla”. Leather backed linked brass chin chain. With the helmet is the original full dress plume of yellow feathers over red and housed in the japanned tin of issue. Overall a superb grouping that is unique and of historical and national importance to Nepal. Maharaja His Highness Mohan Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana of Nepal GCB, GCIE, GBE, was born in 1885 to the Rana family who were the rulers of Nepal at this time. He was the last of the Rana family to be Prime Minister and ruler of the country. His family had ruled Nepal for over a century and had reduced the monarchy to just a figurehead, but at the time of his rule, the current monarch King Tribhuvan was attempting to assert himself. There was civil unrest during his time in charge and the king was forced to exile himself in India until a treaty was signed some years later. By the end of 1951, Rana had lost power in Nepal and he put himself into self-imposed exile in India, where he died in Bangalore in 1967. This uniform set was originally sold in Wallis and Wallis auctioneers in the late 1980’s, a letter of provenance from the then owner is included in the lot.

His son, also called Benjamin Forbes, was born in 1887 and was a Carpenter & Joiner by trade and is entitled to a pair only for his Great War service. His home address is listed as De Grey Street, Newcastle and he appears to have been hospitalised twice during his service in April and November 1918

Attributed WW1 British ‘Ideal’ Officers Water Bottle Carried by Captain Philip Henry Reiss Jephson During his Service with 8th (Service) Battalion, The East Surrey Regiment and Later with The Machine Gun Corps, fine example of this private purchase type water bottle with its canvas cover and leather harness strap. His name is inscribed in ink on the cloth cover under the leather strap on the side of the bottle. Remains in generally good condition. Accompanied by a file of biographical details including his military service, and his Medal Index Card from the National Archive, acquired from the internet. The unit War Diary of the 8th Bn East Surrey Regiment is available to download from The National Archives at Kew. HOAD ACT. LG. CKS. MTE. H.M.S. PHILOMEL”, 1914-15 Star medal, “346989 W.V. HOAD, SH.CK., R.N.”, British War and Victory medals, “346989 W.V. HOAD CH. SH. CK. R.N”, Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct medal GV (1st type), “346989 W.V. HOAD C.P.O. COOK H.M.S. GLORY.”William Victor Hoar was born in Portsea, Hampshire on 14th June 1886 and entered the Royal Navy as an Acting 2nd Class Cook’s Mate on 19th September 1904. He is confirmed on board Philomel for the Somaliland campaign of 1908-10 and on 1st September 1912 was promoted to Ships Cook whilst at Victory I. He served all bar the last 6 months of the Great War on H.M.S. Superb and was on board during the Battle of Jutland where she fired a total of 54 12-inch shells. Promoted Chief Ships Cook on 1st July a1916 and Chief Petty Officer Cook on 17th May 1919. Pensioned to shore on 18th September 1926. Mobilised on 28th September 1938 he was demobilised a week later on 3rd October 1938. William Victor Hoad died on 25th August 1949 in Chichester, West Sussex
