Badge. 72nd Highlanders Crimean War Period, Attributed Officer’s cased silver plaid brooch. A superb and rare example worn by Lieutenant The Honourable A. T. Fitzmaurice. Made by Lambert & Rawlings, Jewellers 12, Coventry Street, of the pattern introduced in 1852. Silver quoit engraved with Ducal Crown resting on “Hindoostan” scroll, thistle wreath,; to the base another scroll inscribed “Cape of Good Hope” with “ATF” monogram beneath. The centre set with a facetted glass foiled citrine, this can be removed for wear in undress. Retaining stout double pin fixing to reverse. Housed in its original fitted red leather case with domed lid. VGC Lieutenant The Honourable A. T. Fitzmaurice born 23rd Jan 1838 at Taplow, commissioned Ensign 1853 and advanced to Lieutenant the following year. Served in Eastern campaign in 1855 including expedition to Ketch, Siege of Sevastopol and attack of 18th June. Received Crimea Medal with clasp Sevastopol. Died 19th June 1894 aged 60.

Medals loose. Information supplied by the vendor indicates that AC1 Leek served in Palestine with 33 Squadron which at that time operated the Gloster Gladiator aircraft.

Information supplied by the vendor indicates that Corporal Rigby served in Borneo with Army Air Corps Flight 4 Lt Regt RA Sarawak and in Malaya with Air Troop 45 Lt Regt RA Malacca W. Malaysia. During service in Cyprus with Army Air Corps Flight UNFICYP Nicosia. This information is not confirmed by Bosleys.

Comprising: 1914/15 Star, “SJT 3-LOND R”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “SJT 3-LOND R”, Territorial Efficiency Medal, with clasp (GVR FM Bust), “SJT 3/LOND REGT”. Group mounted as originally worn. ... Accompanied by a postcard photograph of the 3rd London’s ... Service papers. ... News paper cutting, referring to the “Fighting Fusiliers” at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. Sergeant William Wallace Hawes enlisted into the 3rd Bn London Regiment on the 1st April 1908, he posted with his Regiment to Malta on the 5th September 1914 and was then sent to France on the 5th January 1915. At the end of the term of engagement he was discharged on the 31st March 1916 and returned to the UK where he volunteered for service with the 18th Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Corps. He later returned to the 3rd London’s with the rank of WO II. He was awarded the TFEM on the 1st April 1914 and the clasp in 1928.

WW1 British Red Cross Ambulance Drivers Medal Pair. Awarded to “W.H.H. OWEN B.R.C & ST. J.J.”. Comprising: British War Medal and Victory Medal. Medals loose. William Harry Hugh Owen volunteered for service with the British Red Cross at the age of 18 years on the 29th August 1916. He saw service at Le Harvre and was discharged on the 2nd December 1916. His address on enlistment was given as One Mile House, Bath Road, Taplow. This was a Public House close to Maidenhead in Berkshire

WW1 1918 Civilian “His Master’s Voice” Factory Hayes Munition Works OBE Medal. This medal of the Order of the British Empire was awarded to Roland Basset Paine, for his services in the HMV factory during WW1 when it was used as a munition factory. Comprising: OBE in original leather case and retaining original typed named paper envelope. .... June 1918 HMV booklet giving details of the award. .... Family WW2 Medal group comprising: 1939/45 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal, War Medal. Medals loose complete with forwarding box (poor condition) addressed to Mr E Paine of Hayes Middlesex. Mr Roland Basset Paine was awarded the Medal of the Order of the British Empire in 1918 the accompanying booklet states that he joined the HMV Company in 1912 as a wood working machinist. During WW1 the HMV Hayes factory was used for munition work and in 1916 was involved in an accident which severely damaged his hand. Despite his injury he returned to work as quickly as possible resuming his place in what the booklet describes as working on the most dangerous machine in the factory. It is believed that Mr E. Paine served with the Royal Navy during WW2

Private George Stuart landed in France with the 1st Bn Gordon Highlanders on the 13th August 1914, his Medel Index Card confirms he was taken POW.

Leadbetter 54th Div M.G.Bn. He has shown ability and devotion to duty on all occasions. He has been with his unit in all actions, since and including the first Battle of Gaza, and in every case he has done very good work as a section Sergeant. His powers of leadership and coolness in action have always been of the highest order. The 161st Machine Gun Company ( 161st Brigade, 54 th Division) was formed in Egypt during April 1916, on 19th April 1918, the Company became part of the 54th Machine Gun Battalion. #11;#11;
WW1 9th Bn Royal Fusiliers Military Medal. Awarded to “612 PTE. P. BRAGGINTON 9/R. FUS”. The announcement of the award of the Military Medal appeared in the London Gazette on the 14th September 1916. The 9th Bn was formed at Hounslow. Private Percy Bragginton landed in France on the 1st June 1915.

Awarded to Second Lieutenant George Henry Potts of the “Salford Pals” who won the Military Cross on the 4th November 1918 at the Oise-Sambre Canal action, where his Commanding Officer Lt. Col. John Nievill Marshall and Sergeant James Clarke of the 15th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers both won the Victoria Cross. Comprising: Military Cross, 1914/15 Star, “17607 L.CPL G.H. POTTS LAN FUS”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “2 Lieut.”. Medals polished GC. The announcement of the award of the Military Cross appeared in the London Gazette on the 2nd April 1919. “#11;“During the attack on the Oise-Sambre Canal on the 4th November 1918, he was one of the first to attempt to make the crossing under heavy fire, of the bridge constructed by the R.E’s. When the advance was continued on the enemy side of the canal. he led his Company with great skill and courage, capturing all his objectives”#11;Second Lieutenant George Henry Potts from Pendlebury Salford, volunteered into the 19th Bn Lancashire Fusiliers. He landed in France on the 23rd November 1915 and was commissioned on the 25th June 1918
95th (Derbyshire) Regiment Casualty Crimea War Pair of Medals. Awarded to 2950 Private Joseph Harris who died on the 30th September 1854. Comprising: Crimea Medal two clasps “Alma”, “Sebastopol”, “JOSEPH HARRIS 95TH REGT” (Impressed), Turckish Crimea Medal (British issue). Medals loose. Private Joseph Harris was mobilised with his Regiment for the Crimea and embarked on SS Medway on the 6th April 1854, landing Scutari on the 24th April. Serving with the Light Company, he was present at the Alma and the advance to Sebastapol. On the 26th September the Russians attacked the British Second Division positions and the Light Company of the 95th led the counter attack. Private Harris fell ill with cholera and died on the 30th September. Medal and clasp entitlement confirmed.
2nd Bn Derbyshire Regiment 1854 India General Service Medal, clasp “Sikkim 1888”. Awarded to “545 PTE E BOWSKILL 2ND BN DERBY R” Official correction to initial. Private Edward Bowskill enlisted in June 1883 and landed with the Regiment in India 1885. Medal entitlement is confirmed, he was discharged in 1895.
2nd Bn Derbyshire Regiment Victorian Meritorious Service Medal. A Victorian example awarded to “CLR SERJT G. HODGKINSON 2ND DERBY REGT”. Colour Sergeant George Hodgkinson was born in 1852 and was educated at the School of the Patriotic Fund, his father having died in service with the 95th. In 1866 at the age of 14 he enlisted a Drummer Boy, following the footsteps of his brother. He saw service in Gibraltar and in Egypt during 1882, earning the medal and Star. He was awarded the Long Service Medal in 1884 and was discharged after 21 years service in 1887. Nominated for the award of the Meritorious Service Medal, this was granted in 1902.
59th Foot (2nd Notts.) Drummer’s Afghanistan War Medal. Awarded to “596 DRUM J SULLIVAN 59 FOOT” Drummer John Sullivan was born in Aldershot camp and at the age of 13 enlisted into the 59th Foot whilst the Regiment was serving in India. He remained in India with the Regiment until 1880 and is confirmed as seeing service during the Afghanistan campaign. Returning to the UK he was discharged in 1886. He papers show he maybe entitled to the clasp “Ahmed Khel”
2nd Bn Derbyshire Regiment India General Service Medal 1895 Two Clasps. Awarded to “3214 PTE D HOUGHTON 2D BN DERBY REGT”. Bearing the two clasps “Punjab Frontier 1897-98”, “Tirah 1897-98”. Private Dean Houghton enlisted in 1891 and is confirmed on the medal roll with the additional note invalided to England. He was discharged on return to England as unfit for further service.
