Tootell A.B.R.N.; with four other medals comprising Republic of Korea War Service Medal, Eastern Service Medal, unofficial British and Commonwealth Occupation Forces Association Occupation of Japan medal and IFKVWA 40th Anniversary Medal; together with an archive of contemporary and later related items including Certificate of Service 1946-54, Recommendations for Advancement and Conduct Record Sheet 1946-53, Quartermasters History Sheet 1949-53, Destroyer Association China Station 1945-53 beret, later manuscript journal with his own account of the Yangtze incident etc, Joe's birth certificate details dated 1968, reprinted half-length portrait in uniform, Manual of Seamanship 1937, modern shield and framed crests, blazer badges and metal badges and a copy of Loyal & Steadfast - The Story of HMS Consort 2008, which gives details of how Joe Tootell received his wounds, the extract reads ' When Consort came under fire a short time later it was a strange, perhaps unreal experience for many of the crew who had never seen action before. Ordinary Seaman Joe Tootell was in the wheelhouse. 'I could not see the action. We could hear the ship taking severe punishment. When the wheelhouse took a direct hit, killing the coxwain, Chief Petty Officer Gurney, and myself receiving multiple shrapnel wounds, the steering mechanism was put out of action.'Condition Report:NGSM in very good condition.Other medal reasonable with grubby ribbons.Archive materials vary but are generally in reasonably good condition consistent with age and use.

KIA (Ypres) DSO group of eight Boer War/WW1 medals comprising Victorian DSO, Queens South Africa Medal with six clasps for Belmont, Modder River, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill and Belfast, Kings South Africa Medal with two clasps for South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902, Turkish Liakat Medal, WW1 1914 Star with 5th Aug - 22nd Nov 1914 bar, British War Medal and Victory Medal and George V 1911 Coronation Medal, awarded to Lieutenant (later Captain) Albert Alexander Leslie Stephen Scots Guards; the group of six Boer War miniatures including additional Turkish Order of the Medjedie 3rd Class with rosette; all with ribbons and later mounted and framed with his bronze memorial plaque; together with Cecil Cutler (active 1886-1934) heightened watercolour three-quarter length portrait of Stephen in uniform, signed and dated 1915, 52 x 35cm; gilt frame;Auctioneer's note: STEPHEN, ALBERT ALEXANDER LESLIE, Lieutenant, was born 3rd February 1879, son of Major J Z Stephen and Augusta Henrietta Mary (nee Ricketts). He was educated at Eton, and joined the Scots Guards 4th January 1899, becoming Lieutenant 4th April 1900. He served in the South African War, in which he was present at a large number of engagements. He took part in the advance on Kimberley, with the action at Behnont, and was present at Enslin, Modder River and Magersfontein, and also at the operations in the Orange Free State, Transvaal, Orange River Colony and Cape Colony, including actions at Poplar Grove, Driefontein, Vet and Zand Rivers; the action near Johannesburg, those at Pretoria, Diamond Hill and Belfast. From January 1901, he was Assistant Provost-Marshal to Pulteney's Column, and he was Intelligence Officer to Garrett's Column in 1902. He was twice mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 10 September 1901, and 29 July 1902]; received the Queen's Medal with six clasps; the King's Medal with two clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 31st October 1902]: "Albert Alexander Leslie Stephen, Lieutenant, Scots Guards. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". He was promoted Captain 10th April 1904, and from April 1906 to March 1909, was employed with the Macedonian Gendarmerie under the Foreign Office; from March 1909 to January 1911, with the Turkish Gendarmerie. He was awarded the Order of the Medjidie, 3rd Class, and in 1911 the Coronation Medal. From September 1910 to September 1913, he was an Adjutant of the Territorial Force, and in April 1914, was appointed Adjutant of the 1st Battalion of his own regiment. Captain Stephen served in the European War, and was killed in action on the 31st of October 1914, just 12 years to the day after his DSO was gazetted. Younger brother of Douglas Clinton Leslie Stephen (see following lot).Condition Report: Medals are in reasonably good condition consistent with age and storage and being mounted in a frame.The watercolour is suffering from some damp mould damage.The clasps to the QSA are thought to be Tailors copies and the ring to the DSO has probably been altered. Also doubts have been expressed as to the authenticity of the DSO and prospective buyers should satisfy themselves as to the originality of this medal prior to bidding.It is also thought that the QSA and KSA are renamed medals.

WW2 Highland Light Infantry Military Medal group of five comprising MM, 1939-1945 War Medal, Defence Medal, 1939-1945 Star and France and Germany Star; three with ribbons; awarded to 1702538 A. Sjt. A.L. Alden H.L.I.; various copies of his citation giving details of his bravery on 26 Sep 44 at Donderdonk France when he single-handedly silenced an enemy machine gun nest. The citation also mentions a further heroic act on 15 Nov 44 when he risked his life to obtain vital information on the position of enemy mines and booby traps saving the lives of many other soldiers; the collection also comes with two contemporary group photographs of his Highland Light Infantry regiment, copy photograph of him being awarded the MM by Field-Marshall Montgomery, two post-war tug-o-war medallions and other items; together with a shooting medallion awarded to Gnr. J. Alden (his brother John) inscribed 123 L.A.A. Regt. R.A. Rifle Meeting Harburg 1945 and a Life Saving bronze medallion to J.
